I took up modding about 2 months ago and so far have wried up a snes controller to a nes and have also now wired up my n64 controller up to usb and have made noise canceling headphones. I plan on making a portable snes if possible (though i'll need to fork out some money for a screen as gba screens are not supposed to work.

You meant, "If you cut a hole and replace the exterior of it with plexiglass" or something.

Not like I would reccomend doing that. It's there for protection against the raditation and even if it dosen't disturb humans, it probably winds up disturbing other equipmnt of yours.

Bet there's a few modders with jumpy screen problems.

Yeah, I wonder that too. Apparently, the radiation can disturb flight-radio, police-radios and other stuff.

Ah, well that's different (radio interference != radiation). As long as you're not like right next door to an airport, police station, or hospital, I can't see it being much problem. (Most cases don't even have RF shielding. Hell, the monitors cause much more interference. Mine jams nearby radios. )

The only modding I've ever done to a system was to break out the little plastic pegs in my SNES to get Panel de Pon to work in it.

Which isn't much, I guess, but I don't really have anything else I would even need to mod.

I donīt know more than that because my little brother brought the magazine with him.

So then I wonder how stores that sell modding tools and companies that make components designed for modding stay in business? Radiation, what the hell.

Shit, that's why I was advised not to put those Uranium 238 in my PC case to replace the LEDs!

There were a ton of different PSX models as well but I'm talking about maybe the first model or two. You're bound to get a couple of lemons when you're just starting to produce a system.

I heard there's 12-16 diffrent models of the PS2.

And the Gamecube like 3 of them... maybe four. Don't know about X-box.

So, it's really true that it's really common with PS2's having trouble reading CD's? I keep hearing alot of people saying that, but never about X-box, Dreamcast or Gamecube...

Lately I been kind of envy at dreamcast owners becuse of the homebrewing scene. Shame that console did die too early commercially. :/ Though the homebrew scene is alive and kicking.

Meh, I don't know why it's called mod chips. Honestly, isn't it more of a hack than a "mod"? Most time I hear people mentioning mods, it's about the looks and not about hacking the hardware.

Yes, FlashMe is a firmware hack. Technically it's modifying the system, but when people say 'mod' I tend to think hardware hacking... all you do with FlashMe is stick something in a hole and run a program.

Actually, I have painted an SNES before. It was just little art paints though... I don't know what happened to that SNES.

NSNick: Au contraire! I saw the coolest mod at the crazy gamer store in the mall downtown. A GameCube taken apart and put inside of an AT-ST. It was fuckin' bad ass.

I don't even like Star Wars, and that gets my geek-juices flowing.

Hyper LOL: I FlashMe'd my DS, but softmods don't really count IMO.

FlashMe is the one where you have to re-write the firmware of the DS and short the S1 thing, right? That's quite a significant mod, if you ask me.

Plus Sign Abomination: I modded my friends X-Box with him. He works in Blockbuster, so what he does is brings his X-Box to work and rips the games to it. The boss is cool with it, too.

If you don't blackmail them (the manager could get fired, and your friend could get worse), you will lose any and all respect that Black Mage might have had for you, if he were a real person, and had respect for you in the first place. ... Just do it.

I haven't modded anything, no. I've... Never really had a reason to, y'know?

I may in the future, but eh.

Well, by "modded" I basically meant "playing copies" but yeah. That definitely would work.

I know you can theoretically mod the Gamecube but it's not cheap/easy. You need to run through a lot of hoops.

I FlashMe'd my DS, but softmods don't really count IMO.

I did, however, take apart my PSX and:
  • Add a switch to the lid sensor, to make the swap trick easier (since I had no way to get a mod chip)
  • Add LEDs to the disc drive control lines, so they blink when the motor is speeding up, slowing down, seeking etc; it looks cool, and you can tell what it's doing by which LEDs come on.
  • Add an LED to the lid that comes on when it's open (and the power LED goes off, because I suck the power from it); good for use with the switch, since you can tell what position it's in. (Originally I used a finicky button that tended not to stay pressed, so I needed a way to tell. I replaced it with a switch later.)
  • Cut (well, burn ) a hole in the lid, and glue a chunk of plastic (a mutilated CD case) in it, to make a cool viewing window. (I'd have put an LED in there too, but I fear it'd interfere with the laser.)

And yes, I burned/melted all the holes with the soldering iron. Done right it can look pretty neat, makes a mess of the iron though. I figure I might get another one sometime, and do the same but make the lid switch open/close/auto (keeping the original sensor). Or try to hook it up to a CD-ROM drive, and if successful, casemod it.

Other mods I've done include:
  • Installing a light switch for the big blue lights on my PC case (a big red button pokes through one of the drive bay covers)
  • Installing a cool LED controller (actually hooked up to a pair of illuminated fans) in said PC, also poking it through a drive bay. It has on, off, flash and sound-control settings (they come on when you make noise). I had to hack the cable, because it used some proprietary plug.
  • Sticking a thermometer in the same PC. Simple mod, just poke the sensor through a hole and into the CPU heatsink. Planning to remove it though, it's not very accurate,
  • Getting an NES to run on batteries... then breaking it.
  • Almost getting a Gamecube to run on batteries; it refused to start up. (Still works with AC power though.)
  • Changed the LEDs in my keyboard.

Also, there are GCN mod chips of sorts. And the region select hack is ridiculously easy.
