I don't AOL speak because I feel like an idiot typing like that. And text similar to what CrimsonGX posted makes me want to SOIP (stab over ip). But I will say things like c u l8r just to fuck with people I know once in a while. | ||||||

When I type, I always type out words fully, and prefer using British spelling (though I occasionally spit in the one or other AE word like "vacation") no matter whether on IMs or forums. My typing is fast enough for it not really to make a difference.
Only exception I allow myself is writing with cut capitalization (only capitalizing "I" because it looks weird otherwise and some names to prevent ambiguosity) and alleviating sentence-end punctuation (which, in turn, seems to look weird in them) in "short-line IM systems" like some games with chat character limit or even IRC, where I often tend to type like... where I often tend to write like this (because IRC line breaks often have the same appeal as pauses in spoken language) | ||||||

...ugh. That kind o' crap gets old really quickly. I'm glad I don't play online games anymore. The slang people used to use on Gunbound was pretty horrible too. I swear to god if I see someone type "liddat" ever again I'm going to have a stroke. | ||||||

I hate AOL speak, mainly because it is like trying to translate something into a different language.
"lol i h8 aok speek!!111 iz lyk l00kN @ sumthin n a diffrnt lang.!!!11 rofl" Seriously, I'm sure it takes longer to read the second example, and it sure as hell took longer for me to type it. I will never understand the need to type "h8" for "hate" or "ur" for "your," I mean shit, it's two more letters. And it takes longer for me to hit the "8" key than just to type "ate," which is a pretty easy set of strokes with just one hand. I type the same almost always, and I really hate knowing that I misspell something. Just knowing that you can look at the word I typed and thing "Hey, what an idiot, he can't spell "hypocrite!" " or something to that extent. I used to type like an idiot, I'll admit to that. But that was in the hayday of AOL speak, I was somewhere around 11 years old, and I used AOL. Ugh. But I was never as bad as those "wHo TyP lYk DiS cUz It HrTz PpLz Iz LoL" Seriously, does hitting "shift" or "caps" for every key really make it worth the time? With the effort you wasted on doing that, couldn't you just type like you're supposed to? I'll never understand people sometimes. | ||||||

I agree that it can be distracting and hard to decipher at times, but I disagree with that logic. I read "tho" as "tho." It doesn't really waste my brain power. The shape of a word is important if you're speed reading or if you're trying to read something that's hard to make out. But if you're reading for comprehension context is more important anyway. | ||||||

It depends. But if you go overboard with simplifying the spelling, it does become harder to read, because you often have to sit there and sound out the word trying to find what word you know that fits that pronunciation. English spelling is sort of like a semi-kanji system, the spelling of a word gives it its "look" in a way. Like the word though, it just has a certain look to it and we know to not pronounce the gh at the end. Like how kanji have their own look, you can sort of see a semi-kanji logic in English spelling. I generally don't answer my cellphone if I'm out doing something or at a noisy place. I'd rather get a text message and just be able to read "i need 2 talk 2 u right now" or something lol@you I don't mind stuff like that. I can understand it perfectly. I'm sure you can, too! I DETEST AOL speak. I always have; heck, when I first started going online I typed like I do now. I mean, if you're a moderately good typer you shouldn't have any problems expressing yourself with words instead of abbreviations. Tarale |
