Originally posted by HyperMackerel Casemods suck. Just my opinion. Anyway, I don't really care about graphics... unless they actually hurt your eyes. Seriously, though. I think it's just as fun to play Pac-Man as it is to play Mario Sunshine, for example. Actually, in that case, Pac-Man would be funnier. Why? I don't really know. Perhaps because things were simple back then, and the developers had to create good gameplay. |

Originally posted by ZTaimat I don't think you got the analogy. They're both the same price, because downloading a hack with crappy graphics costs the same as one with good graphics (nothing). You can't just take a hose to a hack with bad graphics and improve them. |

I don't classify different attributes of a hack as giving different levels of fun, rather the different attributes blending together to give the game a level of fun.
1: First off, good graphics (and appropriate palettes) attract gamers. 2: ASM hacks give the "oohs" and "ahhs" that make people want to keep playing. 3: Good level design is basically levels that pertain to that landscape region in the overworld, you don't have a mountain in the middle of a plain (unless there's one on the overworld), and bland levels repel people. I (and many others, so it seems) personally favor good level design over the other attributes, however hacks with ASM enhancements really tend stand out (hence, SMO). Plenty of good hacks have nice graphics, so I haven't formulated an opinion on that topic yet. However, I don't care for bloody or gorey graphics like Ghettoyouth's hack, I prefer more landscape-like things. (I'll stop right here since I'm going off-subject) |

Originally posted by HyperMackerel Actually, I think that was... car 1 at a lower price, yet covered with dirt car 2 at a higher price, EXATLY THE SAME as car 1, yet clean. most people would buy car 2 becuse thay're too dumb to turn on a hose. Anywho, I usually play games with good pre/reviews... for example, shadow the hedgehog (the game) has a crap rating, so I'm afraid to get it becuase it may be a lump of crap |

Would you rather have a car that gets 50MPG, handles great, runs well, accelerates fast, and has a good top speed, or a car that gets 50MPG, handles great, runs well, accelerates fast, has a good top speed, and looks great for the same price? Fancy graphics don't make or break a game but they do matter. That's why people casemod things. |

Originally posted by Smallhacker the thing is that the SMW original gfx aren't unbearably awful, in fact they are more beautiful than many games, despite the BG's being a bit bland. But see the castle set, it's indeed much better than any one from SMAS. And i'd not play a hack with horrible gfx even if its level design is excellent, and this sounds contraditory, because level design would depend on the way you'd use those horrid gfx, and i don't think horrid gfx would add any good possibility to level design, but the smw pretty ones sure would. |

This really relates to casual gamers in a way. Casual gamers now want all these bloody, gorey, graphically awesome games. They don't care if it's fun. They call it fun if it fits their criteria, which has nothing about true fun. As for players that play hacks, they flock to a game that has great graphics. It's not as common, no, but it still exists. Some so-called "hackers" just focus on getting the ExGFX first, and then slightly edit a level. It sickens me. There needs to be more hacks like SMO or TLC. Those stood out, and were truly unique. I like hacks that have ExGFX, yes, but if someone can manage to stick with original GFX within a great hack, I'll be amazed. |

2000 imaginary bucks to whoever makes a full 8-world hack with intentionally unbearably awful graphics (but excellent level design) without using any ASM or HEX modification (except for those made by Lunar Magic).... just to prove that fancy graphics and ASM hax0rzing isn't needed to make a good hack. |

Ok guys, i'm not making this a poll (before a comment like "you should have made this a poll, stupid" is made) coz i want words, not only votes.
Nowadays there's a lot of people thinking only on ExGFX, and forgetting level design or making levels fun. I think there's a order in priority of a hack: first: fun second: level design third: usage of ExGFX Hacks like FPI's first one showed that level design + fun in high doses can make ExGFX forgettable, his game used only the SMW gfx and a hell of possibilities are offered to us by the original SMW gfx, the difference is in who is able to use those possibilities and who just prefer to rip ExGFX only and use older ideas of level design already made by Nintendo in the past. My hack has ExGFX, a lot in fact, but i didn't forget the smw graphics. I try to make the level design original and use the various possibilities i can with those graphics. So, my question is: would people just be interested on me releasing a demo of my hack to see the ExGFX or would they care for level design and fun too? Because if people only care for ExGFX, then i think SMW hacking has reached a deep end when hackers like FPI and Sendy stopped releasing demos, and the SMAS ripping craziness started. I want fun hacks, not copy of older level designs and forgetting how many amazing things we can do with the SMW ones. |
