It's probably all about reading your opponent and seeing if there's any tells that give away what his gameplan is. If you can do that, then maybe your odds of winning each round are above 33.33333~%. Probably all about keeping your cool and a poker face. |

It's really more about... Reading your opponent. Each move has its own psychological profile. For instance, the rock, symbolized by a fist, is more aggressive, and many players will start using it more often if they start losing, whether they realize it or not. Paper is a more calm play, and scissors is somewhat tricky, because it loses to the obvious rock but defeats rock's counter. Now, that's a vast oversimplification, but eh, I can't really hope to explain everything about something as complex as RPS. |

Oh well... you have the good (First 48) and the bad (this crap), but...
And yes, there is some psycologicial strategy -- for example, saying directly to your opponent that you're picking rock before the throw. More than likely, the opponent will take it as a bluff and use the safety (Scissors or Paper), and you can use that to your advantage and pick Scissors for a Win/Lose or Lose/Lose situation. (repeat with other forms) |

Heh. You hate it because it's pure luck, though... But if it was pure luck, I wouldn't win it 80% of the time against my friends, now would I? I mean, RPS isn't my favorite game or anything, but at least I know strategy when I see it. There's a psychological factor behind each individual move and each gambit, but eh. I suppose that isn't really obvious at first. Your outright bashing of it, though, is just stupid.
And for the record, $50,000 sounds worthwhile to me... |

How did I know that if this were something I hated, you'd love it?
P.S. I'd rather not go to a tourny, I'll spend time practicing something worth while! |

Bah. RPS is only a game of luck when played between two people who don't know how to play. RPS is all about psychology. Go to a tournament and see if you win "1/3" of the the time. And by the way, though there are three options, because they have no advantage over the same play, it would be 1/2 in a random environment, not 1/3... |

Did you see the video of the first link?
These people are way into a 33% game of chance. |

ESPN2 had the World Domino Championship the other day. And from the intro montage, it looked like those dudes really got into their dominoes. |

Need I say more?
Is there no low that T.V. can reach? One of there strategies from the contenders is "Frat boys tend to pick rock in a form of masculinity." *stabs* But wait, it gets better! Two lawyers settle a case with "RPS" as the pros call it Rocky VI: Rock Paper Scissors (2/9/07) And my personal favorite RPS: A 2006 Winter Olympics Sport What's next I ask you guys, profesional coin flipping? :Terry has practiced all his life for this moment, calling leading mathematicianse from all around the world, it turns that tails does have a .00002% advantage, and he knows it. Just look at the concentration his fingers have as he positions it, feeling tails will come! |
