We used to be a part of Denmark, we've never been a part of Sweden.

We were in a union with Sweden, and were part of the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway. It's just like Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland is in a union with England, and are part of the United Kingdoms of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

To say that we were a part of Sweden is ignorant and wrong. It is true, however, that we were a part of Denmark, as Denmark-Norway was not a union, but rather Denmark bossing us around.

And Tarale, it is a very special day here, that is celebrated in a very special way. It is not used as an excuse to get a day off, but people rather make an effort to actually celebrate the day as best they can. It's really all about children, though, as it starts off with children's parades, continiues with the consumption of god-knows-how-many hot dogs and ice creams (for many Norwegians, May 17th is traditionally the first day of the year you eat an ice cream. I had an ice cream on May 17th, even though there was still snow on the ground outside), before it continiues with organized children's activities and competitions. There are also many speeches by many prominent figures, and in general a lot of activity and a lot of festivities.

That being said, since I'm not a child anymore and I live in a town where I know no families (I study here, all my childhood friends etc. etc. are a long way from here), I had no reason to do an all-out celebration. As such, all I did for May 17th this year was to put on a nice shirt, my nice coat, go out and eat the aforementioned ice cream, congratulate some friends on the occasion, and meet up with some friends for a session of Vampire: The Masquerade all night long...

Haah... I wasn't in Norway that day.
I was on a 1-day trip to Denmark, so I missed everything.
There was celebration and a parade on the boat as well, so I guess it wasn't all that bad. XD

Note to self: Don't make threads on the Norwegian Constitution Day while under the influence of.. stuff. This thread just looks awful, and a great country like Norway deserves better than this. Haha.

Well, for me, the 17th of May is mostly about the parades (with children, instead of military parades.), people wearing bunads, hot dogs and ice cream. There is also a russ (high school graduates) parade later in the day, and a speech by the russ president, which I had planned to watch, but somehow managed to forget all about.

Hm... sounds a bit like Australia Day.

Do you do anything special for it (besides the parades?) or do you just use it as an excuse to sleep in, have bacon and eggs for breakfast, and get drunk at a social gathering for the rest of the day?

Congratulations fellow nordic brothers, hope you people had a good national day. Remember that you fellows used to be a part of Sweden after all...

neotransotaku: Well, 4th july is what we call a "national day of america" here.

You Norwegians are probably poking fun at our swedes having our flag day on 06/06/06 this year. :/ (which happens to be my birthday too)

It's Constitution Day, and we're celebrating the 192nd anniversary of our constitution (even though the country itself is only 100 years old. It's kinda complicated) by watching the elementary, middle and high school student parade before getting drunk off our asses.

Kinda like 4th of July for you Americans, just with parades instead of fireworks.

July 1st is still a ways off and it's not like I really celebrate it that much... aside from looking out in the sky to see the fireworks.

Happy Norwegian whatever Day.

The only significance of this day to me is that it's exactly 1 month after my birthday.

Regardless, happy norwegian day to all the folks of norway.

Is there an U.S. equivalent of this day? If there is nothing special about the day, then every country needs a random day to celebrate
