Personally, I liked the way Penny Arcade dealt with him.
Sure, they weren't necessarily polite, but they really did do a good job of sticking it to him |

I think there's a lot of ways gamers can write him and say "you're an idiot/asshole/whatever" in a mature matter. If I wanted to, I could give him a piece of my mind that doesn't resort to insults or threats... but I'm sure others have already. Among the many death threats. |

I think you make a good point there, Colin. Intelligent rebuttals to his points are one thing, gives a sort of moral high ground. But when people respond by making ad hominem attacks and sending really rude emails and the like, it does kind of suggest that gamers aren't the best of people. At the same time, it doesn't feel great to just sit there and take it, so to speak. |

...On the flip side, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people complaining to him/sending him hate mail are giving him a pretty bad impression of gamers on a whole. |

To be honest, Shyguy, I don't know why it bothers you so much.
When I see someone with such overwhelming ignorance, stupidity, and... lost my train of thought there, but when I see someone like Jack, I see something that both reminds me of why I dislike a lot of people and gives me quite a few laughs, too. I just focus on the laughs. Try that. |

According to emails from the same email addresses, he generalizes gamers in general. It's proven. |

Wikipedia's great but don't take it as fact with statements like that. I can't recall him ever saying he hated all gamers/games, or he'd be leading a crusade against Sonic.
Maybe "he hates all violent games" would be proper. Still doesn't serve as a good defense however. |

I read on the wikipedia that he hate all gamers. Which makes him hate me by default. I don't like it when random old men hate me.
And he heartlessly said that someone who comitted suicide went straight to.... the other place. Are people like him allowed to be legal? |

The unfortunate part is, despite his questionable methods, his arguments have caught on, to some degree, in the mainstream. It reminds me of when D&D so certainly led to devil worship back in the 70s (or 60s? 80s? I dunno...). The details escape me, but some kid who played D&D murdered someone/committed suicide/did something really bad, and his mother went on a crusade against that game.
Just as role-playing games were just emerging and achieving public recognition, so are video games really reaching a new level and a new stage in modern times. Sure, there has been electronic entertainment for decades, but new technology allows for a degree of realism that's absolutely unseen before now. Give it a few years; as society at large becomes more accustomed to it, and as the older demographic becomes more familiar with it - because, of course, in a few years' time the "older demographic" will be a demographic that grew up playing these games, unlike that current segment of the population to whom video games are a foreign concept - the problem will be shifted to some new scapegoat. |

aren't recent psychology discovery proved that violent game actually make people LESS violent? as opposed to what this moron and a lot of other people say? |
Cynthia Posts: 2305/5814 |
He's against violent games which is fine, but he needs stronger points to back up his theories. Threatening people who make fun of him also isn't a smart move.
If he wouldn't be so angry and bitter and actually present well-founded points in a rational matter, then maybe I could see him as an interesting figure in the argument on violent games. As it stands now, he's nucking futs. |

What he needs to be against is stupid fucking parents and not video game companies. They're just doing their jobs and trying to make a profit.
The parents obviously arn't. |

To be fair, he's not against all video games, just violent ones. |

We hate Jack Thompson because he's an idiot.
No, seriously. Given some of his methods that he's used and claims he's made, I'm trying to figure out how he ever passed the BAR in the first place. His points are questionable at best and insane at worst. Maybe if we don't pay any attention to him, he'll go away. |

He probably got his body taken over by the soul of Fredric Wertham who decided from the afterlife to take a stab at modern fun things (in this case, video games) believing he could cause as much damage as he did while being alive. |

Well, gee, I think it's rather obvious what happened to him:

Every generation needs a scapegoat. People dislike change, so they demonize that which is new, that which is different. Worse yet, many seem to be quite xenophobic, which leads to them never understanding the very things they hate because they're too scared to try them for themselves and refuse to listen when anyone else tries to explain - something Jack's been quite guilty of in the past, from what I've read. |

Well Jack Thompson fails to see that it's not always one factor over another that increases one's tendency to become violent. Video games are hardly any more effective in that than one's life experiences, upbringing(as SS mentioned), environment, etc. But I do think kids should be more aware of real violence. It's far uglier than what we see in movies, games, etc. |

I know it's been said a million times before, and I'm hardly an innovator for bringing it up again, but it is the parent who is responsible for the development of his child. A video game with certain content can certainly have an effect on the psyche of a youth, but any person of reasonable maturity and reasonable intelligence can lose nothing by enjoying electronic entertainment.
There is no relationship between a maladapted child and that child's enjoyment of video games, but there is definitely a correlation between that maladapted child and his parents' poor work at raising their offspring. The second should not be mistaken for the first. |
