Which is sad considering that Info-Zip has better compression than WinZip and has a self-extracting format. Oh well.

I didn't hear about it, but it wouldn't be surprising. A lot of programs, even commercial ones, come in a Winzip self-extractor with a big "UNLICENSED VERSION NOT FOR REDISTRIBUTION" message.

Didn't someone recently discover that some files in Windows XP were made using an illegal copy of a program? Contained the cracking group's name and everything, IIRC...

Well, I knew about that already though didn't see any proof for it... seems like it's for real then. Though, the BSD license allows it, or Microsoft wouldn't done it.

In some ways, Microsoft is smart enough not to reinvent the wheel

Out of boredom... search for Copyright strings in Windows programs, it's actually surprising how much stuff is not Microsoft-original material. Take the whole networking stack and the userspace programs that go with it, it seems to be ripped right from BSD! It's pretty funny; take ftp.exe as an example, attatched picture
