Jack watched Jared walk off into the distance, and then dropped his gaze to the ground, observing the details of the concrete while he thought. There went his only friend as well... aside from the death sprite, of course. The thought of returning to his dreary afterlife disheartened him, but he had work that had to be done. Something was going on in the land of the dead, and he didn't like it. Maybe he'd even risk a visit soon.

Atrats: "Hey Jacks, d'j'you die again? Fine, stand there all night, I'm goin'!

Jack: "Huh? Oh... right. Let's get out of here."

Still solemnly staring at the road, he and Atrats were surrounded by a wispy black smoke cloud that rose out of the ground, and were gone when it cleared a moment later.

The End

Yes, incredibly fun indeed. Ahhh, you RP so well! I was jealous at some parts
I'm not gonna let this be the last of our encounters. We'll have more at TS, or possibly here again ; )

Despite the cool night air that circled around them, Jared managed a warm smile. The liquid silver of the moon flowed down from oblivion, causing his white skin to radiate brightly also.

"Halloween Town, eh? That sounds like fun! Hope the Netherworld returns to its..er...normal state soon and you are able to finally find your friend."

He extended his hand, returning Jack's gesture kindly with his smile still in place. That is, until Atrats was overcome by a shower of tears using him as something of a tissue. Even then he couldn't help but smile reassuringly and pat the lil' sprite on the back.

"Don't worry, It's been too much fun today to forget you two characters, no doubt we'll find eachother again someday. Ta-ta!"

He gave them a two-finger salute and turned around to leave. Atrats's mention of food reminded him of his first intention: shopping. Before heading home, he stopped by the gas station store wth the flickering neon-light that read, 'Open', for a sandwich and a Mountain Dew.

Jack shortly followed Jared with a leap out of the hole, and Atrats buzzed close behind him. He squinted slightly under the light of the moon, which reflected brightly off of his pale skin.

Jack: "I'll take some time to rest first. I really need it. And, I've been itching to visit Halloween Town for a while... besides, something must be going on in the Netherworld if there's so many monsters abroad, so it's not safe to go scoping again any time soon. But I will continue shortly. That really is my only purpose now... ...finding her lost soul."

Atrats quivered at Jack's melancholy.

Atrats: "...Yeah, and I'm hung-y. I'se only had rat carcasses these past few days. Gruesome shtuff. Pehhhhhhhhh!"

Jack held out his thin, stitched hand to Jared for a shake and smiled faintly.

Jack: "Time for us to go. Hey, if Life ever gets too mundane for you, just give a call. I'll hear you."

Atrats cracked. Overwhelmed by the sadness of parting, he burst into oily tears and sobbed like a maniac all over Jared.

Atrats: "Bye Jared! We miss you! Uh boo hoo hoohhhh! Bye - bye... sob..."

It gave him some sick satisfaction, watching the darkness spread over the brain like a plague. Perhaps because he knew that all of it was over now. Seeing the mucus bubble grotesquely seemed to bring everything to a close. Jack’s voice brought his mind back to reality and reminded him of the portal.

Seeing the snake try and fight through the portal made his world come crashing down. Although it looked really cool, he had done enough fighting for the day and couldn’t say that he wanted to do anymore. He let out a sigh of relief as he saw it’s vicious face disappear, along with the portal. It was finally over.

Looking himself over, the damage wasn’t half bad. He hadn’t taken too bad of a beating, considering the monsters came out worse in the end. More than anything, he was tired and longed to go home, after getting something to eat. Once again, he was seized from his day-dreaming by the shrill voice of the sprite, Atrats. Rather than causing his blood to boil, the lil’ cretin seemed to add a spectrum of fun and excitement to the hell they had just endured. Even though he hadn’t done much, he had still helped in his own, miniscule ways. He let a small smile creep its way over his face and rolled his eyes as Atrats boasted of his abilities.

Atrats’s inquiry brought his thoughts back to the state they had been in before: home. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he had gotten attached to the lil’ bugger, or could at least tolerate him anyway. As for Jack, it pleased him to think that he had acquired a friend, as they were in very, very short supply, Jack being the only one. Returning his sword to its sheathe, he looked at Atrats who was swarming around his head.

Well, seeing as how I don’t live in the sewers…I won’t be staying here. I’ll probably grab some food and head home. But don’t worry…” he flicked Atrats in the nose, “You haven’t seen the last of me…but could we continue this above ground? The lovely aroma of the sewer is finally starting to bother me.” Looking over his shoulder, he noticed he still had his wings. If the humans in the city saw that they would have a fit and it would be even harder for him to try and fit in with the crowd. Stretching them out fully, they slowly began to sink into his back as if they were going through a portal. The sound of bones crunching and readjusting echoed through the tunnels as it had done when he grew them, until the only thing left to betray their presence were the two holes in the back of his jacket. With that, he jumped back up through the hole he had fallen through and landed next to the sidewalk. How long had they been down there? The sky was pitch black and not a person was in sight on the streets.

