Hmm... I've never had problems fidning drivers for hardware.. Okay, except for my Sis onboard video.. but that's just a POS card anyways.
I can't even run proper 3D. And it's a 3D card... some sort of driver issue, and there are no available drivers for this mobo. |

Ok, has anyone ever tried going to http://www.driverguide.com? |

Hmm... I work on a Help Desk, and I'd be suspicious if a client called me asking me for a driver. However -- this isn't a public Help Desk, it's a work one -- everybody who calls me works in the same government department I do. And generally, they shouldn't be installing drivers (or anything) on their computers without going through the appropriate channels anyway. We're all bound by certain IT policies here...
So yes... I'd likely come across as an "incompetent tech", because I will ask a lot of "dumb" questions trying to work out exactly what the client is trying to do. Usually either they're installing a device like a new scanner (in which case I can tell them they already have the drivers on CD, and if they don't... why not??) or they're doing something they shouldn't be. |

Being a current employee of the tech support industry I can only say that I've seen this happen so many times, it's not funny anymore. Eh, I've still got a lot of obscure stories that will pass the time nicely with my friends. Just as a frame of reference, only 10-20% of all techs you call at the first level are competent. I've arrived at that number through an unscientific process of 3 straight years of observation of other people doing the exact same job as me. |

From the looking I did, I think you're better off looking for something a little more broad, like drivers for the entire motherboard (I was getting some weird results from google, I was starting to come to the conclusion that you needed the ac '97 sound drivers instead O_o. )
Oh, and for possible future use, you can usually more accurately relay that you're talking about a specific word by changing: i think when i first said the word, driver, to i think when i first said the word "driver" |

The driver I need is for a SM Bus Controller - IXP SB400 SMBus by ATI...
I've actually stopped the search for now. I got sick of looking. |

Um, what driver do you need? |

What's with all the dreamweaver hate? =/. It's great for html editing (and I've used other "highly rated" html editors), but I'd throw myself in a fire before I'd let it code anything for me. |

Dreamweaver... ew... I use Quanta for all my HTML editing, but I don't think there's a Windows version. And for fixing problems, I find that Dillo's HTML bug thing works REALLY well in finding errors and flaws. |

so... he tells me that the driver is unavailable... which is bullshit, because I bought this computer less then a year ago, and the driver was there then, I don't know how a driver would up and disappear like that... I guess they do.
well the discussion ended at exactly the 55 minute mark, and I didn't get anywhere where I hadn't been before. As far as the windows thing... I'm not to upset about it, except for when they asked me how I usually go about fixing html problems, I said open in notepad and find problem, in which they told me I would have to use Dreamweaver... ick... it'll take some getting used to, but I think I'll be getting payed to sit on my ass all day so nothing bad about that. I think I've had enough Windows for one day, I'll switch back to the other partition right about now. |

Reminds me of Sympatico tech support stories. Basically you go to Level 1 first where they walk you through all the stuff you've probably tried already or stuff you know isn't related to the problem. It's only after they treat you like a baby that they elevate your problem to Level 2. |

Note to self:
Do not get a tech-support job... unless I get an anvil in my head and loses 2^n IQ points, where n is the highest number where both n and n+2 are prime numbers. |

Oops. Sorry I misread that. I saw "word driver" in the sentence "seriously, i think when i first said the word driver" and thought you meant M$ word driver, which kind of made my eyebrow rise on it's own. Nevermind. It's just my lack of sleep making me look stupid.
Why not do this: Set up a boss key switch. Have Linux and use it. Then when your boss comes over, hit a series of keys to put QEMU in fullscreen. Your boss will see you using his precious Windows and then when he walks away, you can minimize it again and continue using something good. |

Originally posted by Nebetsu I don't remember referring to any "word driver", I said driver, and i'm pretty sure that it is the correct word, and the only reason I'm reinstalling windows is because my new job requires a windows environment (which is retarded, they said the only reason they use it is because microsoft gives them all the development tools for free, and that since they get it for free they'd rather use that then linux because anything made by microsoft is definately more secure then anything unix based... lol) And don't tell me what is correct computer "jargon" Edit: and it's now been 40 mins til I initially stated my problem |

Umm.... I don't believe that "word driver" is accurate computer jargon. |

I did a fresh install of windows today... and happened to be short a couple drivers, I went around and found all but one... so I thought hey, why not try this stupid talk to a tech. So I do it, and see if he can point me to a driver... I tell him my problem, and that I just need to be pointed to a location of the driver if he could... but no, he has to go on and ask a series of a hundred questions, in which he gets exactly to what I told him at the very beginning of chat, and now I've been holding for about 10 minutes while he "finds" (ie. gets his supervisor, who probably gets there supervisor, to hope they can point me to the flippin' driver).
I just want the fuckin' driver already... seriously, i think when i first said the word, driver, he shit his pants because i'm sure that half the people that go to the tech support don't know the difference between a usb drive and a floppy drive... urghhh... I also decided to put this in Craziness because this dipshit is driving me crazy. |
