Sigh... Me. I HATE IT! But for me it's always Yu-Gi-Oh... They are like, "Hey, Did Yugi get his Ultimate card and win? Loser." And mark me a Yu-Gi-Oh fan even though i never said anything about yugioh...

I gotta agree with Zero on this one in my entire life of watching anime the only time I've seen the bad guys "win" is once maybe twice and only for two episodes max.....That is of cource if you get the "censored" versions of Anime that happens when it goes over the ocean not only are sceens ripped out but at times entire episodes are skipped (ex: In the Megaman EXE Anime they can't even bring themselfs to show Lan/Netto getting scratched by a firikken rock ) (or even better ex2: In the Poke'mon Anime I've heard that in one episode that was removed from Amarican shores Ash accually got a gun and shot someone with it (I've only heard that but I have reliable resorces)).

On the other hand if you think "true" anime (non poke'mon/Yu-gi-oh) is great try surfing around to find some unedited, uncut Japenese episodes of some Anime I garantee the results will be amazing.

Well, not just Western animation, but a lot of things that would be in the same class as a lot of anime; that is, entertainment meant for some of the same demographics. If we're going to look at "artsy" kinds of things, so to speak, well, you'll get more, particularly if you look into older tragedies and all. I meant more popular tv shows and movies and the like.

Anime = one class of Eastern stuff

Western stuff = the entrie class of Western stuff?

If we're comparing anime to the whole of Western story telling, then the West wins out by far on the tragedy/sad ending/bad guy wins front.

If we're talking in strictly Western animation, then yes, you have a point.

Here it's mostly Sailor moon, due to it being very popular a few years ago before Pokémon. My sister is a big fan of it, but I really wonder if it was dubbed from the Japanse or American version. (Swedes are not as picky as Americans when it comes at censoring stuff, but we have our limits too ).

It was dubbed from the japanese original. If you found the swedish version bad, you don't want to touch the american one, believe me.

As for the pickyness you mentioned, I guess you mean Zoicite's sex change in the swedish dub. In that case, that was apparantly a mistake, because the translator was a moron who can't see the difference between men and women.

As for the american dub, however, THERE the sex change was due to american soccer moms being homophobic bastards.

To be fair, it's like that with any field... like, if I say "I like rap" you'll all get images of Eminem and 50 cent dancing in your heads, while I'm more inclined towards, say, MC Solaar.

Or if I express my love for opera, lots of you will go "Oh, fat viking ladies?", which is really only *one* opera (although, mind you, it is a six hour one...)

You know what I noticed:

When I was back in school, it was mostly about Sailor Moon and that type of anime. Maybe some Aikra and so forth, but it wasn't talked about that much at my school and it was a time when I was just starting to get into anime (I was 17).

Then there was this break when I didn't worry about anime, nor talked about it. But when I started to work at Gamestop, OMG, I was in heaven. I learned about anime that I never knew about (same goes for talking with Colin and TJ online) and now talking about anime is common place, especially with the 20-something crowd.

Like I said, just wait until you get into college, and then things'll get a lot better...

While my high school didn't have an anime club, I was relatively fortunate in that there were a few other friends of mine with whom I shared interests of that sort...I guess in a way that was a sort of "support group" for the lot of us

This is why Im glad we have an actual anime club in school... you get people who ACTUALLY want to talk about REAL anime, manga, and games. The club may be only 20 people, but thats a fair enough amount out of a 800 person high school. Plus Ive made some new friends with some common interests

On the other hand, almost every teacher in school shuns us from sponsorship... so... my two cents right there.

I'm currently learning Japanese.. so pretty much everyone in my class watches anime/reads manga. But I seem to be the only guy who's really into anime, manga AND games. The others are like split up in factions and I'm the mediator who knows a lot about everything.

I just don't talk about anime to anyone anymore; I just got so fed up with all the stereotypes. The one's who assume or think that it's all just pokemon, sailor moon etc. I have just one good friend who I share my interest about anime with now, cause we are both “newbies I guess, it’s easier for us to learn and watch.

Pokemon was huge at my school, the trading cards mostly. I used to watch pokemon but lost interest after I experienced true/proper anime. I can't believe that I used to be able to resite all 150 pokemon off the top of my head.

I do find it hard though to talk to people about anime, I haven't watched much anime, as Tarale said, anime here is basically referred to as pokemon or digimon and when your someone who doesn't have cable or know the right places to go to get a wider range of anime shows, you start to feel left out. I'm still new to all these anime.

It does change a lot as you get into college, for two reasons.

The first is simply that you end up having a lot more people having seen some anime and maybe liking it through college friends and the like.

The second really relates largely to why you're running into this problem in the first place. Anime's place in popular culture has really been changing a lot over the past few years. The most visible elements, at least in early years, were Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Pokemon, with Gundam Wing figuring solely into anyone's perception of the mecha community (which I've seen time and again). People who don't really know much about anime are likely to see those as the most 'real' examples; foreign views of American animation are less likely to include "The Simpsons" (popular as they are) as they are to include Disney stuff. That's just what most people see.

Now, in more recent years anime has been growing a bit in popular culture due to the success of films like Metropolis, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, though it is by no means complete. Even those who do recognize it are rather limited, and those are mostly college age and adults...so in high school you're certainly going to see exactly what you have.

See, the crazy anime fans don't bother me unless they try to talk to me.

Because they have the worst timing ever.

I can't even begin to count the times where I am simply relaxing talking with a girl or a friend of mine and some crazy anime fan who heard that I watched an anime they love comes up to me and straight out says "hey, ihearduluvevangelion" in one breath.

Annoying as hell.

Anime fanboys and fangirls scare me MUCH MUCH more than people who don't know what anime is, or think it's all Sailor Moon.

I get a little concerned that some of them don't have much sense of reality. Scary scary scary!

I tend to get along with fairly middle of the road anime fans. Ones that can enjoy their fandom without getting all crazy

I actaulyl used to love the Pokémon animé at some point. Oh god. XD Ironically, I didn't care as much as when I got the game. :/

There's two type of annoying Animé people, the one who really hates it, and the ones who really loves it so much that they want to propose their tape and marry it. I actually met one of thoose later, and like the few nuts in the furry community thoose nuts tend to ruin for the Animé community. lol otakus.