After cracking his neck, he turned to Jack and chuckled. “Thanks, you’re not as bad as the rest of the…not-living. What about you two? Will you continue your search for your friend?

Jack held onto his dagger atop the thrashing beast as if it were the reins to a distempered horse, while the deadly black ball in his hand grew to an amazing size. Hearing Jared cheer him on, he looked back, raised his eyebrows, and fired the ball directly into the top of the brain. Immediately, it stopped its flaying as the shadows covered its body, filling the intricate folds in its tissue and then eating through to the core. Jack jumped down to study the damage from below.

In a few moments, the entire thing was disintegrated, leaving behind only a puddle of gray mucus.

Jack: "Ehum. I've had so much fun today I think I might choke. ...I'll close the portal - "

Jack motioned at the green ring around them, meaning to dispel it (the power ring too), but before he could, the face of a hideous black and white snake burst out and roared angrily.

Jack: "Sandworm! Awwwww!!! No you don't!!! Get in there!"

Hurriedly, he waved his hand and the ring shrunk into a little vortex, pulling the sandworm back inside and disappearing with a squeak. Jack let out a relieved sigh. Finally, the monsters were gone for good.

Now that the danger was out of the way, he could realize just how bad of a beating he had taken. He grinned at the pain that he felt throbbing all over, where he'd been cut and bruised, and covered in all sorts of slime and blood.

Atrats snapped out of his lunacy to make the pain all the worse.

Atrats: "Whoh - ow - oh! Didja seeit? Didjaseeit? That brain! It was spittin' niarbs!"

He teleported to Jack's side in a puff of intoxicating smoke.

Atrats: "Good thing buddy 'ol Jared was here to save our skins! But I'da beatin' that monster in fi' seconds if I di'un have this dreadful pain in my poor little wingy... boo..."

The death sprite feebly wiggled its shriveled bat wing before an irritated Jack. He was better unconscious... Atrats pretended to snap to attention, being fully aware of his annoying behavior to start.

Atrats: "Oh wait, that's where you hit me, dearest friend Jack. Pbthpbthpbthpbth!"

Not giving anyone a chance to speak, he floated fast circles up around Jared, staring at him with theatrical sadness.

Atrats: "What will become of Jared now, I wonders? Is he gonna go now? Boo..."

Jack: "Well, I'm sure he won't be sticking around here. If he's anything as smart as he seems, he'd get away before Atrats could get too attached to him."

Jack gave a small smile, then stood up from a fallen stone and stretched.

Jack: "Where will you go, Jared? Pain to think we shouldn't meet again. You're not as bad as the rest of the living."

Jack's gaze veered off blankly to the side as it often did. He wouldn't be staying for any more soul scoping in the sewer with those monsters roaming around. Besides, the days and nights down there had tired him out... he longed to get some air again, see the moon.

It took a moment for Jack to snap out of his Daze, but Jared was relieved when he finally did. Hopefully the Insane wouldn’t find a way to pry into his mind as well.

If you say so…Let’s finish this pathetic thing.

There were only two left, so it shouldn’t prove to be too difficult. Jack had already leapt into action and succeeded in wounding a third tentacle, leaving the last one to him. Looking more like a wagging tail now than a menacing arm, the remaining healthy tentacle flailed about aimlessly, revealing the obvious pain of the beast from the loss of its other appendages. Running up to it, he rose his sword above his head and jumped over the tentacle as it swept under his feet like a giant jump rope, and succeeded in planting his sword into the muscular flesh. The angered arm rose high into the air, leaving Jared to watch his weapon be carried away, though not in vain. The area where the sword was stuck began to turn black, and the darkness quickly spread over the rest of the arm in vine-like trails. After only a few seconds, the tentacle began to wither, the outer layer of its skin peeled off revealing the disgusting innards with soon faded to black as well. The darkness stopped at the place where the tentacle met the brain as it dropped from the body, smoldering, to the floor.

His sword now lay on the floor beside the decaying remains of flesh, the brilliant purplish black glow on the blade beginning to face. Picking up his weapon, he was rather pleased. After all, what could the brain do by itself without the tentacles to thrash them around? As long as he and Jack kept their minds closed, killing this sucker shouldn’t be too far into the future. Looking up, he saw Jack was atop the monstrous brain, with his dagger jammed into the lobes as he charged dark energy in his right hand. Yes, the end was so near now, he could almost taste it.

Yesss…Finish it, Jack.

Jack's unfocused gaze became alert, and he realized that he had been absently staring at Jared. Slightly confused, he shook it off.

Jack: "Eh, it's nothing. Let's try to get the rest of the tentacles off!"

