Get a magnetic tape wiper and use it on the drive... then keep the drive or sell it on ebay as a formatted drive.

...why would I? I mean, come on, think about what/where we're talking about here. ANYWAY, she picked up the comp last week, and I suggested taking a hammer to it.

Retreiving pieces of a broken hard drive scattered through foreign lands where most of the pieces are now things like parts of fighting tournament trophies would make for an awesome RPG.

Plugged it into my old Gateway computer, which melted the inside parts.

I think that's the most impressive part of that list, to be honest. Then again, nothing about Gateway's surprised me.

Does anyone still make internal HD's in the 5.25" style?). I can't break into the drive itself, because three of the screws are stripping, and I had a go at it in the parking lot (and consequently, bent a shitload of pins on the connector), but I just have to kill it dead. If I nuke this, will it damage the Officially Licensed Office Microwave?

Quantum? Haha, I have a Quantum Bigfoot 8GB 5.25" HDD in my other computer, go figure.

I'll almost undoubtably fry the microwave. So take the better option: Buy a cheap one at your local walgreens or other boring store -- usually they run for I think $30 for the cheap ones.

Just be sure to record it!

Heres what I did to my aunt's ancient, (and by God, I mean 1990) hard drive.

1. Formatted it, 4 times.
2. Hooked it up and half install windows 98.
3. Plugged it into my old Gateway computer, which melted the inside parts.
4. Took it outside and smashed it with a hammer until it was in small pieces.
5. Buried it in various places.

Good times.

Fill it with gunpodwer or whatever you can get your hands on and blow it up.

Maybe there are firworks you can take it from. Or just make a home-made bomb with a recipe from the net. But be careful.

I always figured what I'd do if I needed a disk's contents to absolutely not be recovered is something along these lines:

1) Overwrite it with crap several times.
2) Smash it into small pieces inside a plastic bag.
3) Burn the bag.
4) If there's any solid chunks left, mash them into powder.
5) Scatter the powder/ashes in the woods, river etc.
6) Realize there was one or two files on it I still wanted and forgot to back up.

If you really want to prevent a resourceful and determined adversary from recovering the data from the disk, more extreme measures need to be taken. Even a large number of overwrites with the disk heads followed by crushing can still leave old data readable by very sensitive equipment. There are few sure fire ways to destroy a disk: sandblasting or grinding the surface off of the platters or melting the disk (pictures!).

microwave!??! metal + microwave = arcing, not to mention I'm not sure how the other materials within the HDD will handle that...

but keeping on the method of heat, use a torch =D

I'm assuming it's being destroyed for security reasons. Use DBAN first and run about 8 passes over the disk, with anything but Quick Erase (only zero; good for clearing a disk for software, doesn't do squat for data recovery).

You should have made a copy first!

Seriously, yeah, get a hammer.
