That's if you used the debug-mode enabling Game Genie code.

I'd always been told you'd have one of every item and the rest filled with P-Wings.

Yes. You CAN start over with all P-Wings, but you cannot start over with your item reserves filled up with another item. That's kind of the point I was trying to make, there.

Really? I'll have to try that some time. I P-Wings. A mapper's best friend.

When I first got to World 6 in the All-Stars version I stocked up on tons of Hammer Suits.

Well, with SMB3, if you played all the way through the game, then started over without reseting, you would have your reserve box full of p-wings. Everytime you beat the game, you would start over with a different item filling your reserve. Eventually you would get the hammer bros. suit, tanooki suit, frog suit, etc.

Actually, the part about the hammer suits and stuff is nothing but a rumor, but it is possible to restart with all your items in the NES version if you eject and push the cartridge back in in JUST the right way.

As you're going off a screen, and you see the screen shifting, hit SELECT to bring up your map. After you close it again, you should be on the far side of the next screen.

You forgot the part about doing it as the screen is shifting produces a completely different result than when you do it before it shifts. But yeah, it can be used to reach glitched areas, reach areas before you're supposed to, and cause all sorts of other glitches, such as fighting five final nightmares at one time.

If I recall correctly, I once finished SMB3 with a score of 1,200,000.

I should try it again sometime. I believe you can get much more points with that by exploiting the warp whistle(s) to warp back one level.

Using in this in some caves can lead to really glitched up areas, or OTHER caves that weren't supposed to be reached that way. It's pretty cool.

I remember being amused at being able to use some late suits (such as hammer bros suit) in the early game when I was younger with SMAS. You was unable to do that with the orginal game, so it gave the game a new angle for me.

I do have played through the game severeal times without warps, but I usually save every other world or something. Gone are the times when I would play one game and finish it in one day (I did that with SMW once).

It's perfectly fine to exploit SOME bugs... Like glitching through some walls to get to warps faster in SMB.

I'm guessing that legit speed runs have to be legit all the way through, so you can't exploit bugs but you could break sequences in games like Metroid.

Emu runs encourage exploitation.

It depends on the glitch. The ones in the Metroid games and other sequence breaks are generally considered okay, but ones such as the screen warp glitch in Link's Awakening is not.

Im actually going to ask a question about speed running...

Is exploiting a glitch to get a faster time considered legit?

Probably nowhere near as good as the professional speedrunners.

Hey, even they fuck up horribly (or get horribly fucked up) from time to time. Just look at the ones from the 100% All-Stars SMB3 one, or maybe even the ones from the DKC3 one. And besides, anyone can be a "professional" speed runner if they put enough work into it.