The Insane was already making it hard for Jack to focus, but he wouldn't be rendered senseless like Atrats had just yet. With a new burst of energy, Jack ran ahead and made a high, flipping jump to grab onto a pipe, and then swung himself up and landed balancing perilously above the brain. The monster used one of its two remaining tentacles to grab up onto the pipe, and Jack saw that it was about to rip it from beneath him. Quickly, he dashed forward and stepped onto the tentacle, using its mucus to slide down the length like a disgusting flesh slide. Careful not to pass up the opportunity to make his opponent suffer, Jack dragged his dagger behind him as he slipped down, drawing a wet red gash behind him the whole way. He finally neared the end of the ride, and leapt from the tentacle so that instead of crashing against the brain's side he landed on its top, using the force of the fall to shove his dagger into it.

So far, so good. He had a safe position on top of the Insane (which was partly on top of the power ring he created), and the tentacle he sliced was now only making limp movements. Bending forward on one knee to grasp onto the embedded dagger, Jack held his other arm up and charged some shadows to his hand for another Dark Ball technique.

Jack: "Stupid beast. You'll be afraid of the dark after this..."

As the smoke enveloped the three of them, Jared caught glances of cool looking skulls floating about in the gloom. He couldn’t help but grin at the brilliant idea, and hoped he could contribute something as useful to the battle with the Insane. A newfound power seemed to course through his veins, which was soon explained by Jack and caused his grin to spread even wider. Looking like a deranged Cheshire cat, he was beginning to think that they might actually stand a chance now.

Nodding to Jack he turned his attention back to the brain. There was no way he would leave this circle if he could help it. He began formulating a battle strategy when out of nowhere, Atrats collided with him and fell to the ground. It was hard not to feel at least a smidgeon of pity for the sprite, despite how annoying he had been earlier. Watching Atrats disappear, he wondered if it would have really been so bad for him to stick around and help with the fight. After all, he had held his own against the bat creatures. Shaking his head sadly, he dismissed the thought from his mind and leered up at the brain.

Seeing that Jack was wasting no time, he decided to follow his example and inflict some major damage to this brain-monster. Although he had never fought one before, let alone even seen an Insane, he knew they were not indestructible as he has already wounded one of the tentacles. Raising his sword, it became ignited once again, though the flame seemed to glow a bit brighter than before. Charging towards the already marked tentacle, he jumped over another one that came shooting towards him, which Jack soon managed to rip straight through. Using this tentacle as a sort of stair, he jumped off of it towards his goal, doing a dodge in mid-air as it shot at him and bringing his sword down to severe it clear off. The writhing appendage fell to the floor and flopped around a bit before becoming totally lifeless. The stump that remained was steaming, filling the chamber with the echoey ‘hissss’ sound, but it did not bleed. Jared’s blade had cauterized the wound leaving it callous and clean.

The Insane had only two tentacles left now as Jack had summoned a fleet of spiders to discard of the first. What remained of the beast flailed about madly, its remaining limbs waved about in a fit of hysteria and slammed against the walls of the sewer. He dodge-rolled to the side as one bolted towards him attempting to crush him against the wall. In his opinion, they weren’t doing too badly and the Insane should be dead in no time. Turning to look at Jack to see if he could read similar thoughts in his expression, he noticed something different about him. Could the beast be taking him over? That surely wouldn’t be good for the fight as he imagined Jack suddenly turning on him and managing to kill him fighting alongside the Insane. Forcing the gnarly imagery from his mind, he shouted over to Jack. “Everything okay over there? Don’t be freaking out on me now…we’ve almost got ‘im!!

Suddenly, black smoke seeped from the ground and rapidly closed a second circle around Jared, Atrats, and Jack. The smoke continued flowing in its place after the ring was completed, forming little skull shapes with the wisps that faded into the air.

Jack: "Stay in this ring if you can, Jared! Your fighting ability will be increased while you're inside."

Jack already felt much stronger, and was sure Jared felt the same.

The brain inched closer, now planning to cover the ring with its bulk and force the fighters out. Fully realizing the terror of the Insane, Atrats broke down and sobbed hysterically on Jack's shoulder, spilling disgusting ink everywhere.

Atrats: "It's hopeless! We're finished! We're gonna diiieeee!!! Jack, I don't want to die! It sounds smelly! Uh boo hoo hoo!"

Jack shoved him away, and he spiraled into Jared. The impact knocked Atrats' light frame to the ground, where he sobbed into his own puddle of inky tears.

Jack: "His simple mind was spoiled so soon! Pah, could've guessed."

Jack leapt over Atrats and to the base of one of the tentacles. As it smashed down, Jack slid underneath it to its other side and then sharply changed course with another quick jump back when it hit the ground. As he flew through the air, making an arc over the tentacle, he made a series of lightning-quick slashes along its surface. The Insane reacted by sliding its tentacle across the floor and straight at Jack, but he dashed forward without a trace of fear and, holding his blue-glowing dagger in front of him, burst a hole right through the tentacle and emerged on the other side. Jack landed on his feet unharmed, but covered with cerebral slime. Jack glanced at his hand mischievously, which was lacking the dagger - he had left it in the hole in the tentacle! The Insane moved its appendage in pain as thousands of spiders emerged from the hilt of the blade, just as bats had earlier, and in a few seconds ate the damaged tentacle right off of the body. Jack held out his arm and his knife flew back into his hand, leaving the spiders to wander off into the sewer.

