I thought it was that, if there's no symbol, uppercase letters were major and lowercase were minor.

I'm banking on him not knowing anything of that, though, which is why I asked. Nothing personal, but when you're new... you're new.

Just to let you know, the chord letter means nothing alone. Chords are described by a letter and a quality, like "Major" or "Minor" amongst others. That'll be something you learn more of down the road.

You've probably been taught major chords, which would put you in the key of A Major.

right now, I just have an acoustic... but thanks anyway...

but I can play the basic A series chords easily (they're easy... ), and I sorta figured out how to play "la cucaracha" by accident. lol.

I don't think that a newbie should add a floating trem to their list of things that will piss them off while learning guitar. If the pros of a locking bridge (staying in tune, mainly) outweigh the cons (longer time to change strings/use alternate tunings/etc) then go ahead, but if the locking bridge is also a floating trem (Floyd Rose or copy), get the damn thing blocked so it only bends down.

I guess I should add that it's not a "geniue" Floyd Rose but one of the imitations. It's still enough to turn me away from them forever.

It should be noted you lie.

Best advice I can give you? PRACTICE. Then practice some more. If you're not sure you've been practicing enough, practice some more. As I'm told is all the rage these days, amirite?

I own three guitars, the 2nd best of those having a Floyd Rose with a locking trem. It is by far the biggest pain in the ass I've ever had to deal with. Dropping from E Standard to Drop D, which should take a few seconds and a good ear, instead takes a few minutes and one of those hexagonal wrench things. Changing strings in a pain in the ass. I don't even know how to check the intonation on it, I just pay other people to fix that for me on that guitar.

A locking trem is ok, but if you are new ("New" here meaning under 2 years of experience) I would make SURE that it isn't a locking trem with a Floyd Rose.

If you're into metal, check out these brands: Carvin, Schecter, Ibanez, and Jackson. Do NOT get a BC Rich. I know that's still down the road, but it's never too early to start looking at things.

I wasn't saying you shouldn't have gotten the inexpensive one you have now. That's definately the way to go if you've never played. I'm talking your next guitar. Save up the extra couple of hundred dollars and go for something that'll last you longer.

If you're into death, you should look into models that either have a fixed bridge or a trem that you can lock down.

I play an SG with the innards ripped out and replaced. I hate gibson's rhythm/treble switch and tone knobs. And I hate humbuckers.
But I love the look and the fixed bridge.

I'd rather be playing an Ibanez but I'd have to lock down the tremolo and that'd take all the fun out of it

yeah, Im into heavy metal, death metal, and classical mostly -- but I enjoy playing all styles of music. I wouldve gotten a better one now, but I couldnt get a job this summer -- well, I could have, but I couldnt get there.

anyway, Im gonna practice as hard as I can. Ive waited for years for this. as for bad habits, I thought it would be easier to fret with different fingers instead of the appropriate ones, and it is, but I didnt do that because I figured it would hurt me in the long run.

I just think its... awesome. I know im no hero (was that a pun on the game guitar hero? I never played it), but its just... fun for me. fun I havent had in a long time. it just feels great to hear your guitar sing -- even just a simple chord like D (my favorite so far).

music fulfills me in a way I cant explain. especially music with powerful emotions (hate, love, fear, sadness, joy). thats why I like metal and classical. they show extreme emotion in a pure form thats just... magical. I love my keyboard too, just not as much.

hopefully I'll have as much talent as I do with my keyboard (im pretty good), and not as much as I do with art -- I cant draw a stick figure -- I hated art class last year.

If you practice and get decent and decide you like playing, there's no reason you should get a low end guitar. You'll just get tired of it and want a new one.

I'd say get a lower dollar strat or telecaster. I happen to like mexican standard stratocasters more than american standards. And the mexican strats come in blonde and it looks sexay. ...Or if you like playing lead or having a guitar that frets really fast buy a used ibanez rg570 or something on ebay.

First off, everything comes with time. Try to correct your mistakes, but don't think they'll be fixed overnight. Read, and DO take lessons when you can afford it money/time-wise, and make sure that you don't form bad habits that help you now, because they might hurt your playing down the road.

Also, what guitar you will want depends greatly on what kind of music you like, which we don't know.

yeah, I just felt sbiffy and decided to post this .
Im teching myself to play guitar (from a "Dummies" book -- hey, they're pretty good!). I couldnt afford lessons, and I bought a really (and I mean bottom of the line) crappy guitar. $50 on amazon. lol.

it plays fine, and it IS surprisingly in tune with other guitars (pretty much perfectly) for the price it cant be beat I guess... it does seem a bit hard to play, and I was having some trouble fretting at first, but Im getting better each time I practice. but it's really annoying when your fingers hit other strings when fretting and it screws you up -- happens to me quite a bit.

I really dont know much about guitars -- this is the first one Ive ever owned... I knew it wasnt a great quality guitar when I got it, but Im happy. Ive wanted to lean to play for years (as long as I can remember), and its MUCH more satisfying than playing my keyboard.
