E3s atmosphere in the past has been about as good as some sort of creepy political rally. Seriously, it is controlled and full of secrets. People paranoid about missing something and trying to spy in on conversations to get a scoop. E3 has sucked because it strangles the industry's ability to make ground breaking announcements. Your stocks are gauged at the time of E3. If you make an announcement two months later that should've been made at E3 your stock numbers are going to reflect that =P |

I don't know about bigger than E3 because we have to see what E3 is in May. But as far as the atmosphere goes, it should beat it handily. |

Emptyeye: It's also the fault of companies for rushing stuff so that it's ready for E3. If the game's playable and doesn't have any major faults, show it. If not, show a video or several videos.
PAX could really benefit from all this. |

Hardly devestating news unless you're one of the cab drivers who took home an extra $500-700 in pay for E3. If this translates into games with better gameplay, I'm all for it. I'm not holding my breath though. |

As others mentioned, while the idea of a big video gaming media festival was cool and all, was it really necessary? The main purpose was to hype up games, which thanks to the Internet and various video game news sources, you can do year-round. Could do it for years actually...witness Metal Gear Disappointment 2: Sons of Daikatana, which had been hyped up on a pretty continual basis since essentially the first Metal Gear Solid's release (And let's face it, with the hype it got, anything less than perfection in all respects was simply unacceptable).
So essentially, I completely understand. E3 was fast becoming a waste of resources that could have been used, you know, developing games. |

....and E3 '07 was the year I was told I would go (I knew someone who was considered "media" by some means who -claimed- they would take me I didn't exactly have my hopes up in the first place but still ) Well, its understandable why they might do this but...I don't know, something tells me theres going to be a negative effect from it, but that's just me *shrug* |

He's not around anymore but what are the odds he did go this year? Rich little...
I'm guessing there might be a FEW loopholes for people to get in but certainly not enough to boost that 5,000 figure too much. |

So now where do you draw the line with the media? Do you allow a large web presence for blogging/podcasts? Go for mainstream media as opposed to people who know the subject matter?
I know E3 grew into something nobody expected, but it really wasn't all that bad... |

And it's named "E3 Expo" Which is really, really stupid.
Electronic Entertainment Expo Expo, what a great name. My friend got to go last year, too. The last year that it was going to be the awesome-fest that it was. I'm going to miss it. It's supposed to appeal to the people, bring gamers together, and be for the people. Now, it's just back to letting the media touch games that we won't get our hands on for months/years. |

My take on news stories is that if several sources are running with the story, then it's either true or close to the truth. If it's only one source, then... wait and see if it's a trusted source, take with a grain of salt if not. |

I just find it funny that multiple people in this thread were like "DUR HUR HUR ST00PID JOYSTIQ LOOK E3 NOT CANCELED....." and then the story essentially checks out.
DUR HUR HUR ST00PID PEOPLE IN THREAD. That is all. |

Wow, how the f5ck did I miss this thread...?
I coulda sworn I checked the entire front page...Didn't figure it'd be past that, what-not with the accounement happening yesterday-ish and confirmation today... Oh, well. I really liked the Loop that Attack of the Show did today on that topic. "Maybe next year, I won't be stuck playing games like CHROMEHOUNDS for the summer!" ~ Adam Sessler |

According to GameSpot, it seems the main companies pushing for this were Sony, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and THQ. I'm guessing the former two wanted to have their own big events probably closer to their home bases; Nintendo strikes me as a company who probably didn't care which way E3 went and maybe they'll bring back Spaceworld now. Dunno. |