Well, one tentacle severed and another injured. Jack had dealt with Insanes before in the Netherworld, although he had always had his trusty scythe handy and a non-corporeal form, which made it easier. They were doing okay for the time, but he knew that these monsters only became worse as time passed...

The brain pulsated faster and faster, and still tried to smite the fighters with its tentacles. Though Jack had done his best to close his mind, he was beginning to feel himself slipping into Insanity...

((Thanks, so does Jack XP))

--------

After killing the last of the bat creatures, he looked over to Jack to find that his ogre beast was going berserk! It seemed to be terrified of something, though Jared noticed nothing diferent about the dank sewers. It must have been another of Jack's tricks. He couldn't help but smile as he tanuted the beast before slashing it to pieces, its dead skin falling pathetically to the ground before it was forced back through the portal. Jack's battle tactics never ceased to amaze him as he then watched him sap the life from one of the bats as it snapped at him inches away from his face.

"Nice job, Jack!"

Turning to Jack, it seemed that he and Atrats had finished their mini duels. Finally! Maybe now Jack ould close the portal before any more inconvieniences could squeeze their way through. He became so confident that he began to wonder what he would do when all of this was over. Perhaps he would finally go to the store and pick up some food. His thoughts were cut short by the sound of something grotesque slamming into the ground. The sound of Jack's distressed voice caused his stomach to churn uncomfortably. For him to sound that disturbed, it must be pretty bad. Reluctantly, he turned towards the portal to see a giant tentacle, followed by three more like it and what appeared to be a giant...was that a brain?

"An Insane?" He didn't like the sound of that at all. As Jack instructed, he closed off all routes to his intricate mind so that the Insane wouldn't have access to his thoughts. As Jack sliced his arm, Jared felt some solace as he knew the result would not be something pretty for the brain monster. He couldn't help but smirk, but that expression was quickly robbed from his face as a tentacle shot straight at him. Rolling to the side, he made a slice in it before it recoiled back towards to brain, some form of blood oozing from the tentacle as he looked worriedly to Jack, waiting for him to pull some more tricks from his sleeve.

Jared kicks ass XD
---

Jack, from his position on the ground, glanced over toward Jared. He was doing excellent. Even putting Jack to shame, really. Jack looked back upward, where the ogre was looming and ominously raising its axe, aiming for a clean blow to the neck. That familiar wicked look found itself on Jack's face once more as he raised him palm toward the ogre's head.

Jack: "What does a rhino-beast fear, I wonder?"

The ogre brought the axe down just as a white mist was shot from Jack's palm. With a sniff, the brute recoiled, and dropped the axe off to the side - it would have severed Jack's legs if he hadn't rolled back to his feet. The ogre, now utterly confused from the chemical, staggered around and stared at its surroundings with scared, wide eyes, and let out a terrified roar.

Jack: "Hah-HAH! Cry, you disgusting thing! Rar!"

Jack waved his arms around, badly imitating some kind of monster, and the ogre withdrew, stepping closer to the edge of the ring. Jack leapt at it and made a flurry of lightning-quick slashes with his dagger, tearing shreds to the ogre's rotted skin, and the thing was knocked back through the green portal. Jack brushed some bits of skin off of his coat and turned around.

He remembered the bats as one of them dived into his face and knocked him back. Turning around sharply, he tossed his dagger, which homed in on the demon as it flew around and stuck it in the back. The bat dropped into the channel and lived no more.

The second bat flew in at Jack right afterward, but Jack caught its wings in each hand just before it latched onto his face. The monster bit and snapped wildly, trying to close its enormous fangs on the head just inches out of its reach, and Jack recoiled in disgust. But the bat slowed to a stop, and let out a terrified squeal before it suddenly died... Jack dropped it to the stone floor, having just sucked the life out of it with a vampiric touch.

That finished, Jack looked around at Jared, who had finished off his fiends, and Atrats, who was floating above an inky pile on the floor that he assumed were the bats. Now if he could just close the portal…

Jack ran to the edge of the ring and prepared to dispel it, but he was interrupted by an enormous twenty-foot flesh tentacle that shot out and slammed the ground just feet from him. Close one there…

Jack: “N – no… it can’t be!”

The tentacle scrunched up as it pulled a tremendous weight from the other side of the portal. A second shot out on the other side of Jack, laboring to move whatever body it belonged to. Jack staggered backward toward the center of the ring, making way for the largest demon yet…

It appeared to be a giant brain, perhaps as large as a house, oozing with slime and with four tentacles total. The tentacles smashed around the room blindly as the brain jiggled…

Jack: “We’ve just gained the unpleasant company of an Insane. Close your mind, if you can, so it doesn’t drive you to madness. And watch out for the tentacles, of course.”

