Sounds to me like they're just gonna not prosecute people for petty shoplifting. Doesn't mean they're not going to stop people they catch.

Yes, it seems like a good idea not to waste police resources on petty theft, but certainly this is going to attract a lot of thieves.

I think they make a valid point. Rather than spending time booking some kid for nabbing a chocolate bar or a single DVD, they focus on the bigger fish.

Seems reasonable enough, anyway. There ARE bigger thieves out there that steal alot of stuff from Wal Mart...

On a side note, last year when Madden came out...actually, it was two years ago....anyway, there were some guys who worked for Wal-Mart (the stock/backroom) who were taking the game out of the case and then selling them before the street date, leaving the orginal Madden case empty. Yea, I would be pissed off if I paid $52.99 for an empty case.

You know, I never thought about something like that happening. I guess I should open what I buy at the store so if something's wrong I'll exchange it .

BTW, good idea Anya i'm going to stop shoplifting at 18, too. *phew, 4 more years*

Clothes, movies, games, music, food, common household items, and a few toys. I bet people are going to try and steal some movies now even though that most of them are about $12. I don't shoplift, but this is quite tempting.

Yeah infact this is actually very tempting indeed. I would probaly take all the anime and cartoon DVDs that i could hold and run out of there.

Did anyone actually read the story? Seems like there's a fairly sensible rationale behind the policy change here.
Welcome to Slashdot.

Well, Wal-Mart seems to be evil but they wouldn't survive with thoose tactics here with our labour laws. And for shoplifting... I'm too honest to shoplift. Though I could imagine it be very easy, with the shops around here. But then there's zero-tolerancy policies as far I know on every grocery stuff here.

Also, in Maryland there was a law passed where Wal-Mart has to pay all of it employees at least minimum wage and put a part of their profits towards medical insurance for them. Maybe this will spread to the rest of the states and then they will get rid of this stupid policy because they're losing money from it.

I'm pretty sure that's Wal-Mart policy anyway. As for the minumum wage... well... I think that was already a law

And good tires ain't cheap. I'd imagine a lot of people would steal them if they thought they could get away with it.

Those underpaid worker statistics make me wonder if Shyguy would be better off mowing lawns. >.> <.<

Suddenly those $15 headphones don't seem too bad.

Seriously though, WTF?

[edit] What a waste of post #2500.

I was reading through the article and noticed this little section specifically.

"Wal-Mart said the change would allow it to focus on theft by professional shoplifters and its own employees, who together steal the bulk of merchandise from the chain every year, rather than the teenager who occasionally takes a candy bar from the checkout counter."

So it's true. Wal-Mart employees steal from the store. It's just like in that episode of the Simpsons where they steal everything when they are held overnight.

Anyways, I think the policy is bad. When you turn 13 or 14, you can be charged as an adult. I don't see why they're letting it go if you are under 18. It should be if you are younger than 13 you can't be arrested. I don't like Wal-Mart or it's policies.

Petty theft is stupid. The item is never worth the potential consequences.

The face in hot pavement incident... I remember that. Now stealing from Wal-Mart... what kind of idiot would steal something from Wal-Mart that costs less than 25 bucks and could be broken easily?

Great...I could gank a few rolls of a certain type of corded trim that is the one thing that I can only find at Wally World. JoAnn Fabrics used to sell it, but they don't seem to have it any more, and the one online source I've found has a rather high minimum purchase requirement. There aren't any other general fabric stores around here. Central PA is Bumblefuck when it comes to fabric. At least we have a kickass quilt shop, but that doesn't help me find weird trim.

This particular trim is cord with a densely woven plain cotton cover. It's awesome for putting a raised rounded edge on costume armor. It's bias trim, which means it goes around corners without wrinkling, and the texture is subtle enough that you can paint it with metallic paint and it still looks good. (And if you really want the texture to go away, a few coats of gesso and a buttload of sanding will do it. I like the texture, so I didn't bother.) Here's a shoulder pauldron of the costume I'm bringing to Otakon this year.

Don't mind me...I'm a costume-making dork, and I can't resist pimping my work.

it said wal-mart is going to be on part with other retailers...which means, if there are items at those stores you want that is less than $25, then you may get away scot free?
