They probably had it fully working at some point, then realized that gigantic flames like the ones a Dino-Rhino would be expected to shoot are rather unfair and overly dominating from a gameplay perspective. Then, as the game progressed, they stopped updating the code for them and it stopped being fully compatable with the rest of the game.

But with the groovy new sprite inserting program, it shouldn't be too hard to code a fire-breathing version and gigantic firejet. It could work as a boss, or as a regular enemy if used more sparingly than the standard Dino-Rhino is.

The problem with that it wouldn't be too difficult for Nintendo to simply correct that with sprite memory settings. It was more than likely something else that made them remove it, but I may be wrong.

Then maybe Nintendo made Dino Rhino with fire after all, and took out the ASM for his breathing fire for sprite overloading reasons.

Edit: Duh. Look at the graphics, of course they made him breathe fire at a point.

Thing is, using it causes significant slowdown and causes sprites to vanish, as if the memory settings are incorrect. Although it works, you'll have that issue on your hand, so it's not a good idea to use it until that can be sorted out.

I'm surprised Nintendo never took those graphics out, I hadn't noticed it for a while.

But yes, mikeyk made a Dino Rhino that shoots fire, I guess just because it was an idea that came from the graphics.

I think I recall mikeyk made a version of the Dino Rhino enemy in Sprite Tool that can breathe fire. You should check it out.

This has been known for months.

I think it's possible to make him do it, but it'd require extensive assembly hacking.

It uses the same graphics as Reznor, those are Reznor's fireball frames =/

I could be wrong, but judging by the circled tiles below, it looks like dino-rhino was supposed to shoot fireballs from its mount similar to the dino torch or reznor