There was a flash of blue mist in Jack's hand, from which his dagger materialized. With this he made another cut on his right arm.

Jack: “We’ll need a little help for this…”

You can have control of the Insane to some extent, just don’t kill it off yet. It’s got some nifty tricks to show off, first.

Why had the briars disappeared? Though it was not made obvious by his current expression, Jared was becoming a bit worried. Their only form of a shield had just vanished back into the concrete, and his fire had died with it.The absence of the spider-beasts didn’t even phase him, he was busy concentrating on what was making its way through the portal. His heart sank down into his stomach as he could practically feel the power of the new challenge coursing throughout the sewers. This would prove to be much more difficult than those spiders had been.

Emerald eyes grew wide with terror as the next opponent stepped out from behind the shroud of green mist. The horrifying ogre wielded a nasty looking battleaxe that glinted dangerously in the dark shroud of the underground. What was that? A man or a tank? It didn’t matter, what did matter was that there was more than one. One for each of them, apparently, and chances were they really would be fighting for their lives this time. Casting a glance in Jack’s direction, it seemed that he was worried too. Then again, how often did he have to deal with this sort of thing in the Netherworld? Jared grimaced as the foul beasts lumbered forward, accompanied now by bat-like creatures with deranged expressions on their spherical facebodies.

Hearing Atrats’s hasty reply forced his green orbs to squint into a menacing glare. Well, it wasn’t Atrats’s fault that there would soon be even more monsters to try and tear them to shreds, though the fact that these weren’t even the same demons he had seen earlier didn’t help Jared’s quickly rotting attitude. All the better, maybe being angry would help him to fight more ruthlessly, though ore than likely it would just cause him to be reckless and make a great deal of mistakes. No, he couldn’t lose his head this time.

Not wanting to waste any more time, he cast a nasty look in the ogre’s direction, almost letting it know there wasn’t much time left for it to live. By now his eyes were streaked with golden highlights as he rushed forward, knowing Jack had done the same with his own opponent. Just before he reached the ogre, that foreboding axe came crashing down before him, and he promptly disappeared…

Thinking he was rather crafty indeed, he reappeared on top of the ogre with the intent of driving his sword through the beast’s skull, though he had forgotten about the bats fluttering at the ogre’s shoulders, seemingly harmless. They had chosen that moment to knock Jared from his perch, just in time too, for with the beast’s quick reflexes [much faster than he had thought possible for a monster of that size], had he stood there a moment longer, he would have felt the cold steel of the axe before his vision faded to black. However, since he fell from the imaginary target painted on the fiend’s skull, the axe embedded itself into the back of its own head where Jared had been moments before. Distracted with the needle-like fangs clasped onto his arm, he didn’t notice the hulking beast begin to teeter on its feet unsteadily, though the impact that followed shook the whole dwelling. The disgusting crack of bone echoed through the tunnels as the beast met the cement floor with the loudest thud imaginable before disintegrating into a wisp of black smoke. Now unperturbed by that foul diversion, he turned once again to face the two bats, one of which who’s jaws were clamped tightly onto his right arm, causing warm vermillion to ooze from his flesh and drop in splotches to the floor. The other beast was circling around him, teasing him like a cat would a mouse. Staring fixedly into the biting creature’s crazy gaze, his sword suddenly ignited inside of the bat’s throat, causing a mad series of shrieks to emit from its burning body before it too disappeared in a black cloud.

With those two out of the way, he turned his gaze to his last opponent which held the same crazed expression as its twin. Before making a move to fight it, he quickly turned to Jack to see how he was doing with his own battle.

Roasting spider flesh. Jack laughed along with Jared, too caught up in the creatures' torment to notice the ominous shadows like his partner had.

The fire suddenly died down as the briars retreated into the earth. Jack's alarmed look proved that he didn't intend to dispel them, and he quickly pulled up his sleeve to observe his bare arm where he had slashed himself earlier. The blood trick had worn off, meaning no more
Form spells without another sacrifice. But it had chosen just the right time to wear out - the only remaining spiders were now too weak to continue their assault. One crippled gray one shot a webby liquid at Jack's face, but Atrats drenched the monster in black goo and it died with a shriek. Spitting furiously, Jack wiped the web off of his face and got a clear look at the newest wave.

Out of the ring stepped a terrible ogre of a fiend. It resembled both a man and a rhinoceros in its build, except it had chipped tusks coming out of its head and its skin was rotted off at several parts of its body, showing its weathered skeleton beneath. It had bulky forearms and shins, but the upper parts of its limbs were extremely stringy. The beast weilded an enormous battleaxe that did not look at all friendly. With a booming roar, the ogre called another of its kin into the ring from the opposite side, this one closer to Jared.

Jack: "... ... ... That... uh, God, I don't even know what that thing is."

