Glad to hear it. I was actually looking at your Return to the Mushroom Kingdom thread yesterday and remembered that I'd made those. I went ahead and submitted them to the ExGfx section at SMWCentral.

Don't worry, Lost World is my primary concern right now. (Although I haven't got much done on it this week besides some remappings) But since I have to make new foreground sets and overworld graphics for that game anyway, those graphics will eventually be transferred back to Redrawn.

What, the NES games? I've made new sprites for my my SMB1 hack Bowser Vs. Wario and my perpetually unfinished SMB2 hack, but nothing that other people can really use as a base like this. I only tried SMB3 hacking once, created one level with Thwomps, and never even attempted to change any graphics. Maybe when I could take on such a project when I'm done with Lost World, but I typically just make sprites whenever I need them.

Woah, those are pretty sweet, Icegoom. I say go for it submitting them to SMWcentral. Someone could definitely make use of those Koopas.

That's a good idea, I'll try that. Thanks.

Is it even possible to make a patch that would change graphics but not affect level data? This isn't a patch or a hack so much as it's a collection of graphics and shared palettes. (Maybe it should be released a zip file full of .bin and .pal files instead of an .ips...) You can add them to any in-progress hack by extracting them from SMWRedrawn and then inserting them into your own game.

Yeah, I probably already went too far changing Fishbones into Sharkbones, Reznors into Wario World Triceratopses, and Fishin' Boos into Yoshi's Island Stretches. I should have kept these graphics in the same basic form as their original SMW counterparts. Doing sprites based off of blurry N64/Cube/Wii screenshots is pretty difficult anyway.

Incidentally, my original intention when I started this was to just fill out the SMB3 sprite set. I didn't do this because I have trouble doing stuff in SMB3's style. I did a fairly complete SMB3 Koopa set a while back, though:

Have you posted any of this new graphics on your website? You should post it all on your website so people can check it out. And you should post the older stuff too, so I can compare.

The styles are different enough between Redrawn and Lost World that upgrading some sprites would mean upgrading them all, so I probably won't bother. Changing the Koopas would cause a lot of problems; they'd lose their easy portability between hacks since you have to do remapping to keep them from glitching up other sprites. Stupid Nintendo using the blank space tile above the Koopa's head as blank space in a bunch of other sprites...

Man, I haven't touched my site in months. I need to update all those Lost World screenshots...

I said "copy"; there was no way I was going to risk my hack's well-being for a brief playthrough with new graphics. Nothing was lost.

Although are you sure about that? It sure is limiting if this can only be used for the original game and things built off of that...

lol, sorry buddy but you cant use this patch on a hack. Only the original rom. You just lost your entire hack... Hope you made copies!

BTW Icegoom, you gonna release an updated version?

Edit: Also, just for fun, I decided to stick that patch onto a copy of my own hack. But for some reason, nothing loads beyond the shiny Nintendo logo. Any idea why this happens?

(I don't have any other patches into my game, and my sprite editing with YY-CHR was minimal and apparently unobtrusive. Is it because of the darker-than-normal palette of my opening movie?)

Have you posted any of this new graphics on your website? You should post it all on your website so people can check it out. And you should post the older stuff too, so I can compare. I can see your getting better at spriting. I know its hard to imagine guys, Icegoom getting BETTER at spiting, not much room to grow you know?

What I noticed when comparing styles:

Koopas look more like they came out of the shell in the old style, they dont really match in the new one, cuz the nose is more pointy after coming out.
Koopa's look better in the new style, better noses, I like em rounder.
Still too much difference in shadowing on the cheaks and nose though. Looks worse now but the shading is based on pallettes I know. Maybe darkening just the two brightest colors? That might mess up the whole pallette, though. I guess I'll figure out a custom pallette when you release the finalized graphics.
The two new koopas look the same, which is a let down, but they look nice.

Like the old goombas better but the new ones fit the graphics better. Maybe the cheakbone is too high on them? Maybe not. Still love your Goombas over any goombas I've ever seen in the mario series, though. Either version.

I liked how the pirhana plant had green lips before, but I can see why you changed it. Trying to keep it like the original so people can use em. I also like the dark color before, made em look gloomy, but the new version looks poisonous so its cool.

Definately like the new fish better.

Definately like the new pokeys better.

All in all, I like the new style better I supose. Keep up the awesome work Icegoom, I'll be cheering from the sidelines!

Wow! Now that's a bump. I haven't touched this topic since I went on hiatus at the beginning of the summer. Most of those critiques are over issues I've completely forgotten about and would need to reread the entire topic to get context. For a lot of the sprites people had issues with, I included alternate graphics in the zip file. (Rip Van Fish, Fishin' Boo, Reznor...) Others, like Urchins and Bowser's Clown car, are very limited in what I can change because of the way the game constructs the sprites from smaller pieces.

My goal here was to make graphics that would work without any ExGfx or custom palettes. Anyone could just rip them and plug them into their own game without a lot of work. This had a lot to do with the skill level I was at at the time, which was basically "I know how to use the red and green mushrooms." I've progressed quite a bit with Mario's Lost World and find a lot of my work here to be ugly now.

I've been thinking of replacing some of the old sprites in here with color reduced versions of my Lost World sprites:

But maybe not. They're different styles, really, and I'd need to remap some stuff to keep those Koopa graphics from glitching up Jumping Piranhas, Springboards, Points, etc...

What I need to do to consider this "complete" instead of "demo":

Separate Luigi Graphics (He'd be, what, my fourth completely new hero sprite?)
Finish and degrainify the Overworld set (And fix the palettes, which I should be able to do now)
New Cave set (mostly done)
New Castle set (mostly done)
New Ghost House, Switch Palace, and Rope sets
Do something about the backgrounds (Although there's not much I can do without ExGfx...)
Tweak some of the uglier sprites and palettes

Anything else?

