Read: Flavor of the month syndrome. There is a more technical term, but this is an actual, and common, psychological phenomenon. Look at most MMO's for good examples.

This can actually be said of almost ever console except most of Nintendo's. Nintendo has made it an uncommon practice to make thier systems built like goddam rocks. How many times have you heard of people having destroyed/burned SNES's or Gameboys, and they STILL work, the game is simply fused into place now. Hell, I've had it happen to my SNES. (Which thankfully Earthbound was fused to it, which I'd play excessively.)

Sega did it too, as does Microsoft now. Only time Sega didn't cheap out on a system was the Dreamcast, which is the only system I will ever fanboy myself out. (To this day I mourn the lose of the Dreamcast, my PS2 wishes it were as cool.)

From a real standpoint, fanboys are just, well, fanboys I guess. I know you shouldn't define the word you're using with itself, but in this case it works so well. The rest of us with brains to decide what we want will do just that. I'll be buying all three 'Next-gen' systems, just some are higher priority than others.

Well, to be fair Sony were the ones tossing around the idea that a PS3 game could only be played on one system, getting rid of the rental/used game markets.

Does it really matter? Do you really want to support a company that has shady practices? Sure, they have different branches that do different things and no one here is ignorant enough to think otherwise. But the fact remains, do you want to support a company through any means that pulls crap like that on people?

And besides, Sony hasn't been known for the greatest in quality hardware. Just look at the first few versions of the PS and the PS2 for an example of this.. I mean, it isn't like this is an isolated case and someone is poking at a molehill and trying to make it into a mountain, rather actually it is a mountain to begin with. Sony's practices and their poor choice of attitude to customers have given me a distaste for them entirely as of late..

That, I believe, has already been addressed by Shadic.

Indeed. The best one I heard during E3 or something around there was "The Next Generation of gaming starts when we say it starts!"

I honestly doubt it actually has happened. Just saying someone might do that. But like I said, keeping your customers happy is important to making money, so you might consider any time a company changes their mind about something because of customer demand (EG Microsoft continuing to support Windows 98 until now when they wanted to drop it 4 years ago) as a sort of example.

That statement is legit iff you were not satisfied by the products produced by the company when you used their services. Otherwise, it is bigotry to diss a company whose services you've never used. But I recall you had a playstation, did you not? so it is okay coming from you.

Yeah, I have a PSX and PS2 and a bunch of games for both. The incredibly poor durability of the PS2 was a signifigant part of my decision, but it was that whole rootkit deal that convinced me to just stop buying from them at all. It made it very clear that these people don't care about their customers at all; not just that they put it there, but that the only way to have it removed was another invasive program that opened up gaping security holes, and the only way to get it was to give them your email which (they even stated on the site) would then be spammed.

What I am amazed at is the number of people who whine about Microsoft being in it for the money, who somehow believe that Nintendo and Sony aren't.
The huge monopoly with programs on X86 computers might be a factor. There's a reason why Microsoft got in trouble with EU. (There's less lobbying here as far I know)

I also don't like Sony, but not for their console. I have my other reasons to not like a such company, the rootkit piracy protection anyone?

Then, both Microsoft and Sony aren't in a good position. Microsoft stocks are about the same since year 2000 or so apparently and Sony is making big losses in average.

And Nintendo isn't pure good either, they abused their monopoly position in the start of the 90's, and started to get a bit arrogant. Sony seems to repeat that mistake with this generation.

Why are some people so mentally retarded about certain consoles? I don't understand their connection to a company that would piss on their grandmother's grave if it meant they could make some money...Why are fanboys so rabid?
Because you're only allowed to like something if everyone else does. Didn't you get the memo?

In all seriousness, there's a basic human instinct to win that often manifests itself in silly and pointless ways, and this is one of them. If you like the most popular console, you're on the winning team. Conversely, if your favorite console isn't doing as well in sales, you lose. I can't find a source for this, but I read a while ago that it has been demonstrated that people will buy the #1 brand of some product just because it is #1. If this is the case, it would not surprise me at all.

The XBOX wasn't made to get get, they lose cash with every sale of a unit...

and I don't buy SONY because I dn't trust their product quailty. my friend has a PS2... it failed (couldn't read disks). I don't buy XBOX because I don't see a good reason to. I also dislike SONY because of the rootkit fiasco.

I like Nintendo because I can trust that their products will work, they have the games I like, and the price is pretty low, to boot. I also like nintendo, because instead of making a bigger controller, they went for something new. Now, look at the Wii's controller and it's possibilities. That's just another reaosnm I prefer Nintendo - innovation above and beyond SONY and Micorsoft.

Actually, people stopped buying them first. They don't want 25 different versions of Pong in different colors for $20 each, they wanted something new.

Some people, (Me, and a friend of mine) dislike Sony because of the Rootkit thing that they tried to pull off. While it's an entirely different section of the company (Well, for now, give it 10 years..) they sheer fact that this had to have been approved by some higher-ups just pisses me off. The same can be said for Microsoft with Windows and such, but Nintendo doesn't really have anything to bias them off of, other than the fact that they are a pure gaming company.

And anybody who saids that the XBox was made to get Microsoft money is stupid, they lost a lot of cash on those things. It was a stepping stone, they needed to get into the industry.

That's not entirely true. Money is most important, but a good corporation might make some small sacrifices to make people happy. Hell, if you're not making people happy, you're not going to make much money. People don't like to buy from companies they don't like, that's why I don't buy Sony products anymore.

If they don't, then they go bankrupt. simple as that.

As long as video game makers see they can still make money on the console they program on, they will continue to program on it. It takes a bad decision on a console to make video game companies jump ship (i.e. Nintendo's fall in the mid-90's). Of course, the consumer also has a role in how well a console will do, this is why Dreamcast and Saturn were flops in the U.S. and not in Japan.

If console were really important factor, then one would just buy the console and no games . But I believe most logical people buy a video game console because they like the games the could play on it.

Well obviously all companies are going to be in it for the money, because if they weren't they could possibly be out of a job. You can throw out the EA, Microsoft, whatever jokes all you want (even I do at times), but truth be told its not like every company, producer, and developer out there are 'not' in it for the money, they all are in some way.

Although its been awhile since I've seen this here, I just can't stand it when people say something like "I'm not buying it because its Microsoft. They suck". Thats just stupid and annoying.