But that wasn't all. Eight identical bat-like monsters flew in as well, two accompanying each ogre and four forming their own troupe. They were really just round blobs with wings sticking out, and enormous goofy mouths filling the bottom half of their bodies. Their skin had a black and white checkerboard pattern, and they had bulging eyes that stared with a crazed look. Now that this battalion had assembled, the ogres came for Jack and Jared separately, and the four bats fluttered madly toward Atrats. Jack groaned frustrated, hoping the fight to end soon. This was getting a bit old.

Jack: "Atrats, just how much better is this going to get? How many demons did you see coming through?"

Atrats quivered at the oncoming monsters, and answered Jack a bit distractedly.

Atrats: "Uh, I dunno... it's kinda strange, y'know, these aren't the same demons that I saw at all. The ones I saw were all cat-like and had turquoise X-ey marks on them. Yipe!"

Jack: "What? These aren't the same ones? Brilliant. More demons wandering around earth. Let’s just deal with this load now. Watch your head, Jared."

Jack raced toward his ogre, darting left and right as he closed in to confuse the stupid thing. He was able to dodge past both of the bats as they swept at him, and finally with a leap he intended to quickly stick his blade into the ogre's fat forehead. Yet it had reflexes quicker than he anticipated, and his jump was stopped short when the ogre raised the flat side of its axe in Jack's trajectory. Jack hit the metal weapon with a clunk, and fell down to the ground to land on his back. Ouch...

Although they made quite a team in the way they were destroying the putrid creatures, he could tell that they weren’t making too much of a dent in the spiders’ forces. Despite their best efforts, the enemy seemed endless in supply and Jared really didn’t want to see what they looked like up close and personal. He watched as Jack unleashed his bullet-like shadow powers, annihilating many of the spiders, though they were easily replaced with more. He looked to Jack as if he expected him to have some sort of answer to their apparent dilemma. It seemed that Jack had an idea after all…

Reminiscent of their previous battle, thorns fought through the concrete and surrounded them, though this time they were to aid their cause rather than kill Jared. The spiders, frustrated with being deprived of their meal, quickly began eating through their defenses. To Jack’s question, his response was a mere devious smirk as fire once again ignited his hand and soon spread throughout the black vines, incinerating the munching necrachnids before they could get any closer to the three of them. The number of spiders was dwindling quickly now, thanks to Jack’s idea. His grin grew wider as he watched their assailants burst into flame, and soon a dark chuckle rose from his throat. That was, of course, before he saw the ominous shadows approaching from the portal.

This just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?” he said sarcastically to Jack as he braced himself for another onslaught and a different tactic to conquer it.

Jack worriedly analyzed the situation. The three of them were performing heroically, but they still weren't enough to hold off the spiders, which crept ever closer. Now desperate for a way to hold off the fiends, Jack pulled more shadows into his hand like he had earlier in his spar with Jared. However, instead of expelling them as wispy beams he rapidly fired them as pill-shaped blast, perhaps shooting fifty a second at the nechrachnids. The demons he hit were knocked back and screeched as the shadowy bullets punctured their soft bodies, and though he hit many of them, there were simply too many! Jack anxiously looked back at Jared to see how he was faring. His fire was working rather well... suddenly, an idea came to him.

Jack: "Hey, Jared! Feel like sharing some of that fire?"

Black thorns sprouted around them to make a tight protective ring, and not a moment too soon - the spiders on Jack's side, at least, were just about to swarm over them. The horrible bugs, now faced with this obstacle, busied themselves with eating through it. Wouldn't it be terrible for them if their thorny snack were suddenly lit ablaze? Jack laughed darkly at the idea.

The spiders stopped pouring from the portals, and in their place appeared much larger shadows in the green ring...

His expression seemed to jump at the words ‘healing potion’. All worries left his mind as he caught the bottle and, with a smile, popped the lid off and drank it down. Removing the flask from his lips, he looked as if he had eaten a bug and wiped his mouth off with the sleeve of his coat. “Thanks, Jack. I needed that.” He knew naught where Jack had come up with healing potions, though his knowledge of Jack and the Netherworld was limited.

After a bit of a tingly feeling subsided, he could no longer feel the pain throbbing in his wings, nor the discomfort of the bite wounds. In fact…he couldn’t even see them anymore! That potion really was something, for it not only healed his physical injuries, but also renewed his confidence in how long he would be able to fight.

Grasping the hilt of his sword tightly, poison eyes shifted keenly, scanning the silhouettes that had begun their approach. Some part of him actually thought he could analyze what was marching through the portal, though the other part of knew he would have to roll with the punches, so to speak.

Looking at Jack from the corner of his eye, he nodded to show he understood their plan. Their task didn’t sound that hard. All they had to do was repel the fiends and force them back through the portal. Easy enough, right? He didn’t even want to think about what lurked on the other side of the portal, so he made a large mental note not to go through the gate.

