Yes, it's safe to format it.
I once had a similar problem with my Sandisk 1GB Memory Stick Duo in my PSP. While writing to it, it crashed and many files corrupted: my only remedy was to transfer those files OK to my computer, reformat the MS and transfer back. |

it could also be the case that the drive has reached the end of its life. After writing to the drive enough times, the drive will eventually be rendered useless and whatever you wrote in there is in the permanently.
so, depending on the age, what I just said may be the case. As for formatting the drive, I don't see the harm in it, but if you have limited writing capability due to "natural wear", it may just kill the drive... |

Before I try something drastic, is it safe to format the drive? I'm just worried it will make it useless. |

Have you been properly ejecting the disk for the operating system to finish write operations?
Check the filesystem on it Windows: chkdsk /f <DriveLetter>: Unix-like: fsck /dev/<devicename> |

Sounds like the filesystem on the flash drive has become corrupted, or the flash memory has a defect and is failing. Or it could be dirty connectors on the thumb drive causing slight problems. Try backing up the data on it, formatting it, then putting the stuff back on. If you still experiance problems, check if the pins are dirty and use rubbing alchohol and a q-tip to clean anything off them. |

Not really, but I'd try putting all your existing data on there onto a Hard Disk temporarily (backup) and reformatting the drive. See if it makes any difference / improvement. |

I have a SanDisk 1GB Flash Drive, which has been causing me some trouble as of late. The drive will not recognize new items put on it (though the original items still work), and then some of the items there have mysteriously vanished while one (rather large) folder has been turned into a file, the files within it vanished. This is a problem, as one might guess... any body know how to fix it? |
