The only thing that will be a pain is when they tighten them and they're more annoying than they are anything else.

Really, I can't fathom why they started me when I was 8. That ended me at 18. Braces for 10 years SUCKS.

Well, I got my braces yesterday. Now I see what people say - it really isn't that bad. Like you said though Xeo, it just feels weird getting them on. My teeth are aching, and it's really hard to bite into anything...and hell, as soon as I got braces, my parents cooked me a huge burger (pita to eat )

A lot of my friends like the colours I chose (orange and black, aren't I so creative?) I didn't have anything fancy either - just normal braces. None of that headgear crap that you have to wear to bed, or any special elastics - just normal braces. So I'm pretty happy.

Aside from the fact I still can't enjoy Halloween, they really aren't too bad. I'm happy I read all this - I knew exactly what to expect. Thanks guys

(oh, in case anyone cares, it took me 2.5 hours to get them on - halfway through, the orthadontist ditched me for another patient and made me read National Geographic for half an hour. Fun )

Braces weren't anything to me. Except for the two instances when you first get them on, it feels really really weird. And then when you get them taken off, it feels really really weird.

However, if you're just getting braces ... seriously, don't worry about it. I had to have the Palette Expander. Its basically this mechanism that eventually moves your jaw alignment or something, and its this piece that sits at the top of your mouth. However, there's a gap between the top of your mouth and the expander. So, for about a month it was nearly impossible to eat unless I wanted to choke, because I wasn't used to it, and it just plain got in the way (sometimes big chunks of food got stuck up there, and that was gross). I had to eat noodles for an entire month basically. And my mom had to help me tighten the thing every night, and eventually it got kind of painful.

But yeah, that aside braces are easy to handle. The only thing that bothered me sometimes was when I needed rubber bands put in to tighten my bite down or something like that, but not everyone needs those, and its still not a huge deal.

Well SNN, you can be satisfied that you'll be the slim kid at school while everyone else gains weight eating their candy :o

I'm so so so glad I never needed braces -- which is pretty amazing, considering all my other siblings have/had super crooked teeth and needed braces. Mine somehow came in straight.

My friends that had braces said that your mouth/lips hurt for a month or so right after getting the braces on, and that you get little cuts from the wires a lot until you get used to it.

But nearly everyone gets braces at some point -- if they all can deal with it, I'm positive you can too, SNN.

I had braces for two years and they weren't that bad. Sure, getting them tightened hurt for about a day, and the rubber bands were painful whenever I had them on, but nothing unbearable. Now that it is over, I'm glad I had them because of my nice straight teeth Getting them put on doesn't really hurt at all, they just make you open your mouth really wide for a really long time while they stick lots of strange-smelling things near your mouth. The wires will irritate your lips, etc for a month or two, but not much longer than that.

Fun fact: I have a "permanent retainer" that is cemented on the backside of my 6 lower teeth so you can't see it. I never notice it and I'll probably have it for the rest of my life.

My friend recently got braces actually - he also told me that the wires would cut the inside of his mouth, and it was a pain in the ass. He also noted that the pressure was sort of annoying too At least I know what to expect anyway. Honestly though, I'm more worried about what KATW said then the pain - no candy

Anyway, my teeth feel much better today. They never actually hurt .. they just felt so awkward and annoying - plus, now I have a gap on each side of my mouth, so that sort of sucks.

Well, I'm off to eat an apple

I've had this exact type of thing done, and with the anesthesia that the oral surgeons have and whatnot... the actual braces will cause a lot more pain. I.e. The teeth being moved by force causes a bit of pressure-type pain for a long time, and the wires will sometimes cut the insides of your mouth up a bit--that was the part I hated most. However, the actual putting on of the braces doesn't cause pain that I remember--only bad part is the cement that they use tastes like crap (and you will probably taste it a few times, unfortunately).

Yeah

...

Comparing getting Wisdom teeth out (yes, that is a teeth extraction) and getting braces... Same amount of pain, just spread over a long period of time...

However, the timing for your braces couldnt be worse. No awesome sticky candy for you this year

Well, I got my four teeth extracted today. Surprisingly, it didn't hurt at all, but it was annoying as hell. Had to stuff a bunch of gauzes in my mouth to stop the bleeding - plus, one of my teeth had curved roots, so that didn't help

I hear that getting the braces themselves (which I get on 3 days before Halloween ) is actually a lot less painful then teeth extractions. So hopefully I'm in the clear

I never thought that tightening hurt that much. Sure, it could be a little sore for a while, but some people make it sound unbearable -- it was never so bad I had to stop eating

I'd go home and eat a steak.

The soreness after a tightening isn't THAT HORRIBLE. Yeah, I sucked on my teeth a lot to ease the pain, but I didn't drink milkshakes in liu of eating what I normally ate.

