What's wrong with the ! block and numbers?

The numbers look rigid and thinner than the letters. It's like something an 8 year old would whip up in Microsoft paint before she realizes what the "T" button is there for.

The ! block really just looks bad when the shining background fades to the same color as the exclamation point. Then all you can see is a shadow. I debated adding this, since SMB's ? mark boxes had this problem too. But I think your shadow looks a little worse because it's straight, and if you designed a question/exclamation mark box that didn't have this problem at all that would be really cool.

I made a new question block:
(See attachment for picture)

Edit: Grr, the attachment doesn't show up. Posting picture in a minute: http://www.boredom.1.vg/smbhacks/spoilers/9.png

You should really fix your graphics. They're quite bad. Your underground blocks look decent enough, but that's about it.

Cases in point:

The green slash and the L shaped eyes on the clouds and bushes
The frequently disappearing light green bush outline
The incredibly ugly yellow and green smiley flag
Your thin numbers
The battlements on the castles which are too tall
The ?-turned-! block, which looked poor in the original but looks worse with thinner lines and shapes
The square coins

I've fixed the green slash, removed the faces on clouds and bushes, changed the flag to an "M" for Mario, and shortened the battlements.

Edit: Just noticed!
1-3 has a strange bug - There is a question block high up with some coins and a lift going up, but for some reason it never appears again once it's gone up once. Just jump over the hole - you won't be able to get the mushroom/fire flower in the ! block.

Edit2: Made a spoilers, tips and hints page. http://www.boredom.1.vg/smbhacks/spoilers

looks nice, but I agree with everything Glyph said, except for the square coins. I think they look cool.

Hmmm looks fun, even though you say it is crappy, but what I would love to see is, a Giana Sisters hack of SMB1 on NES and maybe even the soundtrack from the othe game hacked into SMB1
Unfortunately Giana Sisters levels would require a lot of rework to work in a Mario game, as the Mario levels use 16x16 tiles wheras Giana uses 8x8.

And from the screenshots, it looks like a good first attempt. I'll give it a try later.

That's actually not half bad for a first attempt...I've definitely seen worse in my thirty-three year long career as a human being. Keep up the good work, it looks promising...something could definitely come of this.

I'm making my second SMB1 hack (first was some experiments with YY-CHR and SMBUtility) and I thought I would post it here.
So far, I have these edited:
* SMB3 Mario players (not done by me)
* Text has shadows
* Some text changed
* New numbers
* New Question Blocks
* Bricks look 3D, "broken stone" floor changed
* Levels 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 edited
* Goombas have a little "hair"
Some screenshots (Outdated, I'll make new screenshots when I make a major update to the hack):

The IPS patch can be downloaded here:

Enjoy my hack...
