It's nothing more than a "# of pending news" counter.

We used to have one "no-delete" post, but, uh, I deleted it

I never updated the counter, so it's at -1.

What is the number in brackets next to the site link in the menu" I've noticed it chagnes between 0, -1, and (once) 1.
