Considering how cheap space is, and probably how little that would be stored about your charcther. (It's pretty much your level, skills, and items you have) So I doubt they start to delete charcthers becuse of space issues.

Most that I've seen will only guarantee characters for a set period of time, but will in reality preserve them forever. People have dropped EverQuest then picked it back up years later to find their old characters still around. Again, each is only guaranteed to be there for x months, but that's not a reflection on the true situation.

I love 'em. Many people don't. It really depends on any number of things.

As to whether or not the games are pay-to-play or not, that depends directly on the financial standing of the company. Blizzard can almost always be assured of making BOATLOADS of money from selling games, and as such can afford to eat the money for the servers, typically. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they're almost all connected, so... yeah. WoW was an exception, of course.

I think leveling in Guild Wars is done in an offline world separate from the PvP one, which may be a factor to avoiding monthly fees.

Few, if any, online games will delete a character if a person has cancelled his account. I know that EverQuest guarantees that a player's characters will remain for a set amount of time, after which no such guarantee is made, but all reports confirm that even a person who's been absent for years can reactivate his acount and play from where he left off. If you find you'll be on hiatus, either for logistical reasons (no access to an Internet connection, etc) or simply due to boredom, you can stop paying without fear of losing all that time.

Well, you could always cancel your account.

I played WoW a bit back in July, then I got busy, so I just cancelled my account, I started playing again a little while ago right where I left off

Well, there's free MMORPG's out there. I saw a new one recently which had similar art-style as RO but was fully in 3D and seemed to have a GM staff that was coherent in English.

Another sort of free game is Second life, which you have to still use a credit card, but only as a age-verification thing apparently. It's one of the few MMO's that openly allows players to trade stuff for real money. Though it's not really a game, more like a giant 3D chat thing.

Because we all know the typical Counter Strike player is far more mature than the average D&Der.

In the case of EverQuest, which I've been playing and paying for for the past six and a half years, not only do servers need to be maintained - as has been mentioned - but the game is patched with new content, as well as revisions and corrections of old content, every few weeks. You think the programmers and artists responsible for such changes, as well as the game masters (which, in this case, are something like ingame customer service reps), game designers, people responsible for the servers and other hardware, and multitude of others are all contributing to the game out of some idealistic motive?

If you don't want to shell out less than fifteen bucks a month to play, that's perfectly fine. But if you realize that you'll spend more than that monthly fee if you go to pay for a movie ticket and a bit of food - which will only amount to a couple hours of entertainment at most - you realize that $15 is rather cheap for a month subscription. Get a minimum wage job and work for a week, and all of a sudden you can afford a year of EverQuest or most other MMORPGs on the market. The game itself, including all but one of the ~10 expansions that have been released, is $20 - they make their profit on the monthly fee.

Guildwars doesn't really add much new content through patches, they do it with frequent(looks like it's yearly?) expansion packs(or "Chapters") priced at $50. However, it's a stand alone game, you don't need Guildwars1 to play Guildwars Factions.

Once they release a new chapter, they no longer touch the old one

1) Maintenance & upkeep on existing servers
2) Purchase of new servers to serve growing player numbers
3) Because people will pay it.

FIrst, this actually goes in Online Gaming, because last I checked only online games are pay-to-play.

Second, I entirely disagree; I won't pay for an online game myself, but I understand why some games ARE pay-to-play. There's a lot of expenses they have to cover.

WoW, I can understand.

I mean Blizzard has to pay for all their servers (not just WoW). And they still have servers for games that don't get them money anymore.

Because there are still massive maintenance fees. I guess Guildwars has some sort of alternative mode of funding. The other ones are far smaller then say EQ or WoW

The upkeep and needs of those games are pretty pricey. So it makes sense that they are Pay to Play. If you don't like it, don't play it. I don't.

edit:: this is also the wrong forum for this kinda stuff. I'm bumping this sad, sad kitten over to General Gaming where it belongs.
