No...no it wouldnt.

The thing is, you have to distinguish between newbie hacks and n00b hacks.

Even more importantly, you have to distinguish between newbies and n00bs. I think that there was a lot of idiocy here. But I also think that the environment was not particularly suitable for breeding intelligence. If someone comes up and posts their first hack, and its the worst hack you've ever seen....so what? Its their first hack. Help them. I dont care what you say, there are always suggestions to be offered, no matter how bad the hack is. To say that it is impossible to suggest a problem to solve because there are too many problems has got to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. This is an environment that promotes intelligence. If the newbie does not take the help to heart and shows no interest in improving their methods, then they are not a newbie. They are, in fact, a n00b. Particularly if theyre dicks about it. This is when action is to be taken, against the N00B. Their hack sucks. Thats cool if youre here to learn. If youre just here to post shitty hacks, then we dont wantcha. Shape up or ship out.

If you just kick people who really are just plain new and dont know any better instead of trying to help them, they cant learn. Obviously, that doesnt promote learning. In fact it discourages it. Learning is the root of intelligence, people. If you kick out all the newbies who are willing to learn without giving them a chance to do so, you will find an extremely low influx of new talent. Your old talent will get stale, and at that point it is only a matter of time before the whole thing dies. Its like if we banned children because they cant do math, and we dont want to bother teaching them. The human race would inevitably die out. It might take a hundred years, but it WOULD happen.

Thats the community. The mods have to do even MORE to help. Go through the archives now and again. Say once a month. Or maybe a page a week, starting from the oldest, and starting over when you get to the newest. Weed out the dead worthless threads, while keeping the good stuff. Good stuff INCLUDES bad hacks where good critisism is provided, so that the newbies might learn from them. Unless, of course, the exact same info is given in another thread. This results in a clean forum we can all enjoy. Send out some PMs to people who are getting out of hand, or who just arent listening. Insist on a reply of comprehension and complience. Hand out bans to dicks and people who just dont want to learn. Yeah, its a lot of work. Being a mod is. If you dont want to put in the work, step down and let someone who IS take over. Those last lines arent directed at anybody in particular, Im just saying being a mod is difficult. Not everyone can handle the load, and some who used to may have a new real life situation that does not allow enough time for managing such a populated board. Life happens.

So, please. Control your rage, mighty mods. Temper your swords so that they might best serve the people charged to your care. Let us exercise some constructive discrimination when passing your holy justice. Remember, power without wisdom is chaos.

I shed some tears now. *sniff* that was beautiful!

No, seriously though; I agree, when I first came to this site back in the day; I was treated like crap, and I was being kind as all get-out. Y'know? I had some hard problems, about exits in LM, but now it's like riding a bike; the point is that I learned all on my own, and did not have any help hardly from anyone because they were the biggest "johnsons" in the world. Luckily for me I loved this SMW hacking so much I didn't want to leave; I'm glad it's better for me today, but still...

^^^^^ Great words. I have also seen many, MANY cases (not here, mind you) of people mixing up newbs and n00bs. I'm a newb (at the time of posting this, anyways), and my first hack will likely not be too successful, but at least I'm trying. If you say in the rules that we can't ask stupid questions and that we "MUST UNDERSTAND THE HELP FILE AND FAQS", then it makes everyone new here nervous to post, afraid of being flamed, having topics moved, or even being banned (yes, newb minds work like that.)

Help files are very, VERY confusing. The FAQ helps solve some of the problems, but not nearly all of them. It doesn't really have enough information on ExGFX or the answers to questions many of us would like to know. Human nature: People learn from mistakes. I remember several years ago, I was the worst n00b you'd ever see online. That was all until I got banned (twice) for being underage on GameFAQs, discovered due to my idiocy and poor grammar skills, but now I'm one of the most inelligent people there.

I'm fine with giving the n00bs what's theirs, but you first must sort out them from us, the newbies. Otherwise, it'll become just what you'd hoped to prevent, the same people making the same hacks, instead of letting new people join and help share and create their new ideas.

Oh, so we're just going to fill the new forum with noob-bashing... was that the point? I mean, looking at any new person's hack thread on the old board you get tons of it anyway.

The reason we nuked the whole thing is because it was easier than going through the junk to find the few good threads there.

