Barry Zito re-signed with the A's Giants.

NOW IS THE TIME ON SPROCKETS WHEN WE DANCE LAUGH AT STEVE PHILLIPS

He insisted the Red Sox wouldn't sign Matsuzaka, and would instead go after Clemens.

Anyway, if he can be as successful here as he was with Seibu, they'll be in the playoffs for years... with sexy results.

Fucking Boras, he's a real turd. He held out, probably against D-Mat's wishes, for aprox. .75 mil more a year.

Surprising, and relieving as a Sawx fan. Funny, 'cuz ol' Skip Bayless was predicting that Boras was just taking it down to the wire to try and suck a few more pennies out of Theo, and it looks like he was right about the last minute part (reported 6 year, 50 million dollar deal?).

So who else wants to punch Scott Boras in the junk? Daisuke, I beg of you, tell your agent to calm down and compromise just this once.

(For ones who do not possess the Triforce haven't seen, the Red Sox are offering him 4-5 years, around $7-8M/year. Boras wants $15M/year, thinking Matsuzaka should get paid like a top-of-the-line free agent. Despite the fact that he can only negotiate with the Red Sox.)

Well, now the Cubs ARE in business, signing Ted Lilly, and reportedly inking a deal with Jason Marquis. And the LA Dodgers are proud to welcome Jason Schmidt and Luis Gonzalez. And Andy Pettitle is a Yankee again.

In other news, Jose Uribe (1959-2006)

Now if Soriano could pitch, the Cubs would be in business. But... he can't. Anyhow, chances of Man-Ram being traded to the rumored Giants? Very small, as he has all the leverage with a no-trade clause. Either way, it's stupid to trade a guy who pretty much set up David Ortiz to have back to back MVP seasons. Ortiz needs the lineup protection from one of the best pure hitters in baseball to be successful.

So we've got a trade on our hands. One I don't get, but... oookay.

To SD: minor-league 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff, P Andrew Brown
To CLE: 2B Josh Barfield

I guess the idea is to make room for Marcus Giles in San Diego. Uhm... 'kay. And the Pads hired Bud Black away from the The Angels Angels of Santa Ana-Home, replacing Bruce Bochy. Suck it Trebek Dusty Baker.

As for the new thread title, people are a-postin'. Obviously, the big name is Daisuke Matsuzaka, expected to fetch up to $30 million in posting fees alone (reminder: this is just for the right to sign him to a contract... probably not unlike transfer fees in soccer, yes?). Everybody wants him. So I've sent out my spies, and even though they don't announce it until tomorrow at the earliest, looks like the winners could be the New Y--wait, what? The Diamondbacks? The ones who're based in Arizona? Noooooooo. Really? For reals? (Editor's note: This might not be news if it turns out it's just referring to the Diamondbacks bidding on him, not winning him.)

Also, the Pads appear to be the favorites (or at least the logical winner) for Akinori Iwamura, a 3B who's being posted. Didn't they just get a 3B, you ask? Well, Iwamura can play SS, 2B, and CF if need be, so if they really want to hold on Linebrink (that's the rumors on the Internets, that San Diego would send him to tha ATL for Giles). They're also chasing Kei Igawa, a pitcher who went 20-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 2003. Millwood much?

So Holiday Inn is sponsoring something called the Look Again Award, ostensibly rewarding a player who quietly goes about their business, helping their team win without much recognition.

The current runaway leader for either league? Cast a vote and you'll see that it's Mr. Overlooked himself, David Eckstein.

Wait, what's that you say? Eckstein has had article after article praising his heart, his determination, despite his lack of size?

Oh, what else is that? He's the goddamn Batman World Series MVP?

Oh. Oh.

OOOOOOOH.

I hate people sometimes.

Should've been the Mets

I guess the final toll was only 2 dead, Lidle and the instructor. Apparently the reason more lives weren't lost is that the woman in the apartment that was struck was in another room at the time. Additionally, it was a small plane Lidle was flying in; the actual destructive capacity of such a plane is relatively limited (I recall some copycat attack in Miami sometime over the last five years using such a plane; a witness said there was a small "pop" and that was pretty much it).

Even thinking about it now, though, it's bizarre that it happened at all.

Not tonight, they've been rained out. I'd imagine at Game 2 of the ALCS they might, especially the NLCS.

I'd also heard four all over the place, but I think they just said it was two in the ESPN article (quoting Bloomberg).

I keep hearing 4 people dead but you probably won't know for sure for a while. Depends if anyone was in the apartments that were hit, because that could knock the death toll up.

I'd assume they would do a moment of silence in New York tonight even though it's the Mets, no?

Mayor Bloomberg has stated that only 2 are dead now, Lidle and his instructor (even though they won't say it's Lidle until family are contacted). Surprising, a crash like that would usually have caused a lot more damage to human life and to the building as well in my opinion. It's actually a lot of luck that only those two died (although it's interesting to wonder why Lidle was flying around Manhattan ).
