That crossed my mind as well. It could be like those thunder lakitus from Yoshi's Island. I've never used a hex editor before, but if it isn't beyond me, I would try that myself.

Yeah, me too. It's called a hex editor (or Lametaal as Smallhacker said).

I don't know of any other program or even research into something as far out as that, though I gotta admit, a lakitu chuckin' sumo lightning bolts would be kinda cool. I do not want anyone to correct me if that's something you can do just by changing the sprite number.

Hammers, Coin game Coins, Bubbles, or Wiggler's Flowers?
