Well; I must admit I was too lazy to read this whole thread; so here's how to do it:

Download my ExGFX/ExAnimation tutorial from here
http://smwcentral.net/?p=list&type=documents&PHPSESSID=523c2e24c72f585e0a1e2a5e609b5231

Also; I'm not sure how much info is there as I haven't uploaded (or finished) my revised tutorial w/ more info.

Here's stuff you need to know:

Palettes are limited.
You can only use 128 tiles per pic (technically; but if you use 128 then it'll overwrite over all of your land/objects/stuff you NEED) so if you have a big image you may have to re-map it. Personally; I HATE m16-7k as all the damn pics I tryed to use have like 200+ tiles. Anyways; good luck with SMW Hacking!

(Super Mario's Journey; release date: probably never )

The window opened but all I got was garbage on the background (Level 105 background clouds and Ice pipes turned into garbage). The tutorial states to first insert a blank ExGFX file but I have no idea how to do that. Any help on this?

The fact that I'm going to all this trouble to insert a simple background is incredible to me since I HATE dealing with graphics. I can understand pretty much everything in LM tutorials just as long as it doesn't deal with graphics (I don't know why I can NEVER understand anything dealing with graphics). I've even figured out plenty of stuff in LM by playing around with it except for graphics stuff. I can't make sense out of palletes (except simple color changing of objects), GFX, ExGFX, BlockTool, TLP or yyCHR.

One last thing. Am I WAY over my head? My long term plan is to create three small hacks each dealing with a different part of one adventure (20 levels each so I can learn from opinions from the first and apply them to the others). However, I play most of the hacks around here. Custom made graphics, great ideas with great execution and level design that makes me say "This guy's a genius!". To tell you the truth, I'm not that confident that I can actually create something that even comes close to mediocrity.

So if possible, I'm asking for a favor. I have the intro level and level 105 (including level 1CB which is the pipe in level 105) complete (except for the backgroundand maybe graphics). If I can upload this level in an IPS patch along with a text file stating why the intro level is so different than level 105 and someone would review it, I'll appreciate it a lot. If someone would even be kind enough to do this, I'd prefer if they don't tell me it's ok just to hide the fact that it sucks. I need an honest opinion on level design, palletes and everything possible.

That would be all and I thank all those that have helped me thus far and those who even bothered reading this huge post.

I think that's your problem right there. People there are incredibly stupid, and whoever said that doesn't know what he's talking about.

Oh, and various things can cause the problem FPI mentioned. In fact, Ice Man once said that his entire hack was screwed up due to use of mk16-7k. Check this thread and this one for details.

whaaaaaaaaat. please explain what you're talking about a little better. has fusoya confirmed this severe glitch?

if you have windows XP, try using the on screen keyboard, click on shift alt and ctrl, then on your keynoard, the other button.

Note, i havent tried this yet.

I use Lunar IPS for all my patches. And to all those telling, I'm inputting the code in the 16x16 tile map editor. Both copies of Lunar Magic start fine. The 1.62 refuses to load after applying the patch. I have to apply the patch to the .exe file right?

I just googled about a different way of putting backgrounds and I found this message in gamespot:

"for ripping ExGFX yourself it is much more complicated then just using LM. you'll need a program called zSNES, and BG mapper. i really haven't done this before but from what i know is your suppose to take a screenshot of a BG and then open it in BG mapper."

I tried googling BG Mapper but nothing useful popped up. Anyone heard of this?

The patch works for me (but again you need to execute the key combo in the 16x16 tile editor window, because Insert is mapped to 'Insert Manual' in the main editor and the 8x8 tile editor).

To the original poster: What app did you use to patch the file? Try Lunar IPS, it should work.
Does Lunar Magic start without the patch?

The M16-7K doesn't work in the main window because Insert is already mapped to 'Insert Manual' . Anywhere else it works fine.

And normal keyboards support every Ctrl+... combination regardless of limitation. There are some keyboards that don't do that though.

To the original poster: Where is the patch located? (I was not able to find it in the archive). I could try to patch the file myself and see if the patch works.

Most keyboards don't support many keys pressed down at once... I have one that doesn't have that limitation, but overall that's a rare trait, not having that limit.

Yeah, you'll probably need to figure out a way to make your keyboard work- try alternating left and right alt/cntl/whatever buttons when you can, someone else managed to do so and get M16-7K to work.

It must be a keyboard problem since it seems that no one else has problems with it. I have to either find another method to get backgrounds or I'm screwed. How can I patch a copy of LM 1.62 to use Ctrl + Insert instead of the 7 buttons? I have the patch in my computer but I don't know which LM file I have to apply it to. I tried applying it to the .exe and it didn't let me open LM because of an unauthorized modification. If possible (or if it's even allowed) can anyone please upload their patched 1.62? I'd appreciate this a lot.

Yes, it really works - Press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+F1+N+O+Insert *in the Map16 editor*window, and that easter egg will appear

don't make the levels too hard and don't think that every level has to be 100% the same all the way through or have a specific theme (like a pipe level, a jumping level, a level with only goombas, stupid shit like that)

in other words i cant stand when i need to use save states to beat every level and i also hate it when levels are super repetitive. so try to avoid those things

I still can't get it to work. Here's what I've tried:

1) Pressing all 7 buttons at the same time with LM 1.62 and 1.63
2) Pressing Ctrl + Insert in LM 1.62 and LM 1.63
3) Patched the .GID, .CNT and .exe LM files and all combinations I can think off. When the .exe is patched, it says that a fatal error occured because of an unauthorized modification.

Can anyone possibly upload they're patched copy of LM?

By the way, can anyone answer my second question? I forgot all about it since I haven't gotten the m16-7k code to work.

Many keyboards don't let you do that. The patch doesn't work with 1.63, that's why you keep a patched copy of 1.62.

Hmm.....I think the problem here is you are problably doing it on the wrong editor. If not, try these steps:

1. Make sure the 16x16 is highlited like this:

Before you enter the code.(Sorry for the quality I accidentely saved as GIF)

2.You are supposed to enter the code at the same time not like, CTRL then Shift then ....

i'm using an unmodified lunar magic 1.63 and ctrl + shift + alt + f1 + n + o + insert and it works for me. maybe it is a keyboard issue? i'm not sure how to work around that but the code still definitely works in 1.63

Ctrl + Insert was the second code after applying the patch. However I tried on 1.62 and it didn't work (I read somewhere that the patch doesn't work with 1.63).

M16-7K doesn't work for me too (maybe FuSoYa took it out in LM 1.63), but there must be another way to rip/insert backgrounds. I just don't remember it.
