classic.

Definitely one Kurt Russell movie I need to see still.

Which reminds me, anyone ever seen the Escape movies? I only saw Escape from New York. It was quite different, but cool at the same time. It gave off that futuristic cyber punk feel that Blade Runner, Total Recall (which I'd also say was a great movie ...), and Terminator gave off.

Its also almost humorous just how much Kurt Russell's Snake Pliskin inspired the Solid Snake we see in the Metal Gear games. The way he talks, everything is there. Its pretty awesome.

Horror Movies from the 80's were pretty damned good. I particularly enjoyed Creepshow.

I remember watching the Labyrinth as well. Very cool Jim Henson flick!

Yes, the eighties most definitely had the most attractive array of cinematic adventures. The Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones movies, the aforementioned The Wizard, *batteries not included, Flight of the Navigator, and Stand By Me, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, The Empire Strikes Back, The Breakfast Club...and the list obviously goes on.

Batman also started a return in comic-book movies which surged through the early 90's with some quality flicks.

I just remembered another one.

Adventures in Babysitting.

Suburban teenager gets stuck babysitting two suburban kids. Her friend calls her in a panic from a seedy bus station in downtown Chicago, begging to be rescued. She goes, but she has to bring the kids with her. All manner of plausible and implausible hilarity ensues.

I saw it when it was still new, and I totally wanted a Thor helmet like the little girl, who was about my age. I rented it some years later and it was still funny as hell. It's campy and absurd and it just somehow works.

Just recently, I read that this movie is being remade. Way to be out of ideas yet again, Hollywood. Somehow I bet nobody will give a crap about the remake 20 years later.

Princess Bride is good stuff and all, but what about another Rob Reiner movie, This Is Spinal Tap?

(After a concert where Spinal Tap have been humiliated because "[They] had a Stonehenge in danger of being trampled by dwarves!"; their manager produces Nigel Tufnel's original sketch-on-a-napkin of the prop in question, which clearly shows 18" instead of the proper 18')
David St. Hubbins: "Yes, but you're not an confused as Nigel is! IT'S NOT YOUR JOB to be as confused as Nigel is!"

And other classic scenes; getting lost backstage, getting stuck in the pod, and the list goes on. RANDOM FUN FACT: During one Marty DiBergi interview where they're discussing reviews of Spinal Tap albums, David St. Hubbins remarks "I've never heard that one before." in response to one of the reviews. Michael McKean (Who played St. Hubbins) actually hadn't heard it before; it was ad-libbed for that take.

Wonderful... movie, my favorite quote is as follows.

"What's the matter Colonel Sanders?"

"Chicken?"

Spaceballs is pure genious... and Pizza the Hut... man what orginallity.

Whenever I think of eighties movies, the first thing that comes to mind is that scene in the breakfast club where they're dancing along the railing to "We Are Not Alone".

Actually, whenever I just think of the eighties, that's the first thing that comes to mind.

According to my friend they're supposedly bringing it back to theaters sometime soon.

Blade Runner = bad adaptation of a great book with really nice cinematography. If you're not into really revolutionary camera angles and shadowing and shit like that...its not all that great. Read "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?" instead. Far better.

Bogus. I've never read the book and I think Blade Runner's stellar. It's got such a phenomenal atmosphere, and the camerawork's great. I look forward to the Final Cut coming to theaters and DVD next year. I hope it really is Ridley Scott's definitive version.

The Princess Bride is my favourite. I watched it on the weekend with a friend... well, some of it... before heading to bed. I like the swordfight at the start with Inigo and The Man in Black

I'm also dazzled by Vizzini's amazing logic in the Battle of Wits.

Man in black: [turning his back, and adding the poison to one of the goblets] Alright, where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink - and find out who is right, and who is dead.
Vizzini : But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine it from what I know of you. Are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you...But you must have known I was not a great fool; you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
Man in black : You've made your decision then?
Vizzini : [happily] Not remotely! Because Iocaine comes from Australia. As everyone knows, Australia is entirely peopled with criminals. And criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me. So, I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.
Man in black : Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.
Vizzini : Wait 'till I get going!! ...where was I?
Man in black : Australia.

Well, you're in luck.

And yes, Spaceballs and the Princess Bride win in ways heretofore unknown. But what you're all forgetting are the two Me Films Named For Songs. You know, Stand By Me, Lean On Me?

I have to add something else to this thread.

Some of you may not know it, but Wolfman does in fact have nards.
Monster Squad kicked all kinds of ass.

The Princess Bride, that's a movie I should buy. The humor is great.

Also ... Spaceballs.

Ah, The Wizard. It gave my best friend and me a shared monster crush on Fred Savage. And the first look at Super Mario Bros. 3, which was a major big deal in 1990...and that's putting it mildly. I used to have dreams about what that game would be like.

I need to watch The Princess Bride again. I saw it years ago and thought it was great, and from what I understand, it stands the test of time very well. People everywhere quote it, and I don't know any of the references except "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." I remember liking Willow a lot, too.
