Bit like me, then? I once owned some kid on MSN once. He said it was faster to write in AOL-speak.

Then I asked him to time my next sentence.

Mainly, an IM is much more like a normal conversation, so it is much more important to say what you want to say without keeping the other person waiting. Checking your spelling/grammar is generally a waste of time in IM. If you've ever IMed me, you know that I don't "sound" the same in IM as I do on this board.

Of course, some people do not understand this due to one of a few reasons, and carry their AIM speak into the message board. These aren't necessairly stupid people. Though some of them certainly are... Some just don't know how to talk on a message board yet.

On the flip side of the coin, I have seen plenty of people with perfect spelling/grammar and absolutely nothing worthwhile or interesting to say.

pssst... ambiguosity isn't a word. it's ambiguity

I don't AOL speak because I feel like an idiot typing like that. And text similar to what CrimsonGX posted makes me want to SOIP (stab over ip). But I will say things like c u l8r just to fuck with people I know once in a while.

When I type, I always type out words fully, and prefer using British spelling (though I occasionally spit in the one or other AE word like "vacation") no matter whether on IMs or forums. My typing is fast enough for it not really to make a difference.

Only exception I allow myself is writing with cut capitalization (only capitalizing "I" because it looks weird otherwise and some names to prevent ambiguosity) and alleviating sentence-end punctuation (which, in turn, seems to look weird in them) in "short-line IM systems" like some games with chat character limit or even IRC, where I often tend to type like...

where I often
tend to write like
this
(because IRC line breaks often
have the same appeal as
pauses in spoken language)

I always thought it made more sense as "color", assuming you pronounce it "col-or" and not "col-hour".
I like colour better, becuse it feels more comfortable to write. Color looks harsh compared to Colour.

Heh, I guess a dead-giveaway of me being American is the fact that I look at "Colour," and "Armour" as more of a "Why the hell is there an extra letter?"

Bleh, a lot of the talk on Gunbound just winds up confusing me. Although I've not had that problem when dealing with people from here

Apparently "liddat" is slang for a phrase that was already slang. Genius, no?

It's short for "like dat?" and was used when someone pwnd someone else.

...ugh. That kind o' crap gets old really quickly. I'm glad I don't play online games anymore.

The slang people used to use on Gunbound was pretty horrible too. I swear to god if I see someone type "liddat" ever again I'm going to have a stroke.

What the hell is liddat?

I hate AOL speak, mainly because it is like trying to translate something into a different language.

"lol i h8 aok speek!!111 iz lyk l00kN @ sumthin n a diffrnt lang.!!!11 rofl"

Seriously, I'm sure it takes longer to read the second example, and it sure as hell took longer for me to type it. I will never understand the need to type "h8" for "hate" or "ur" for "your," I mean shit, it's two more letters. And it takes longer for me to hit the "8" key than just to type "ate," which is a pretty easy set of strokes with just one hand.

I type the same almost always, and I really hate knowing that I misspell something. Just knowing that you can look at the word I typed and thing "Hey, what an idiot, he can't spell "hypocrite!" " or something to that extent.

I used to type like an idiot, I'll admit to that. But that was in the hayday of AOL speak, I was somewhere around 11 years old, and I used AOL. Ugh. But I was never as bad as those "wHo TyP lYk DiS cUz It HrTz PpLz Iz LoL"

Seriously, does hitting "shift" or "caps" for every key really make it worth the time? With the effort you wasted on doing that, couldn't you just type like you're supposed to? I'll never understand people sometimes.

I agree that it can be distracting and hard to decipher at times, but I disagree with that logic. I read "tho" as "tho." It doesn't really waste my brain power. The shape of a word is important if you're speed reading or if you're trying to read something that's hard to make out. But if you're reading for comprehension context is more important anyway.

It depends. But if you go overboard with simplifying the spelling, it does become harder to read, because you often have to sit there and sound out the word trying to find what word you know that fits that pronunciation. English spelling is sort of like a semi-kanji system, the spelling of a word gives it its "look" in a way. Like the word though, it just has a certain look to it and we know to not pronounce the gh at the end. Like how kanji have their own look, you can sort of see a semi-kanji logic in English spelling. Here's something from Strunk and White on simplifying spellings:

The practical objection to unaccepted and oversimplified spellings is the disfavor with which they are received by the reader. They distract his attention and exhaust his patience. He reads the form though automatically, without thought of its needless complexity; he reads the abbreviation tho and mentally supplies the missing letters, at the cost of a fraction of his attention. The writer has defeated his own purpose.

Why the hell even bother with text messaging? Why not just ****ing talk? Jesus christ, it's a hell of a lot easier. And they're called cellular telephones, not cellular telegraphs...
I generally don't answer my cellphone if I'm out doing something or at a noisy place. I'd rather get a text message and just be able to read "i need 2 talk 2 u right now" or something

Except that people who IM me typing like "how r u. i m going 2 mall" get blocked.
lol@you

I don't mind stuff like that. I can understand it perfectly. I'm sure you can, too! I only have problems when someone types like:

heYz..weL iM nOt dAt piSs abOwt dA buL shiTz anYmoE..woAh..iM sUpRisEd i diDnt gOe tOo dA maLL!! wOah..aNd i suRvivEd iTh.i uSuaLLie gOe tOo dA maLL..bUh LiKe i sEd iMa trY tOo keEp oN a DoWn LoE kUhz oF aL dA buL shiT..weL i MitE goE toO dA maL diS sAt kuHz iMa wAtCh a mOviE wiD oNaD!!

For me it's a volume matter. There are many times I like to talk to all my friends where the volume won't allow me to actually speak into the phone. For example, concerts, sports events, parties, and riots.

No, seriously, I called a friend of mine during a riot and apparently she couldn't understand a word I said.

Because Text Messages are great for... well... short messages.

For instance, my Mum will send me one saying that she's "on her way" when she's running late for something, or send me one advising of a change of time to an existing family event. By sending to multiple recipients, she can advise all the family with a few button presses, and we all know what's going on.

I will send the occasional text message advising of simple things like that too. I've used it in the past to advise former housemates to buy things when they're at the shops, and they've used it to ask that I buy things when I'm at the shops too. It's a hell of a lot cheaper to SMS "please buy milk" than it is to have a short conversation about it as well.

I don't tend to use it as a "social" thing, in that I don't tend to have conversations via SMS often, but it's good for passing on brief messages.

I can see it on SMS because you really don't want to spend that much time punching out a message.

I DETEST AOL speak. I always have; heck, when I first started going online I typed like I do now. I mean, if you're a moderately good typer you shouldn't have any problems expressing yourself with words instead of abbreviations.

Speaking of things making you stupider.. I'm positive the internet is making my grasp of grammar and spelling slip away.

I'm picking up weird Americanisms, like "color" instead of "colour", I keep screwing up basic things like there, their and they're.... Or too and to... STUFF I FRICKEN LEARNED IN PRIMARY SCHOOL!!! ARGH!!

I never used to do this!!

And the problem isn't even AOL speak related....

EDIT: And I've developed a typo related issue with i before e except after c, where my fingers switch letters around! Grrr....
