I haven't given Videora a try yet, because I had nothing to convert... but now I do, so let's try ;D
I'll tell you how it goes shortly. Edit: Yeah, it works without shutting my comp off now. As for MBM5, it apparently doesn't support my computer. But I guess I don't need it now anyway, right? |

Did you try Motherboard Monitor and see if it starts heating up when you run Videora? |
neotransotaku Posts: 1334/1860 |
so, running videora still causes the same issue to happen? then, my guess is something in vidora is causes something that tells the CPU to turn off. |

It's not at all... Videora is a very basic program, nothing fancy. But after a few minutes of using it, my computer is done for. I don't know why... I'd imagine that loading ImageReady would require more work, but I'm no computer nerd. |

...You might want to check your fan anyways, Danielle. I've worked with laptops on leathery desks (a.k.a, the covering weere fluffy) that didn't have heat issues, so it's your call there. |

Originally posted by Danielle You probably shouldn't. As far as I am concerned, video is one of the most heavy things for computers to work with. |

Originally posted by neotransotaku I did this, and my gosh, it's amazing the difference it has made. My computer has been on for a while now, and it's still cool to the touch. I've like, never had that before. I put 4 old n64 games that I don't care for underneath it, each on a side, so it's balanced and mostly off the desk. I guess that was the biggest problem, my desk was making it overheat. THANK YOU NEO Now I just have to run Videora and see if it shuts off... |

Yeah, overheating does it (happened to me recently, even thought it was my desktop, I was like, wtf, why did it shut down. Then I had to unplug the power cord for it to work).
Good thing your lappy didn't explode |

I also have advice, if you have a moving screen saver, it might keep it on.
It works for my comp. |

Okay, I'll check that out when I'm back on my laptop. What temperature should it be, as a laptop? |
HyperHacker Posts: 2293/5072 |
Yeah, my HP desktop overheated (the fans it came with weren't enough to keep it cool ), and it would just reboot without notice when it got too hot.
Motherboard Monitor 5 will probably tell you how your CPU is doing temperature-wise. My Sempron 2200 averages around 30°C when idle, but that's in a desktop, so your mileage may vary. (It was actually 40°C before I updated the BIOS. ) |

Yeah, it's an HP laptop. =\ I find it rather pathetic that videora makes it work that hard, though.
I'll try propping it up so that it's not on the surface of my desk, maybe that will make a difference. If it doesn't, then I'll have to send it in, bah. Thanks for your help guys |

My friend had similar symptoms with his HP laptop. According to the HP forum, he found out the laptop is designed to shut off without notice if the CPU was overheating. CPU will overheat quite quickly if the CPU fan isn't not working. So, maybe there is issues with the CPU fan or maybe there is just too much dust build up in the laptop?
Uh...since it seems you are suspecting that, maybe you can blow compressed air while holding a vaccum to possibly remove the dust? At the same time, maybe elevating the laptop, so that the bottom of the laptop isn't completely resting on your desk may help. I had a laptop that would heat the surface it was on quite quickly so it would not have good heat dissipation. So, try to prop up your laptop in a fashion that you would jack up a car. |

Try having the fan replaced or checked. Every laptop I've ever worked with (3) has always run quite cool to the touch. You fan is spinning, but that's not a guarantee that it's doing it's job. |

Hmm... well my laptop is always pretty hot when it's running, but I can hear the fan running... is there any way I can tell it's the fan without having to send it in for repair? =\
And if it is the fan, does videora actually make my computer work that hard? No other program gives me that problem... but with videora it's almost a guarantee. HH: I have XP, so I'll check it; however I'm on a different computer and will be until Monday, so I'll have to get back to you about the logs and auto restart option. As for shutting down, when I usually shut down it does the "windows is shutting down, saving settings blahblah" thing. But when it shuts off when idling or with videora, it just shuts off without the traditional "shutting down, saving settings" routine. It just goes from running everything to a black screen. And it doesn't reboot until I turn it back on. |

...sounds like a letter I read in an old MaximunPC magazine... The porblem turned out to be a temperature problem, because the CPU had an inadequate fan, and was overheating and shutting itself down. How warm does you laptop get right before it shuts off? (Or right after) |

Originally posted by Danielle You mean with the "saving your settings, windows shutting down" text, or just right off immediately?
They're only in newer versions of Windows such as 2000 and XP. Automatic restart is in Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery Settings -> Automatically Restart. It's probably not the problem but you should disable it anyway. Event log is in Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Event Viewer. Just see if it reports anything around the time it shuts off or when you open Videora. These might change or not be there at all depending what version you have though. |

It doesn't turn off when I'm using it unless I run videora, but I don't think the two problems are connected. The only time it turns off is when I idle for a long time, like overnight.
It has never turned off on me when I'm on it during the day doing my usual things, like AIM or board browsing or photoshop fun. Nothing unusual when I shut it off, it turns off the way it always has. As for automatic reboot on crash and event log, I have no clue what or where those are. |
