The Ice Climbers were in a game that was MEANT as both fan service, and to help bring back some old games and characters people may not know. Mr. Game and Watch is basically their way of honoring what eventually became both the NES and the Gameboy. ROB was a gimmick but a working one back in the NES days, without it there may not of been a Nintendo. It's been appearing in several games as a cameo before it became a secret playable character anyway. I also believe you mean FAMICOM, AKA the japanese NES...
