Bit of a bump, but whatever, it's on the first page.

I'm going with "no", though I'll step up and say that St. Anger isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. In fact, take away Lars's "trash cans for toms and a steel chair for a snare" drum sound and I'd say that actually elevates it to somewhere between "good" and "great" status.

Even with the terrible production on the drums, though, it's still better than the Load albums. The impression I got with St. Anger was "Not as good as Kill em All through ...and Justice, but at least they're trying again...."

Best metal ever? Yes and no. If you asked this question in 1998 I'd have concluded with yes but now I am not so sure. Their self-titled album (the black one) remains a hall of fame worthy album although Metallica fans don't agree it's their best one. Maybe they did sell out when they made it but so what? You wouldn't except lots and lots of money for doing what you've been doing for years? And what's wrong with playing the corporate game once in a while if it advances your life in a positive way? I liked Load too but that's beside the point.

Final answer: no.

Heh. Too right.

Dillinger is fucking awesome. The only band I can think of that can boast a firebreathing main vocalist!

The Mars Volta have an amazing stage presence too. 10 people on stage at once now (12 if you include the occasional live appearances of Flea and John Frusciante) just giving everything their all.

It's an amazing sight.

Mehklesdoie.

I didn't really post that video to try and prove that point, just thought it was a good song to share.

And yeah, I've seen some videos of Malmsteen dancing. (basically)

Heh, they were infact standing still in that video.

They seemed more lively when I went.

But of course, the "wtf stage present I must move/showoff/do whatever" goes to Yngwie Malmsteen.

When i was a kid i loved Metallica, but even then i did'nt consider them the best metal band. I've always felt that the Megadeth album "Killing Is My Business" was much better than any of Metallica's albums. Nowadays I dont care for anything Metallica has done starting with the black album. And their stuff before that, although it's not bad and is occasionally really cool, is blown away by so many other metal albums. For me the greatest metal albums are Iron Maiden's 1st 2 albums, and Mercyful Fate "Dont Break the Oath".

I am sooo gonna have to disagree with this... Nothing personal, of course.

Trivium is a decent band, but a lot of their sound is actually ripped off of Metallica. I don't know if you've ever seen them live (I saw them twice, once at Ozzfest and again opening for Children of Bodom), but they close all their sets with the opening/ending from Metallica's song Ride the Lightning. One of their songs has almost the exact same drum beat and rythm guitar from the end of One by Metallica. I'm not accusing them of plagarizing, but what they're doing isn't exactly new.

Plus Trivium has only one album out, that doesn't really explore any new territory. Metallica (And Megadeth at the same time, they deserve some credit) made 3-5 solid albums (depending on who you ask) of material that was like nothing ever written before. Trivium haven't done anything new, and they haven't shown that they have lasting power and the ability to evolve their sound further, like Metallica did.

It could happen in the future, but it's way too early for that comparison.

(edits are just me rewording/clarifying)

Really? Can't say I've even ever heard of them.

But I do put most of my metal focus to Europe ...

Aye, but on the same token I liked Metallica's Mechanix more than Megadeth's Mechanix =)

Honestly my favorite band ever. I like all of their music, even Load, Reload, and St. Anger. Those 3 weren't the greatest, but I like them.

I liked their Black Album, but not like I hear others say how great it was. My favorite of their CDs was the Master of Puppets, but I also liked Ride the Lightning and Kill em' All a lot too.

Even Metallica being my favorite band, I don't think they can be considered the best metal band ever.

(I wonder how many people noticed that if you take the 98 off my user name, then take acillatem and put it backwards, it's Metallica...)

Simply put, I'd have to agree with this.

I also liked Megadeth's Mechanix more than Metallica's The Four Horsemen.

Metal has moved on so much from when metallica were in their prime - and it's branched off into so many different sub genres and experimentations that it's hard to define what metal really is now. If we're talking about the entire wide range of 'metal' then the greatest metal band could be anyone from the Dillinger Escape Plan, to Opeth, to Isis to Cult of Luna.

And just to be clear - Megadeth's 'Rust in Peace' > all metallica albums ever. For sure. Master of Puppets does come close though.

While Metallica is a metal band... they don't embody metal. They are not metal gods. They don't have that epic aura about them.

So no, not the best. I can't think right now, I'll edit in my nomination at a later time.

Gamma Ray.

That one band nobody ever heard of!

Also, I agree with Ziff about the Black Album. I even shouldn't say this, but I didn't even really like And Justice for All so much either. Maybe that's because I'm weird and still say Kill em' All is my favorite album that they put out.

Fact is, like others said they were / are very successful, but nowhere near the best.

PS: Megadeth: The System Has Failed destroys all of Metallica's thrashless albums.

Random PS: I'm listening to The Very Best of Dio right now. Its fucking great.

PS to the third power: I'd go to say Judas Priest are true long lived metal gods. Angel of Retribution was pretty awesome.

I second the Opeth nomination. At least for the time being. I havent heard all of their albums, barely discovered them 2 months ago, but I have heard a lot and enjoy a good 90% of everything I have heard.

Seriously, that album was weaksauce and the album where they sold the fuck out.

It was the album where they sold out, but I thought it was still a good album. I think a lot of people would be more receptive of the album if it didn't have the name "Metallica" on it.

Best band ever? No. I used to think so 3-some years ago, but then I got into Megadeth, and then In Flames... And then a lot of other bands. I don't think I could name a favorite metal band right now. If I had to pick a single band... Opeth.

Honestly though, I'm more of a prog-rocker than a metalhead.
