Isolated Warrior uses monochrome mode to make the screen flash when you shoot a boss.

As for the color de-emphasis bits, Super Spy Hunter enables all three when you pause the game, and The Immortal leaves them on all the time in order to darken the palette.

Yeah man sorry about that layout, I seriously forgot I had put that there before I posted. I'm still trying to extinguish the flames but I'm still getting some PMs from Metal Knuckles trying to get some reaction out of me. Much love for everyone.

My God, it's not the layout I was reacting to. *slaps head in exasperation*

Either way, you acknowledged your behavior, and I'm all good with that right now. That was the only "reaction" I was aiming for, so don't worry about any more PM's. And being from Mass, I do believe that being a Dickhead is on my birth certificate somewhere.

Boh, monochrome mode is good for the retro feel. If you could play Frogger with the blocky frog or Frogger with the 3d-animated frog, and presuming that both ran with the exact same engine, which would you go for? I garuntee that at least half of the community would go for blocky, all for the nostalgia. This might not be the same case, but it's more or less similar. And while some blocky Frogger fans wouldn't go for it, I still bet a percentage of the community would.

Edit: Quotes fixed.

Yeah, I'm sure that now, monochrome is good for a retro feel, but I was more spaking about why the NES would have such a feature in the first place. When the console was made, wouldnt't the idea be to push boundrys and be more hightech, not make a feature in the system that allows you to be less high tech?

Ah, so that's why most emulators don't flash correctly, I never even thought about it using monochrome to achive the effect.

The only game I can think of that actually put it to good use is Final Fantasy. When you lit up an Orb, it would create a "beam of light" from you charcter to the upper-left corner of the screen. It accomplished that by turning on/off monochrome mode every scanline for the effect.

Other games uses it for flashing -- like when lightning strikes, a game might flash to monochrome mode for a frame -- or when you enter a battle in FF3 or something I think it flashes in and out of monochrome mode -- but those effects could be done by just changing the palette.

You could use it for effects, like having it on when you pause the game or something. I can't think of any games that actually used it though.

Well... not really. Like I said all he's doing is flipping on monochrome mode, which is like a 1-byte change (depending on how the game manages itself, but most do it in a predictable fashion)

Is there such thing as color tinting (ex. green tinted B&W)

That's kind of what color emphasis is. It could probably be done along-side the monochrome change in a GG code because they're both controlled by the same register ($2001).

You'd still be stuck with only 4 shades (assuming you stay in monochrome mode) -- but they could all be tinted green or whatever instead of grey.

As for those color emphasis bits, they can create some really nice effects, I remember playing around with them with megaman V, tinting it all kinds of colors and seeing how awesome it was. it's like using a whole different pallete, pretty much. If I can find my old notes, I'd post the ram address that controlled said color emphasis, but I'm lazy . It's actually very simple.

As for the hacks, yes it does remind me alot of playing old video games on a black and white TV. It totally sucked but it was better than playing with pogs.

I still say the "proper" way to do a hack like this would be to leave it in full color mode and just change all the palettes (which sounds like what you're describing). Of course that's too big of a change for a GG code, which is probably why Rockman didn't do it that way.

Hm, so what happens if you only turn on one or two colour emphasis bits in monochrome mode?

Then instead of shades of grey, you get shades of red / green / whatever (which color depends on which colors you emphasize)

Quietust actually made a nifty Copper Bars demo which showed off a nifty effect by using tricks with monochrome mode and the emphasis bits.

Attached is a screenshot of the demo from my emu -- which is more or less how it's supposed to look. Some emus seem to choke on it due to their sub-par support of color emphasis (my version of FCEUXD chokes -- perhaps newer FCEU's work?).

Thats pretty wild, I didn't know there was a color emphasis value in the games. If I were to take this project on without that knowledge, I would have probably changed each individual pallette to a shade of "gameboy green" to resemble playing on an actual gameboy, this idea is getting more interesting I must say.

about 70-75% the intensity.

Attached is a screen I took of Megaman 4 in my emu, tweaked so that monochrome mode is always active. Left screenshot is no emphasis -- right screenshot is full emphasis (darken all colors).

Edit: Apparently the palette I was using is a little brighter than the one Rockman is using (compare my left screenshot to his MM4 screenshot)

How much darker are we talking? Considering how close to neutral that shade of grey is, it would probably help quite a bit.

Nope. Black is not available in the NES's monochrome mode. The best you could do is turn on all emphasis bits to darked the shade of grey -- but as has been said, that would darked ALL the colors, not just that darkest shade.

edit: Also, ImInvisible, why do you hate on homosexuals? <=(

Everybody stop with the damn "play with your tv settings" crap. This is a rom hacking board and that has nothing to do with rom hacking.

Anyway, I was curious if that darkest grey could be switched with black? I can't even recall what a black and white tv looked like. I can't remember if it had any blacks on it or if it was only grey like that. But I am interesting to see what it would look like that way. Otherwise good work on the codes. I posted your newest 2 on GSHI.

Ive decided to edit out my rebuttal because I realize I am one of the few adults here on this forum, and I should act it. I'm here to advance my rom hacking knowledge and to share some of the things I've created since starting this hooby, not to argue with little children. I won't perpetuate this arguement anymore as I believe it is clear to the thousands of viewers who the asshole is.

now lets continue creating and sharing in a productive and positve way.

edit: sorry if I offended anybody with the children comment as metal knuckles kindly pointed out to me on an instant message, I'm only refering to the people actually saying they want to "fucking stab me" which I thought deserved an equally vulgar response. As for all the other sig comments I found them to be funny, that thing IS truley an eyesore.

As you may have guessed I can get pretty defensive. If I am the asshole, I will try to be a reasonable asshole.

I've got a knife if you need it.

Anyway, this reminds me of when I had a black and white TV set. Playing games on that sucked, especially Dr. Mario. I have no desire to relive those days.

Hey how bout I take that knife of yours and jam it right into you and your boyfriends orbital sockets, that way you won't have to look at bigfoot again. Careful mother fuckers.

Uhoh, we gotta playa' in da house!

Seriously though, everyone stop jumping on the bandwagon and stay on topic.
