I voted SMB3. There are several reasons for this, actually.

My first reason is its wide variety of enemies. If I'm not mistaken, it has even more enemies than Super Mario World, which is saying a lot. It had fire-breathing pirahna plants, micro goombas, jumping snakes made out of fire, and fire, sledge, and boomerang brothers, some of my favorite enemies. I even liked the bosses. Although the bosses were basicly a Koopa Kid with a wand, they still had level variations and special abilities to make them harder. And I also liked fighting Boom Boom. Basicly, it's better fighting Bowser eight times in the same frikkin' game.

Also, what's wrong with the level designs? They had a variety of layouts, many vertical levels, and you could go in and out of water in the same level. They even had P-switches and platforms moved or fell when you activated them, and some of the levels even automaticly scrolled. I didn't find that boring at all.

Also, powerups. You got the star, mushroom and flower; that's standard for Mario games, right? BUT: raccoon leaves, frogsuits, clouds, hammer suits, tanuki suits, P-wings, and more could also be acquired in mini-battles with hammer brothers, toad houses, and even in a standard level. You could even hold all of your items in the overworld for whenever you want to use them. That completely outranks all other Mario classics by a longshot!

And the bonus features - can't forget them. There was a spade game, a slot game, warp zones, and 2-player battle. SMB1 just had two warp zones.

So, there, you have my view on SMB3 vs SMB1. (SMB2 obviously loses.) As you can see, I like variety, and this has a lot. You guys can continue arguing; I'll probably just stay out of this for now.

I always favored mario2 unless we're talking about the japanese version, for some reason I liked the non-mario feel of it, and the ability to pick stuff up.

SMB3, there can be no doubt about that

That's one think I don't like about that game -- specifically Mario. He jumps too short and all, it kind of annoys me. So, I tend to use Luigi; mainly on The Lost Levels.

SMB 1 is the best. It's more challenging to control Mario when he can't bounce high off of enemies, can't pick up enemies, or fly (*cheat*cough*...well, not really).

I never liked these games on the NES. I only like SMB1 on the SNES Mario All stars with improved graphic and sounds. And you get 5 lives instead of 3, with saving option in every world.

SMB2 is not a Mario game, and I don't like it frankly. I don't know how to get through on the second level, and I'm not really interested....

SMB3 is obviously teh best of these, altough it's bit overrated. IMHO SMW is better and has more "magic". However I like many things in SMB3 (the endings, the bonus games, some of the levels, like airships, tanks etc...)

My vote goes to SMB3

SMB3: One of the most unique games I played. If SMW was a vote I would've voted for that,
because it's the easiest to hack

SMB2: I wouldn't have voted for this game because it doesn't have Bowser in it and it was just a dream.

SMB1: Too hard.

SMB3 for probably the same reasons as the others. Great level design, features, even the graphics were excellent for the NES.

I even love the remake aka Super Mario Advance 4 (All-Stars was mediocre, IMO). About the only thing disappointing in SMA4 is the addition of voices ("Just what I needed", "Mama Mia!", ugh). Oh yeah, the SMA4 remake even preserves the two player option (called "Mario & Luigi" mode; you share the same GBA or play it on the Game Boy Player for some TV action!), they should've done that for SMW: SMA2

I prefer SMB1, it was my first NES game and will always be my favorite. SMB3 comes very close but not quite.

I don't care for either one of them, none compare to Super Mario World or I wouldn't call myself the Super Mario World champion.

Sorry Anyway I might of voted for SMB2J if it was up there. I played that game for a very long time on All Stars.

Andrew, you're kinda... Using arguments that refer back to refuted arguments as proof.

Good... Job... There?

I myself am a fan of SMB...

I dunno, I guess I just played it more as a kid... And I found it ultimately more enjoyable.

The original SMB for the win!

I have to highly disagree with anyone who says SMB1s bosses are better.

Someone said that almost all of the bosses in SMB3 are the same except for different rooms.

SMB1 always had the same room but maybe a few obsticles somtimes and in worlds 1-4 bowser did nothing but blow fire and in worlds 5-8 hammers was added to his attack list. Talk about plain and repeative.