When I got my molars cut out though, my dentist was a really old guy and well... was past his time as a doctor. I never had enough novacaine on visits to him. Drills hurt. He had to cut my lower molars in half with the drill before he could extract them. I have a high pain threshold, but dammnit...

Right now, I have braces. and sometimes i don't even notice they're there.

Most people hear something like "Your teeth are wrong, you need braces" or in some concept.
Then they're like WTF OMFG BRACES AHHH INEXPLICIT PAIN!!
Wellguess what? It's not the end of the world.

Never had braces. My teeth, while shiny and white, are all crooked and shark-like.

It's cool to have freaky teeth. Still, I religiously brush them and avoid cavities with my 70 dollar toothbrush.

So I have braces at the moment too. They come off tomorrow, to be replaced with an appliance that will shove my jaw forward so that my teeth meet in the front. It will be pain.

In my experience with braces, etc, it's better not to avoid solid food in favor of milkshakes or whatever. You have to learn how to move your mouth for eating, and so you should practice. I suggest bread and lettuce as two possible foods for a few hours after you get them in. Try to avoid very small, soft foods like rice, because it will take you five minutes to chew one mouthful. If you try to eat early you will, of course, be embarrassed, but it will take no more than a day or so for your muscles to adapt and be able to chew food. If you wait, you'll be on liquids only for as much as a week or so.

That's how it was for me, anyway. I hope it goes well for you, and doesn't hurt too much.

Edit:

I got my new appliance in. It doesn't much much, but then I'm still doped up on painkillers so who knows how it will feel in a few hours.

I ate a bagel. I'm proud of it.

I had 8 teeth pulled, the wisdom, two teeth at the top and two at the bottom, I believe 2nd bicuspids.

The wisdom teeth, as I said earlier, hurt like absolute hell, but not the other ones. I didn't even notice.

And I had all of those things, minus the headgear. Rubber bands, chains, etc.

Chains are fucking ridiculous, they hurt for a week or so. XD

Oy. Everyone I know says I need braces...except for my dentist . And the wierd thing is she seems to hate me and likes to see me in pain....

Anyway, pulling teeth Hurts. Like. Hell. She spent half an hour numbing me and another using something that looked like a wrench to yank as hard as she can to get them out (I got 4 pulled). Any way, the last one, the one that has the deepest roots, the freaking dentist decides it'd be a good time to use the bathroom for, acording to the clock, a good TEN MINUTES. When she got back I told her the novican wore off, and she said that she didn't want to waste anymore on me. So, with the tooth fully in, and me feeling every last bit of pain, she yanked and yanked until it was out, then, opens the door and says, "Now that wasn't so bad now, was it?"

WHAT. THE. HELL. DID. SHE. THINK?

I doubt it'll be anything close to mine; I started early.

I had braces when I was eight and went all the way until I was eighteen. Had six total teeth taken out in the process (four wisdom, two upper premolars). Personally, though, it really wasn't that much of a pain in the ass. What really sucked was when they tightened the damn braces every three months or so. Then it was a pain to eat for a few days, but otherwise it was tolerable.

Can't really say I'm opposed to the way my teeth look now, though. The big thing is that I had a gigantic overbite before this all started. I think it was made in part because I fell off a bed when I was a kid...on a trike...yea, I'm bright.

Braces are not really worth worrying about.

At... all...

Ive had them... twice. Both times they went on, both times they came off, no fuss. I didnt have to change much (Avoid gum and sticky stuff, but I never ate that stuff anyways). Off before I knew.

Heres a basic run down of all the scenarios you could go through.

1. They go on, you get none of that extra stuff to worry about, and they come off.
2. You have to do rubber bands for a while. These arent too bad.
3. You get headgear. This is only for like, jaw alignment.
4. You get chains... these hurt... a little bit.
5. You get powerchains... these hurt more than chains.
6. You get some other strange form of pulling.

Yeah... I only got... 1, 2, 4, and 5. It wasnt that bad.

Anyways, you get the week with the spacers, which hurt for a day, you get the week of the braces... they hurt for about 3-4 days... and then every time they tighten it, you get between 12 hours and 2 days of pain... thats pretty much all.

In other news, Im getting my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow... thank goodness for knockout drugs...

@Cirvante: $19000 for jaw surgery? Ouch...the braces and stuff are fine, but that surgery is just expensive

@Riku: My teeth used to be sensitive, but only to the cold stuff, like ice cream, popsicles, etc. I hope that helps make the tightening a little less painful.

@KT: Well, I still have about a 5% chance that something will happen and my wisdom teeth can stay by some miraculous miracle or something... I might do that - it's not that I can't handle pain, I just don't enjoy it, no one does.

@Luigi-San: Yeah, a lot of my friend who had braces said that, along with a lot of people on here. It looks like I habe the be more worried about the tightening then about the braces themselves.

I think I'm more nervous of getting my wisdom teeth pulled then getting braces now
