I actually wasn't sure where to rank it, so I took the card game, music, and graphics into consideration. Plus I like twists.

Yeah, SO1 was damn good IMO. Just like I find Tales of Phantasia to be my favorite Tales game. As for Apophis's ranking, how on Earth can you have 8 that high, when it was so sub par it's not even funny. Better than Legend of Dragoon, but still bad. XI screwed up the series for a bit, but XII redeemed it, I found X to be a great product in line with the epic middle installments.

I wouldn't say its going downhill. More like it reached the top of the hill with Final Fantasy IX, then fell over a cliff to a ledge almost at the bottom.

They rank in quality as follows:

1. FF IX
2. FF VI
3. FF VIII
4. FF VII
5. FF IV
6. FF V
7. FF IX
6. FF1,FF II,FF III (tie again)


Haven't had any desire to play any since FFX

@Ogre: So Star Ocean 1 is really that good? I have a working rom, I should try it out sometime ...

Hmm, there's another to add to the list of incredible RPG's that never made it to the states.

I have faith that XII will be good. X might not have been good by Final Fantasy standards, but its still a good game. We're not anywhere near Superman 64 levels yet..

I´m at 70-80 and I´m only in the beginning of disc 2. The bad thing is that you can´t challenge the weapons until disc 3. I want most of the secrets too. I got bored at it after a while but I guess I´ve to continue sometime. I´ve custom buttons so it´ll be hard to get Tifa's Final Limit Break.

And The last boss in FFVI was easy. The hard part were to GET there. Me and a friend had the lowest leveled party on Poltrgeist. That was quite a challenge. Got to use Revenge with Strago a lot.

No no, Star Ocean 2 is good, but 1 is better, and 3 will make you kill yourself. If you care to know why, here goes.

After you change to the second disc, the music becomes techno hip-hop sounding, which is a musical atroucity. The battle system becomes a spam fest in which the enemies now have instant kill AE's, or AE's that juggle you so bad they might as well instant kill. And the story turns into "LOL, IT'S DA MATRIX."
Never has game left such a bad taste in my mouth.

I thought 2 was pretty brilliant, except for some slight padding...

You get that scroll in Cross Cave, and there's two sub-plots that revolve around it in Celine's town and in Linga, but you never find out what the hell it says You give it to the guy to translate it and never see it again!

And the four fields dungeons? Totally unnecessary.

And the boss you have to fight to get the material for the weapons? Please.


In all honesty, I have played 1 or 3 yet. I'll probably end up getting 3 used sometime.

Star Ocean 2's optionals weren't that hard. 3's had some lethality to them on Universe mode, but mostly cause of cheap instant kill abilities. The real difficulty was getting thier stupidly hard awards from some of them if you forgot to before starting Universe. (I forgot to do Weak Attacks on Lenneth....I had to do it on Universe. 1. Amen to that. Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of Phantasia, Terranigma to name a few.

@neo: On Xenosaga II, you're about to hit the 2nd disc! Unless you haven't already. I thought it was a little disappointing getting to the 2nd disc within 10 hours of the game.

exactly. The amount of time I spend game playing as plummeted to non-existent levels since I started college almost 4 years ago. However, I still keep up with games, and just obtaining games with the hopes that once I'm out of school, I will have the time to play...

Here are the following RPGs I've started but not finished.

Final Fantasy 7 -- Summer 2001 (last battle with sephiroth)
Tales of Phantasia -- Aug 2003 (final castle)
Shadow Hearts -- Jan 2004
Dark Cloud -- June 2004
Star Ocean 3 -- Jan 2005
Kingdom Hearts -- June 2005 (still stuck on the 2nd world)
Xenosaga 2 -- Jan 2006 (only 9 hours played, obtained when it first came out)

Yeah, I have to agree with that. I've basically accepted that there's a decent number of great games I'll probably never get to play, because of time and money contraints.

Hell, honestly, without ZSNES I would have never played some of my favorite games

If you ever play Star Ocean: The Second Story, there are some pretty damn hard optional bosses.

There's multiple difficulties to the game. I had to work my ass off just to beat them all on normal. Apparently the hardest difficulty powers up all the baddies by over double...

I bought Parasite Eve a few months back for like $12, and have only played 30 minutes of it or so. And I've had Star Ocean II since forever, and I always hear excellent things about it, but I only played a few hours. Didn't get off the first planet you go to, my friend wanted to slap me when I told him that.

I dunno, I just honestly find it very hard to get into RPG's these days. I absolutely love them to death, but I have a hard time finding the time and devotion to play them. I'm 18, and work quite a bit, and when I'm going to school that doesn't really help out either.

Why the hell would anyone powerlevel in FF8? Talk about counter-productive. Now, beating FF8 at lv9 average was fun. (Squall at 7, Zell at 8, Irvine at like 11) And yeah, I'm with Xeo on FF7's challenges, they are more fun trying without KoTR. (Especially after my blatant abuse at finding a way to auto-battle them. Meh.)

Meh at Knights of the Round. I remember beating Jenova, all Sephiroth's last forms, and everything by just attacking. Of course I did have 4x Attack and Slash-All on some of the characters ... and each attack was always 9,999 damage ... but all I did was literally button mash "X" basically.

So really the first time I beat FFVII I didn't get the actual KoTR Materia for quite sometime, but I did beat the Weapons earning a Gold Chocobo that way, and got the Master Materia's.

All this talk about FF6 powerleveling is reminding me of my antics with that in FF7 and FF8. In the latter, Sephiroth didn't even get a hit on me, thanks to 9999 Knights of the Round added to HP and MP Absorb. The weapons met a similar fate. As for FF8, I think I've spent so much time power-leveling and getting stat boosts effectively, that I now have a blue timer. Just because of the boost abilities alone, I have many characters with base stats in the hundreds, and am working on maxing them out. I could easily crush the last bosses if I wanted to.

Yeah. I remember when I first completed it (On Anthology) most of my "higher" characters were just in the 60's, and some for my other parties were just in the mere 40-50's, and it still wasn't that bad.

I beat the game when I finally got an SNES copy with one level 99 party, and Kefka and everything was just a joke. Not only just having insane Speed, stats, and whatnot but having a cast of several characters being able to cast Life 3, Cure 3-4?, Haste 2, and whatnot like that just makes you invincible.

I dunno, I just had fun maxing out the characters I "liked" a lot.

I've actually (hangs head in shame) never beaten FF6. By the time I could probably go in there and make Kefka humble, old country way, I'd be knee-deep in getting all of Gau's Rages and then just get bored and--ooh, something shiny.

And another thing that really grinds my gears: not being able to have every item. In the words of a great character of Gregory Helms's, whassupwitdat?