Maybe we'll move some of the 'good' ones back.

This type of stuff is what the moderators are looking for; constructive critisicm with suggestions. I was even complimented, which suprised me

Even though that hack was my warm-up (I think I'm a bit better at it now ), it demonstrates that newbies that aren't shunned will turn out quite well, like I, uh, did
I just don't like the fact that it was implied that every single thread in forum 20 was garbage. That's simply not true. There were several very good hacks and screenshots and code changes in that forum.

Yes, each word is a seperate link, and I got all those by the second page on 57 TPP (threads per page). There are doubtlessly even more that I didn't even take the time to note, but probably deserve the same recognition. I could also make another list of very valid and not idiotic questions that were asked there.
Once again, each word is a seperate link.

Unfortunatly, I'll admit there were a lot of... obvious questions and somewhat poor hacks, but I don't really feel as if they merited a total forum lock... the expert in anything was once a beginner.

But what do I know, really.

If a newbie posts a stupid thread, well erase it. If he posts 5, erase them all. The way I see it is a normal manteinance clean-up. It's like mowing the lawn. Nuking the lawn and deploying a task force doesn't make it look any better!
Maybe if they read the rules in the first place, and practiced a bit before posting their glitchy messes, we wouldn't HAVE stupid threads. This is what we're trying to fix.

Rules are made because they are needed. I'm 100% sure that the SMW Hacking mods wouldn't have ressorted to 'n00b slaughter mod ™'

-if people actually read the damn stickies, read the damn help file
- actually spent more than 5 minutes on their 'hack'
- fixing the obvious glitches (when half the screenshots have a visible glitch in it, it's not a good sign)

In short, if people actually used common sense... Eveything would be fine.

Well, they should at least have known quite a bit, after all, the rules DO say read the FAQ. It explains pretty well how to do most things in order to hack.

Too bad I don't care about staying active in a communty full of assholes.

Hell, I'm not going to lie: I would have opened up and posted a bit more in this forum, but I was already afraid of being flamed for asking a simple ExGFX question in the appropriate thread.

And yes, I know I'll be banned. I honestly couldn't give two shits.

On an unrelated note, I can practicially see it now.

"NEW RULE: NO SHITTY HACKS"

Oh, and mods, why not go ahead and show off your powers and ban me now? Perhaps I'll make a good example for the next generation of newcomers here at Acmlm.

Douchebags.

give them some more in-depth constructive criticism regarding their hacks and quit expecting every new hack to be the next DW:TLC.

These are the only parts of your post that actually make some sense. While it MAY be true that this will just cycle all over again, hopefully the mods will lay down the law and prevent this from happening. And yes, constructive criticism is key. If everyone bashes your hack, you'll obviously lose interest and stop working on it.

However. There is a fine line between what is considered "bad" hacks, and those that are downright failures. Look at Legoman's or golden goomba's hacks. It's really hard, almost downright impossible, to offer constructive criticism for a hack that is just so awful. It's even harder to do so when you KNOW they won't listen to you anyway. It's not that we expect every hack to be "the next DW: TLC", it's just that we're tired of seeing the same crappy hacks over and over again. Plus, after seeing some of the recent great hacks out there (Bowser's Return, Panic in the MK, Odyssey, et al), it's no doubt the expectations for new hacks begian rising.

Jesus fucking christ.

You know, if you guys were nicer to new members and didn't act like an arrogant prick to everyone who didn't immediately know EVERYTHING about SMW hacking, you wouldn't have had to make a new board and completely fuck up another one.

Yes, some people did do stupid things (and did post shitty hacks), but that doesn't mean you have to trash ALL of the goddamn threads out of that board and start from scratch. All you did by creating this board and fucking up the old one was just feed a cycle; people are still going to be new to the forums, people are still going to be new to SMW hacking, people are still going to have crappy hacks.

Instead, you should have PM'ed the offending members and tell them they need to straighten up, or in some cases, give them some more in-depth constructive criticism regarding their hacks and quit expecting every new hack to be the next DW:TLC.

You mods fucking abuse power and just cause upheaval in your forums.

Which is exactly why we decided not to nuke the forum entirely. You can still view the old threads anytime you want, you just can't reply to them (not that we allow bumps like that anyway).
