Heh, I was just going to suggest Breaking The Law by Judas Priest.
Black Diamond by Stratovarius would be nice to hear. So would Axenstar with Blind Bleeding the Blind. I´ll add more to this if I come up with something. Both goes under Speed Metal, I think. |

ALl of In Flames sounds the same? I find that all of their albums are very unique.
If you don't have Clayman, you don't know In Flames best work |

Originally posted by mattp I do listen to them, well not Mnemic, everything form them sounds the same, but CoB have my top slot. But still Trivium do have a couple good things, and their next is supposed to be better and different, like more singing and bass solos |

They are commercialized, packaged-and-sold metal. They basically take sound that was huge in Europe a couple years ago and sell it in the US.
To hear really good music in the same vein, listen to In Flames, Soilwork, Children of Bodom, Mnemic, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, etc. |

I know covers won't show off our power as songwriters, but they are good for recognition. People recognize and remember that we played well, whether or not it was our song. Once our own stuff gets more popular we probably won't be playing covers.
Thanks for all the suggestions though. I presented most of what you asked for and my bandmates were not impressed, so we went with Only for the Weak by In Flames and Breaking the Law by Judas Priest. And... why would I ever want to cover an Avenged Sevenfold or a Trivium song? they're so bland and generic. |

I would also agree with the general populous that covers aren't the best way to go. HOWEVER, they can get a crowd going if they really like a particular song. They will sing along and be energized from it. Sure, it doesn't show your skill as a band writing their own music, but it's good to have a cover or two to pull out once in awhile.
Here are my suggestions for a cover: With a good keyboardist: 1) "The Accolade" by Symphony X 2) "Rivfader" by Fintroll (lol! erm... if the singer can sing like that) 3) "Bird of ill Omen" by Kalmah [If you don't want to sing and still have a cover:] a) "Salieri Strikes Back" by Warmen (A side project of Children of Bodom) b) "Stratofortress" by Stratovarius Without a keyboardist: 1) "Bat Country" by Avenged Sevenfold 2) "Master of Puppets" by Metallica [To Captain Subtext: Run to the Hills by Avantasia?] |

1.Death Certificate by Carcass (seems to fit with your style(s)
2. Angel of Death by Slayer (Standard Trash) 3. Crown of Horns by Cryptopsy (probably my favorite Death track) 4.YYZ by Rush (Love to see that covered without suckiness) Why not also perform the easiest cover ever?: You suffer by Napalm Death. |
