You can get some nice backgrounds and maybe foregrounds from these games:
Crash Dummies
Tom & Jerry
Killer Instinct
Tetris Attack
Super Mario All Stars + World (I couldn't resist)
Yoshi's Island (Haven't seen backgrounds used from that game)
Uhh...yeah...that's all I can think of, but those should make pretty awesome backgrounds.

EDIT: Oh crap...I should've read the dates.

Damn all games on SNES (for ripping backgrounds, that is...)
Good ways to get very good backgrounds:
1. The original Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
2. Vectorman, Vectorman 2 (Genesis)
3. Sonic 1, 2, and 3 (Genesis)
4. Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 (SNES)
5. Maybe the Lion King (SNES)....
6. MAKE IT YOURSELF!!!!!

DKC2 might be overused, but then again I still don't see much hacks with their GFX. But only use DKC2 GFX if you want a more realistic look, as opposed to a fantasy-anime look.

I would like to see a SMW hack with SM64 gfx...

Also a little list:
KDL3 - but it would be hard to make the fg work correctly...
Super metroid - Same as KDL3
Earthworm Jim - BGs
Gradius - FGs

And i can't think of another ones right now...

Why only think of SNES game move on to other platforms as well. I've taken backrounds from Sonic the Hedgehog and they look damn good. Sometimes the contrast is a little screwed up but mostly good.

I don't really think any non-mario games can be effectively ripped from without major overhauls of everything... The contrasts are just too great.

How about these:

the Donkey Kong Country series - Most BGs are good here but FGs are hard to rip, however, some are rippable
Yogi Bear - All I've seen except for the construction site
The Lion King - Almost all BGs here and some FGs
Jurassic Park 2 - the final mission
Knights of the Round - level 2 and a few others, not good for FGs
King of dragons - Good for BGs but not FGs
Legend - Good for BGs but not FGs
Sutte Hakkun - not very good FGs, awesome BGs but it only has 3 BGs
the Mortal Kombat series - Good for BGs but not that good for FGs

Just play obscure games nobody's ever heard of, you'll find some nice grapics. (Especially on SNES.)

The SNES version of Prince of Persia is pretty, not unlike a pony.

Here's some ideas for ripping ExGFX...

1. Go Go Ackman series (they're 3 games that never came out in the US).

2. Super Adventure Island.

3. Donald Duck - Maui Mallard.

4. Ganbare Goemon series (Another series that never made it to the US).

5. Actraiser 1 (like asdf said) or 2.

6. Rocky Rodent.

7. The Advenutures of Batman & Robin.

8. Sky Blazer

9. Super Valis IV

10. Cybernator

I don't know if it's possible to rip gfx from these games to put into SmW since I only hacked SmW for a little bit. I hope these ideas can help you out.

Since you may not be familiar with Robotrek, Check out the image below. Those trees would look great in a custom overworld.

I was just checking out some more game screens. Beauty and the Beast has some nice castle GFX, and Aladdin's good if you want an Arabian theme.

In the past I've enjoyed moderate success ripping from Jelly Boy. Let me see if I can find the old page I put together for the graphics I was ripping from it.

EDIT: Here we go

You can actually see a lot of inspiration was drawn from this graphic style for my own unique stuff.

Ahhh...yes. One of my biggest weaknesses: not being able to find games to rip ExGFX from. Some good ones I know of though are: Sonic 1 (Game Gear/Mega Drive version), Sonic games in general, Actraiser and Super Metroid. Yeah...I'm pathetic, I know.

Last night, I was looking at screenshots from non-Mario SNES games that I doubt anyone has ever thought of ripping ExGFX from. I personally don't know anything about ripping GFX, but I think I can offer some suggestions.

Bust-A-Move has some really nice backgrounds. I really like the forest and stained-glass ones.

Robotrek may be an RPG, but the graphics there could be used for the overworld, and the backgrounds used during battles (particularly the one in the Volcano Cave) would look good in a level. Anyone else have some suggestions?

Note: This is NOT an ExGFX request.
