So yeah, my post quality has clearly been dropping lately, so I'm going to take a break from the main board. I'll still post here. I plan to make a new layout before I return; it's been too long since I made something. |

Oh, thanks for reminding me!
Only way to celebrate, gotta eat some pie. Blueberry, apple, cherry, gonna die. What's the day that won't repeat? 3/14, for the digitally elite. Yeh, anyway, Base 2 is perfection. Binary works in all cases ever, because you go straight from 1 to 10 and you're in the clear. There's no way to fuck it up. |

I have a trig test on pi day
it is appropriate I plan to rock it |

I know I'm a nerd. I got nothin to hide.
Which reminds me, Tuesday is pi day! |

Oh no! Now everyone who reads the secret forum on the ROM hacking board will think I'm a nerd!! |

This thread makes you all look like nerds.
I hope you realize that. Oh and congrats Zem. CONGRATS DAMN IT. |

No, it's not more practical to have base 10, it's just unpractical to switch away from it.
But you're right, it's a silly thing to argue about. Let's shift our attention to any of the other threads on the board, where doubtless some matter of utmost importance is being discussed. YEAH? YEAH? |

But this is a rather silly thing to argue about, don't you guys agree? So what if there are going to be more decimal numbers? It's more practical to have base 10. |

Maybe base 30 (2*3*5) would be a bit more reasonable. |

Base 8 actually would suck more than base 10. The amount of repeating fractions depends upon how many prime numbers divide into the base. That's why I picked 510510, because it's 2*3*5*7*11*13*17.
For example, 1/3 would be represented as "0.*" where * would be the symbol used to represent the decimal number 170170. Notice this is because 1/3 = 170170/510510. etc etc |

As Tatrion said, the fact that we have ten fingers probably contributed to our using base ten. Base eight would've been cool, but...anyhow, happy 1000th post. Hope you're around for many more posts in the future. |

I think the ancient Mayans used a base 60 system. That's divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60.
12/60 digits were divisible, or 1/5. In base 10, 1, 2, 5, and 10 are divisible, which is 4/10, or 2/5. Aren't you glad you aren't a Mayan at least? Base 16. 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16; 5/16. Base 8. 1, 2, 4, 8. 4/8, or 1/2. It seems the less numbers in a base, the more practical it is. Base 2, 1 and 2. 2/2, or 100% of the numbers are divisible. That's probably why computers use base 2, they'll never encounter a decimal. But it's too cumbersome for human use. The optimal base system probably would have been 8, but it became 10 since you have 10 fingers. Yay. Whatever your base system, happy 3E8th, 1750th, 1111101000th, 1000th post. Now go for your FFFth post (4095th) |

If we used base 510510 then most if not all of your common repeating fractions would disappear. Of course we'd need 510510 symbols to display numbers... . I'll get the chinese working on it right away. <- my first ever use of smiley. |

TITS
that is my 1000 post. Tits. I'm not in a position to make an image, and I want to post this now because if I don't I might post somewhere else without thinking about it. So to make this thread interesting and not useless I'll ramble about bases. Too bad we ended up with five fingers. Four fingers, or six fingers, that would have been nice. Base 8, power of two is sweet. That would be easier. Base 12, divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 6. It's annoying having to go into repeating decimals just because you divided a round number by 3. Base 16 would be the sweetest, because hex turned out to be so useful. Anyway, base 10 sucks hard. 10 is divisible by 2 and 5 and NOTHING ELSE. That means we go into decimal places way more often. Pain in the ass. 10 is almost entirely unrelated to everything. 5 isn't very common either. It bugs me. But since we use base 10 anyway, post 1000 looks special. So hey. |
