No to all three questions, emcee. HyperHacker, I did that, and it gave a report that part of the computer might be failing. But I suppose Memtest86 should give me the answers I'll need directly. Otherwise, I suppose I'll have to have it repaired.

Have you installed any new hardware? Upgraded any drivers? Is your hard drive louder than usual?

When you get a BSOD, you'd best off go to Microsoft's web site and search for the numbers it shows. Though random reboots that don't always have one point more toward defective hardware.

Have you tried Memtest86? Defective RAM or CPU sound like the most likely culprits. If it were overheating, I imagine you'd always or never get a BSOD.

Well, it just crashed again - this time, with a BSOD instead. I had another blackout crash earlier. It seems fairly random. Now what's going on?

Being in a well-ventilated area won't help if internal cooling is insufficient, a fan has died, or things are clogged up with dust.

I tried that suggestion (I have XP). It crashed without the BSOD, although I sometimes have seen it for a split second when my computer crashes on start-up. MIDIs play fine, but the computer still eventually crashes. Seeing as how my computer is in a well-ventilated place, I guess it's the power supply that is causing the trouble. Thanks for the help.

What OS do you have? If it's XP, you should turn off auto-reboot (since it's pretty pointless unless you absolutely must have minimal downtime even when there's something wrong with the machine): Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery settings, uncheck Automatically Restart. Next time it happens, you should see a blue screen of death instead; if not, something's gone pretty wrong.

If you don't use XP, or it doesn't give you a BSOD with auto-reboot turned off, then you need to start looking deeper. There's the two common causes of random rebooting: Overheating and bad power supply. Also, see if you can play a MIDI file; your sound card or drivers may be damaged.

On a semi-random basis, my computer resets by itself. The screen blanks out, and it starts over from the BIOS screen. It happens two times in particular - many times when I first start up my computer (it eventually stops), and when I play music. This has only started happening recently (as in, a couple of weeks ago). Any idea as to why this is happening?
