It's not Windows' or Linux's fault; it's the PC architecture with its loose and/or nonexistent standards. Mac has the right idea - have one company build the OS and all the hardware, but let people use third-party devices if they're willing to deal with them. (Though I have to admit I never heard of Linux dropping devices at random.  )
Anyway if you're both unable to connect through the modem and can't get into the router config, then it seems like a problem with the laptop's NIC and/or drivers, or possibly the cable being used. Since both wired and wireless connections are failing it seems most likely to be a software/driver problem, or they broke some hardware component used by both network devices. |

if you think getting hardware to work for windows is a pain, linux isn't any much easier... unless your hardware is generic, sometimes getting linux to recognize your hardware is a fun experience. With linux, you definately need the OS to be on the Internet. Otherwise, to get stuff onto your linux box, you probably need to use recordable CDs
as for your laptop to not be able to use your router, it could be the case that your NIC is busted--so try connecting it to a known router that works. If your NIC works, then try another computer with the router you have. If that works, then the cable you are using could be of the wrong type (but I kind of doubt that is the case). You could try resetting the router and reinitialize it to the default state... |

I couldn't get the laptop to connect running through just the modem either. It seems like not being able to connect AND not being able to access my router's internal setup is a coincidence.
I get the little or no connectivity thing occasionally when I'm setting up peoples' networks or computers, but usually if I fiddle around enough it goes away. I've formatted this laptop and used the utility cd for drivers many times and it has always worked. I'm fairly convinced it's a case of Windows being a shit OS. Maybe it's finally time I tried to learn Linux... |

Strange... I've never encountered that problem. I know that Linksys isn't always the ebst, but I've foudn their Wired and Wireless routers to qork quite well, prehaps you should try one of those and see if it works any bette rthan your belkin one?
Also, try Resetting the Router (Consult it's specific documentation on how to do that), and then try accessing it. Seeing as you can get through, it's only the router denying you access based on some strange criteria, because you ARE connecting to it, if you can get internet through it. |

I just got my laptop back from the shop (again) and installed windows and whatnot. To get the wireless working, however, I need to connect to Windows Update because there are no drivers for the onboard wireless on the cd and ECS does not and never will have drivers for it on thier site, apparrently.
I installed the LAN and restarted, then I plugged in to the back of the router. Limited or No connectivity. Wonderful. I get that sometimes for no reason, and if I re setup the network enough times it goes away. (Gotta love how in Windows you can do the same EXACT thing on the same machines multiple times and the outcome varies.) I thought perhaps it's because my router might not have the mac address for the wired lan in the lappy (I use MAC address filtering and it's set for the laptop's wireless) so I went to access the router. Nada. So I came in here to access the router. Nope. It'll let me connect to the net, but when I type in the router's address I get a big fat Page Cannot Be Displayed. Wonderful. I'm about to go plug the laptop directly into the cable modem so I can go ahead and update (hopefully,) but I'm stuck on this router issue. It's a Belkin WAP, btw. |
