yeah...although im pretty sure the person im getting the server from has red hat, since ive heard him say thats what hes used, or uses, maybe I can get it from him, or ill either use Ubuntu, or even Fedora.

Edit: Well I got it last night, and installed Fedora Core 4 on it, it has 2 550mhz processors, 256MB Ram, and 11GB of free space, time to mess around with it

Ya, Ubuntu is Debian based and BSDs are very secure. Dunno how Red Hat costs though.
Well, comming from DistroWatch, the price vary between 180 $ and 2500 $ US.

I was either thinking Red Hat, Ubuntu, or FreeBSD, in that order of what I want more. it will probably be Red Hat.

Well, I know that Debian, Red Hat, BSDs are nice for servers.

Im getting an older Compaq Proliant server from my step dads boss later on today, or if not, sometime this week, all I know about it is that it has smart array RAID 3x9GB SCSI drives...ill get the other specs later.

what im wondering is a couple things.

What Linux or unix distro should I put on the thing?
and
What do you think I should use it for?

the guy said its a good linux/bsd hacking box, although im not really into hacking, so that probably wont happen...and I dont really have enough bandwidth or transfer to use it as a webserver, since I have a Cable internet connection and only around 10GB of upload per month.

so im just thinking ill either install a linux distro, and mess around with linux or unix, and also open it up and take a look at the hardware, or use it as a dev machine, always wanted to try development on linux.