Distracted by his thoughts, he was snapped back to reality by the sound of hundreds of disgusting legs rubbing together and skittering across the ground. Slightly alarmed, though he did not show it, he summoned a fireball in his left hand, which grew rapidly and illuminated part of the sewer. What ugly creatures these were! Hundreds of eyes squinted in annoyance at the adamant light-source as grinding jaws grew closer every second. Finally, when the fireball was about as large as a car, he hurled it at the second squadron of necrachnids. Vile, bulbous bodies set aflame where they stood, they continued running about in a mad, screeching frenzy in an attempt to extinguish the flame, only to find themselves fading to a sizzling heap of disheveled remains. Did fire count as a light based attack? If not, then he hadn’t bothered learning any either. He was a demon, after all!

Pleased that his fire had worked, he decided to try something else to ease his curiosity. As he started to charge another fireball, he thrust his blade into the ground. The blade itself seeped through and became embedded in the floor as a black carpet of dark energy crept its way towards the vampiric spiders, imitating their quick movements in the way that it advanced. As it reached the spiders, the sort of black shadow acted as tar and stopped the spiders. Although they tried vigorously to free themselves from the ensnarement, they soon found themselves sinking as if in black, gooey quicksand. It was not long before they completely vanished from sight and ceased to exist, having sunken into the floor and been trapped.

Jared threw the prepared fireball at another legion of beasts, obliterating them as the first one had. Though the idea of the black ooze had been a good one, he would soon need his sword for battle as some of the remaining necrachnids were getting wise and using their dying brethren as a bridge to cross the black sea. He turned to see how Jack was faring against the brutes when he saw Atrats actually do something useful for a change. Seeing that his sword was no longer doing them any good implanted in the ground, he drew it back to his hand and waited for the brigade to move a bit closer. He wondered what other monstrosities would make their way through the portal, but for now, he was fixed on the spiders.

Bleah, sorry I took so long to respond...

Jack was surprised that Jared made the decision to stay. Normally it didn't even take the horrors of the Netherworld for someone to want to get away from him when they had the chance, but here he was, going to face danger by his side. So strange... could this be the start of a... friendship? Shaking his head to wake up from his thoughts, Jack produced another glass bottle from his coat.

Jack: "This is a healing potion. Here," he tossed the bottle to Jared, "You ought to have some. Careful though, it tastes about as bad as a rotten burger."

The glowing ring around them darkened with the silhouettes from the other side. Jack crouched into ready position and charged some green energy in his hand. Atrats circled furiously around him.

Jack: "If we can just push them back through the other side, I can safely dispel the soul scope. Don't go through yourself, though. You wouldn't want to see what's on the other side."

From all directions suddenly burst forth a swarm of spidery demons! The fiends were oddly bulbous in their shape, with spiraling black and white designs on their bodies and numerous eyes bulging from random parts of their head. The horde rushed at the isolated warriors, gnashing their pincers with mindless hunger. Jack observed the oncoming force and held his dagger arm back, waiting for the right moment.

Jack: “Necrachnids. Starving pests of the afterlife. Try to use light-based attacks on anything we see, if you have any. I don’t bother learning them.”

Jack’s energy finished charging, and he fired a neon-green ball at the ground in front of the spiders coming at his side. Upon hitting the ground, the ball broke into smaller pieces that coated a wide portion of the ground and sank into it, leaving a faint glow where they remained. Many of the first spiders in the wave tripped into these spots and were vaporized. Jack tossed his dagger as the horde was stalled and it flew back and forth across the lines, slicing through the fiends all on its own. Yet the spiders were still advancing too fast… another twenty seconds and they’d be at close range.

Atrats, in a stunning display of usefulness, made a squeaking noise and blasted a wave of ink at a section of the spiders. All of the monsters that were coated in the mess grew suddenly, but then crippled into withered gray husks. Atrats chuckled and commended himself.

His spirits were beginning to dampen and all hope seemed lost. Rising to his feet, he couldn't think of what to do next. Probably go back to the store and get some more groceries, though he couldn't imagine the weird looks he would get if he walked into the market looking like he did. Blood leaking from various wounds in his body, tattered clothing, and most of all, his wings [though if he wanted do, he could draw them back into his body]. Just as he was about to leave the sewers, he was surprised to see Jack quickly stand up without uttering so much as a cough. Wasn’t he just…dead? Jared stared on with a shocked and confused expression, though it quickly faded with Jack’s explanation. He should’ve known he had another nifty trick up his sleeve.

Heh, of course you weren’t dead! I was just…testing you.” With that, he poked Jack in the arm just to make sure he was really there. Of course, he was. Judging by how Jack’s eyeliner was running down his face like a whore crying in the back of an alley, he could only guess his own dark makeup was a mess as well.

Awe, you fought great yourself. I’m glad we’re friends rather than enemies though,” he let out a light chuckle as he held out his hand, but snatched it back abruptly when the little sprite appeared between the two. Him again… he thought bitterly to himself as he leered at Atrats, though the little creature seemed more jumpy than normal. Green eyes squinted at him as he blurted out the catastrophe at hand. Following Jack’s gaze, he turned to look at the soul scope and watched it shift to an unearthly mist.

