You'd be surprised how often two different models of a device, one much more expensive with more features, differ only in firmware that can be rewritten.

It was probably capable of burning at 8x but the firmware was dummied down. The other scenario was it was capable of burning 8x but the firmware code was still buggy so, they left it at 4x until 8x could work reliably.

So i was trying to burn a movie on to some new DVD-Rs I got but Nero was all like "Illegal Disc" so I was donig some research on the internet and found out i had to flash my CD burner's firmware. I did this and all was well. After this i got it to burn but it was burning at 8x. My CD burner is originally a 4x! After the update it became an 8x burner for free. For those interested, it's a Lite-On SOHW-1633S. I know this is pretty random but just thought it belonged here and maybe people with this burner or others that this happens on can learn from this. Or you can discuss how you've gotten something like this happen or something.
