Boo, hoo, you use a different operating system. Had "Fu" and Lunar Magic never existed, you'd be in the same boat, maybe worse (After all, you wouldn't have anyone else's hacks to play). If you want an editor that damn bad write one yourself.

If Fu didn't invent Lunar Magic, the only good I can see coming out of that is that there would be a lot less noobish SMW mods floating around. Other than that, I can't see any positives. I use LM myself and it sure makes my life a lot easier. Much less ASM to wade through anyway.

Your logic is flawed in a number of ways:
-If Fu hadn't made LM, someone would see that there was no SMW editor and decide to make one in Java? There are a lot of people who see that X game has no editor and decide to write one. How many of them use Java? Very few.
-An editor written in Java would be better? Unlike every Java program ever, LM uses very little memory and CPU power and doesn't have a lot of weird quirks. ( @ Tile Molestor's menus.) Really, an open-source editor, or at least LM ports on Linux and Mac, would be best.
-Because LM exists, nobody can make another SMW editor? How many different SMB3 editors are there? In fact, there is another SMW editor, it just isn't nearly as good.

Anyway, to answer the question: There'd be less SMW hacks, that's about it.

...Plus, with LM I got into SMW hacking, and learned everything I know about it because I donated the time to LM that I needed to generate the interest.

Now, I'm working with SNES graphics, and I'm making new ASM and everything for the game, all because of the ease of use LM featured.

Well, I heard someone is working on that Linux/Mac problem. But I still disagree. Lunar Magic made hacking Super Mario World very appealing. A good, user-friendly editor such as it benefits everybody, from the dumbest of n00bs to the smartest of intellectuals. Just think how cumbersome the editor would be if it had a "cycle through the objects with your keyboard" interface that many other [Mario] editors seem to have. For the former, it helps them learn the basics of hacking and introduces them to good level design. For the latter, it allows them to not have to screw around with the slow processes of manual insertation and stuff. Therefore, they can devote more time into ASM hacks and such.

Although I do believe that innovation spawns from necessity, I don't realy see how the editor would have come about in a cross-platform way. And "glorious"? If by, "glorious", you mean, "every other carbon copy piece of shit", then perhaps..

I think you people seem have FuSoYa up on some big pedestal to be worshipped. It's quite frankly disturbing. I'd have disappeared too if I got crazy stalkers like you SMW hacking people.

I don't think you'd have a cross-platform level editing utility for SMW if FuSoYa had never written Lunar Magic anyways. How many cross-platform decent level editing utilities (for any game) exist? I can think of two at the most. So, no I don't agree with you on that point.

Besides, what's stopping anyone right now from creating an alternate SMW editor? Absolutely nothing. Hell, it's actually better to have Lunar Magic around, as it is probably easier to work out what Lunar Magic is actually doing to a ROM, than to work out everything from fresh. I'm really surprised some person hasn't actually sat down with some kind of diff program and worked that out.

I don't think any 1 person contributed enough to the emulation world in a large enough way for their absense to have a significant impact. If there were someone that had that level of influence, it wouldn't be FuSoYa --- it would probably be either system RE gurus or the very earliest of the early emu authors.

But I guess that's not really what you were asking.

Do I think the world would be better without Lunar Magic? No. Do I think it'd be worse? No. I honestly don't think it'd be that much different at all. Then again I'm not big in the SMW hacking world.

you know... I reread your post and thought about it a little more... and yeah, people would be worse off had Lunar Magic never been made.

If nobody's willing to look into SMW and code a Mac-friendly tool now... what makes you think they'd be willing to if LM wasn't around? It's not like LM's existence makes it any harder... or defeats the purpose of making such an editor.

So if LM weren't around -- people still wouldn't be looking into SMW... and there'd be one less hacking tool for people to use.

I think that if FuSoYa wouldn't exist, the world would Partially be a better place. I mean, now that Lunar Magic is the main hacking tool, nobody cares to study SMW anymore.. So Once Fu made the big bang, nobody cared about the reality anymore!
Think about it.. Someone would've just thought that "Hey, Since nobody hasn't made a SMW editor, I'll study SMW's physics and make an editor with Java so anyone can use it!". But no. Fu just made it, published it, and disappeared. So If Fu wouldn't have never made the editor, I think that the Linux/Mac users would make their glorious SMW hacks as You read this post. I hope that someone agrees with me, because I do.
