I couldn't do it in WinXP, but in Windfows 98SE, just make a .BMP in Paint and rename it to .ico. I can't remember though if the colour #000000 was transparent or the the colour matchign the pixel at 0,0 though...

IrfanView does the job, too. It can save as transparent .ico or normal .ico file.

Thank you very much, that'll work just fine.

I heard you can rename .bmp files to .ico, but I've never tried it and thus can't vouch for its effectiveness.

You might try CoffeeCup Free Icon Studio. It's a decent program, though no longer available from the official website, for some reason...

Does anyone know how to take a .jpg and covert it to a .ico

I'm trying to change my desktop icons for recycle and my computer etc.

I have photoshop 6 and it doesn't have that as an extension. I've tried removing the .jpg extension and replacing it with .ico but that didn't work..