Disregarding Atrats, he turned his attention back to Jack, listening intently as he explained what was about to happen. They had just gotten done fighting for their lives, hadn’t they? And now Jack was going to do it all over again!? The thought of leaving to buy groceries promptly fled his mind as a wicked grin slowly spread across his face.

Spooky horrors, eh? Can’t say I’ve seen many of those…” Looking momentarily to the hole in the ceiling, he scoffed and flicked Atrats in the nose [or, where his nose would be if he had one]. “Don’t worry lil’ nuisance, I’m not going anywhere. I couldn’t very well leave Jack here to have all the fun to himself, now could I?” His emerald eyes shone deviously, almost matching the poison green color of the mist now surrounding them. Truthfully, he was unsure how long he could hold out against whatever made its way through the portal, but he wasn’t about to let his newfound companion face it alone. Besides, who could choose shopping over this? Looking at Jack, he rose an eyebrow at the crystal flask. “Say, uh...Jack? Whassat you got there?

Jack remained motionless for a just a few more seconds, but his eyes did spring open, glowing brilliantly green once more. He made no coughing or choking as he quickly pulled himself onto his knees, although he spat out some of the disgusting sewer water that had gotten into his mouth. After a brief pause, he spoke.

Jack: "Ah, you didn't need to worry. It's kinda hard for me to die... being dead and all, heh. Ack, my spine..."

Jack wiped the water off of his face. His makeup was ruined...

Jack: "Well, I guess since you had to fetch me out of there, you're the winner. Well done."

Jack gestured for a handshake, but upon holding his hand out there was a puff of smoke in front of it, and Atrats was there floating between them. He twitched little more rapidly than usual.

Atrats: "Jack! JACK! Jack, Jaaack! The soul scope! Oh, it's terrible! "

Jack became very alarmed.

Jack: "No! Did the council find out I was using it?"

Atrats: "No, it's a different terrible! See, I was floating around the Netherworld, looking for a good spoondly to chuck near Suffering, when I found a pack of spooky horrors! Oh, Jack, they were coming through a portal to the world of the living, and I'm pretty sure it's your portal! Weren't you watching the soul scope?"

Jack: "Well I wasn't, but I had the ghost and everyth - "

Upon looking toward green sphere, he saw that the ghost he conjured was gone. Of course, its magic must have been spent in heat of the fight, and Jack didn't even notice. The soul scope fluctuated again, and morphed from its sphere shape into a mist that drifted all around the perimeter of the chamber. Now genuinely worried, Jack turned to Jared. Atrats sobbed hysterically behind them.

Jack: "Alright, perhaps I was a bit too careless. The soul scope also acts as a portal between the worlds of the living and the dead, and needs to be monitored so nothing escapes through. Whatever's coming out of that end now is almost assuredly not going to be pretty. Heh, as much fun as it'd be to see the spooky horrors of the Netherworld run rampage through this city, I've got to stop them, but you don't have to stay and I suggest you do not, otherwise you'll end up fighting for your life."

Atrats worriedly nudged Jack by the shoulder. Jack quickened his speech.

Atrats: "Jaaack... they're - they're coming!"

Jack: "You can escape through that hole in the ceiling, Jared. It's been nice sparring, and I'll try to find you again sometime. You better get goin'!"

The green mist closed its ring around the room, and the once dark chamber was now completely lit in the deathly green. Jack pulled from his pocket an angular crystal bottle that had a little skull cork and was filled with a purple liquid, popped off the top and drank the stuff down. It was Jared's choice if he wanted to stay and fight...

Not so taunting now, are we? he thought smugly to himself as he watched Jack meet wih the torrentous wave of bats. As he watched Jack fall, his eyes glowed green through the darkness- all that was visible of him was the shining, green orbs. Slowly, the rest of him faded in as well, standing before the water where Jack had fallen. He smirked as he looked down into the murky water, trying to see anything, any signs of Jack. There were none. Crossing his arms, he stood there and waited, but nothing happened. No bubbles, nothing.

"Jaaack...It's not funny any more, c'mon. Jack?"

A worried expression now present on his face, the silence was deafening. The bats were gone, as was the briar. There was no sign that Jack had ever been there. Was it a dream? No, it hurt too much to be a dream. Staring dully into the water, he made a decison. Folding his wings against his body, he jumped in. The cold water was pitch black at first, but then he saw a shadow sinking down...It had to be Jack. Using his wings to help him swim, he rocketed towards the lifeless body and pulled it to the surface. With a splash of cold water, they were both on land now, though Jack still wasn't moving. What had he done? It was only supposed to be a friendly engagement! He stared down gravely at him, he had been laughing before! This had to be some sort of joke. Slapping him in the face, he tried to wake him, "Jack, c'mon! You weren't s'posed to die. Wake up!" The roaring fire behind them died down and disappeared almost completely into the ground, leaving the chamber once again dark and gloomy.