Had to pull this awesome thread outta the graveyard. Can't wait for you to finish! Me and all BUT 6 other people can't wait actually. Let me start by saying that I'm not just reviving this cuz Icegoom is so damn cool, I actually have some siggestions.

I like the chucks all fat like that. dont change them at all!

For the third boo why dont you go with something gothic? Like an angry frown, along with the two you already made, the evil smile boo and the crazy...ness... thing...

Do not like the fire balls with the glowing mouths. They just don't look right, can't tell what it is when its moving so fast. how about boos made of fire? that would be kinda cool. Or maybe just fireballs.

Fishin Boo: Love the eyes, dont care for the rest. Dont make the fishin boo look like a lakitu ghost, make him look like a boo. Thats what I think. To many lakitu fishermen.

Keep Rip Van Fish's teeth, those are awesome. Make him such a crazier enemy, and he is crazy, hard to escape him!

Urchin is bad. Sorry man but it's the worst one you made. The face is mariosque but I'm just not feeling the rest of the your graphic style in it you know? I'd change the face , lose the quill nose and lower the eyes is my opinion but I suck at graphics making so that would probably look terrible. You also might wanna reconsider doing the quills.

Thwomps and Thwimps look great. Don't change them. You did perfectly (like most of your work) the first time around. Although you might wanna change the lotus flowers. I know you don't like em, but they should at least look noticably dirfferent. Try making them look like a deformed pirhana plant.

Speaking of which, Pirhana's lips are perfect too, ignore that guy who said they were too fat, makes the pirhana look scarier.

On wendy you really should change the top of her head to skin color. And the necks are a bit to long, but it makes Lemmy look cool, whereas it kinda wrecks Wendy. And I know her head will be flaoting, but isn't there any way around that?

I never did like bowser's clown car thing. It's just humiliating... You should make something else as optional replacement cuz that thing is just stupid. Maybe a flying dinosaur or a more evil looking flying machine. The whole face on the car never did it for me. Worst last guy ever. If you dont wanna thats fine, I dont think anyone but me cares so I dont wanna bother you about something that only one guy is gonna use.

Bottom Peach. Period. Change her clown car graphics if you have to. The top peach... scares me...

The -> sign is supposed to look like 2 boards, thats cool. But I think everyone (except me) would like it better as one board.

The green ! block is too green, make it darker, I think. This is going to mess with your other pallettes right? It would be great if it looked darker, but not at the expence of other, more important sprites.

As for the skin with the blue pallette, go for something in between. that looked the best out of all I've seen. I like em both but I think some of the yellow ones are too light and some of the orange ones are too dark. And if any skin tones aren't right you might wanna consider downing the lightness on every color to a darker shade. You'd have less color overall, but the sprite would look darker. Then again it will likely look flat too.

Switch the pallettes around too, you know what looks good with your graphics, and that might not be what looks good with SMW's old graphics.

As for fire mario, try making his fire pallette have white pants and orange shirt. I dont know how that would look but I do know that the colors on his skin and gloves wouldn't stick out. DO NOT turn mario's fire version into wario for the love of all that is good! Luigi is cool as waluigi but mario > wario? ... Yeah, no.

Anyway, thats all I had to say! Whoo! Glad I got that out of my system. Can't wait till I see more! Are you still working on this or have you moved to bigger better things? Because you haven't posted in this thread for a while.

Um... You do know that your thread is filled with people calling you "THE SPRITE KING" or saying your graphics are "gorgeous" or "incredible", right?

That's a demand.

That would be why I'm so worried that you'll release an unfinished patch and people will swarm all over it. Can you imagine that simple palette problem in your concrete block being multiplied and echoed for years? That's what will happen if you don't release a finished one for whatever reason.

Heck, that might even happen if you do release a finished one but just not soon enough.

Someone under the impression the sprite was heavily edited could easily believe the original was from M&L. I thought that was where it was from before icegoom mentioned Mario Party Advance and I played through M&L twice and downloaded spritesheets from it. So don't get snippy.

Just to clarify, I am in no way claiming that sprite as my own, as it's a rip straight out of Mario Party Advance. I was just saying that I'm planning to use that as a base when I redraw Mario from a side view. The hands are freakin' huge in the ripped sprite's side and front views, and in the custom poses I created I cut them down to a more realistic size.

Yup, I'd been thinking the blue looked off, too. Fire Mario's palette came from necessity, and I just did Fire Luigi figuring no one would really be using him much anyway.

Yeah, yeah, I know. It's not terribly exciting to play through the same old Super Mario World levels again. This was always intended to just be a resource hack for people to use as a base instead of something people would actually play through. Yeah, I guess you could import the graphics into somebody else's completed level hack to change the look of their game, but the palettes are going to be off and any custom graphics work they've done is going to be ruined. (It'd be fun to try anyway, though)

I'm wondering if I should go ahead and submit this to sites like SMW Central and romhacking.net... It might be quite a while before I get all the foregrounds and backgrounds replaced and make all the necessary corrections to the palettes and the sprites themselves. Of course, I could just be deluding myself into thinking there's going to be any demand for this at all, but I might reach a wider audience of hackers than I would just posting this on this board.

Awesome! It worked for me patched onto a clean ROM, not directly on one that's been hacked. Looks great with the original BGs. I'd clean up the status bar and title logo GFX a bit, they're kinda blocky in comparsion. Those are limited in palette though. I might try extracting the graphics, to see how everything fits in with my levels.
