It never used to do that even when I was downloading torrents, and I only have Firefox, Notepad and a DOS prompt open now.

[edit]
Well shoot, it's not a Firefox problem at all. Apparently something proxy-related is broken in Windows, or possibly I've found a Proxomitron bug. (But seeing how it's using the same settings I've been using literally for years without a problem, even the same version, I doubt this.) Proxomitron's header logging showed that Firefox makes a request, but never gets any reply. Turning Proxomitron off (having it just pass things through without modifying them) and disabling all extensions didn't help, but as soon as I disabled proxies entirely (set FF to not use one), it stopped. IE even has the same problem; works when directly connected but randomly throws 404s when using a proxy.

I'll just bet this and this are the same problem.

Does that to me when I'm downloading torrents and other stuff. I believe it's because all connections are used.

Hm, now that's *really* weird. It did it again, but it never actually showed the error page, just waited until I pressed Stop. But as long as it was trying to load a page (even when an extension made a request) I could hear a squeaking sound that seemed to be coming from my network card.

Probably the DNS cache in Windows. Type ipconfig /flushdns and see if magic happens.

Ah, no, I meant the "server not found" page. It shows up instantly, and there's no headers or anything being sent according to Proxomitron.

Unless I am mistaken, the 404 actually indicates that you have made a connection. The 404 is sent form the server itself, and basically just says, "hey, I know what you requested, but i don't have it", for one reason or another. At least AFAIK

Have you updated all your extensions? If they're not compatible with your current version or are obsolete, Firefox will disable them itself

Yeah, it's probably an extension, but I dunno how to go about finding which one. It can go days at a time without doing this, so just disabling them one at a time would be quite a pain.

A extention problem?
ISP hates you?

After anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours of use, Firefox suddenly just stops making any attempt to connect to anything. Just started doing this today, it was happening before but then stopped. It just refuses to do anything until I close it. I know it's not even trying to make a connection because it shows its own 404 page instead of Proxomitron's like it would if the site was really down. Very annoying! Just reinstalled everything like 2 days ago!
