They're both health threats *if* you keep them untreated for a long period of time. I mean, if someone was putting on weight for no real reason, you'd think they'd visit the doctor to try figure out what's up. :\ |

Weird stuff like this always happens on those medical shows, and then it ends up you have some tumor in your brain. Sometimes people bleed through their skin because of some other problem in the body. It's a good thing you went to get that checked out, and I hope you don't have anything. |

Well, I think I said this already, but the Thyroid is a gland in your neck that regulates the distribution of growth hormones in your body. It's not quite cancer, but it is a pretty big annoyance.
This is, of course, assuming I actually HAVE any kind of infection. Keep in mind, results haven't come in just yet. |

But it's more than that, isn't it? Isn't an overactive thyroid (or an underactive one?) a health threat? |
Cynthia Posts: 3396/5814 |
Well, if your thyroid was the problem, it'll either make you gain weight or lose weight. If it's hyper, you're not gaining; if it's hypo, you are since the thyroid's slow. |

... What the hell... Are you really that inattentive? Or do you just not know what words mean? It was three ****ing posts before that... |

You could get thyroid cancer, however. And radiation therapy could be required to treat a thyroid problem; but we're not talking about chemo or anything like that. You'd just have to visit the hospital a couple of times and wouldn't feel any ill effects. (I know people who've had thyroid problems and it's really not a big deal to treat in most cases.) |

Yeah, that's what I thought. I know what the thyroid is, I know plenty of people who have overactive thyroids and the like, but... I didn't think it was related to cancer. |

Your thyroid is in your throat: It regulates growth hormones and the like. A thyroid infection would be completely unrelated to cancer...
The cancer thing was just a joke. I'm just hoping I'm not too sick to work, now. |

I'll be wishing the best for you Grey. But I don't drink so... *pulls out some sparkling cider* But a thyroid problem doesn't automatically mean cancer, right? |

Originally posted by Grey I'll drink to that. Think positive, though. It's probably nothing big. I hope the tests come out ok. |

Well, I went to the doctor today: Woke up with another spot, this one bigger than the last one. About the size of a child's fist.
The doctor had no idea what it could be, so he took some of my blood and they're doing bloodwork on it. They don't get the results in until next week, so until then I just gotta wait. If it is something serious, like a thyroid condition or something akin to that, I'll be sent to an epidemiologist (sp?) for further examination. Here's to hoping I don't have cancer. |

I also suspect it's not a major issue. I just thought it might be something like eczema cause I sometimes have dried blood on my clothes and it's cause I've scratched an itch till it bled in my sleep.
I don't tend to do that so much anymore, but I did a lot when I was a teenager. |

I don't think random bleeding without any other effects is a bad medical sign.
Now, if it happened in the afternoon or something, then maybe there'd be some concern. You know, because a spot would appear out of nowhere and maybe Grey would actually feel pain. |

I'd have gone to the doctor. I... think it's something you should just make sure isn't harmful.
But if it's stopped, hooray. |

No rashes, and recently (for two nights now) it seems to have let up, after a particularly bad spot on the last night that the blood was there. I'm still confused as hell, but for the time being it's not happening, so I guess I'm ok.
If it keeps happening, I'll keep giving you guys an update, but thus far it looks like I'm not dying anymore, nor do I have stigmata in my chest. Cool beans. |

Are you noticing any kind of a rash or such? I would imagine that given what you've described, there'd be some kind of a rash such as eczema. Perhaps you itch in your sleep? |
