Not saying they're brilliant musically. I can play basically all of their songs... which isn't saying much for them. But, everyone enjoys a catchy jingle every now and then. And if you don't... you are lying.

Posts: 593/1800		 The current wave of most noise bands coming out. Like deerhoff, wolf eyes and stuff. I just don't care for too much of it. But as I said earlier I've subscribed to the earlier form of noise - noise core. Which is more like grindcore than anything. But that's just my angry opinion.

Melt Banana is indeed awesome. I finally listened to my new Deerhoof album (Green Cosmos), and it is very different than i remember them being.... but in this case different is not a bad thing, i really like it.

Plus Sign - What art-noise are you talking about? I like some noise music but am not sure what you mean.

Snow Tomato - You're right, the music is what's important. I think the corporate side of things missed that message though.

as far as selling out goes, for many people/bands/whatever, the prospect of getting a big paycheck in return for catering to a certain audience is tempting, and it definitely has a tradition of corrupting the music.

promotion and distribution depend a lot on the label wants to do with a band, and that depends on what the band produces for its label, the pushiness of the label, etc, etc. imagine if you were a big record company. you're going to push what you think will sell, and you're going to try to push bands to produce what will sell, and offer them greater promotion to persuade them. it's all kind of complicated.


but anyway, deerhoof totally ruled when they were a art-rock noise band. i saw them the other week and they were kind of a let down. you'd think they'd spaz out on stage, but the closest they came to that was for their 4-foot-tall asian singer to bounce up an down (which was the only time you could even see her).



Yes but that is irrelevant. Seeing as only the music matters to me.. and not if some rich twit is making millions of dollars off of it. Someone made a whole lots of money on Bohemian Rhapsody... and well good for them, big deal.. you made paper. However, the musical aspect of the music industry is far more important to me than the people who make money. I don't equate "selling out" when I check out a band. I listen to the music and either go "Hmm.. this is crap.".. or "Hmm.. this is amazing.".

Point? Don't get turned off to a band because they "sold out". They might still be making amazing music.

There's worlds of difference between Mark Mothersbaugh's soundtrack work (and it's far more widespread than just Rugrats) and whoring out your widely loved bands' catalogues, rewriting the lyrics to remove all subversiveness, and letting a mediocre bunch of kids play them.

I mean it's still not entirely surprising, but the reason it isn't surprising has nothing to do with Mothersbaugh's soundtrack work.

Posts: 479/2713		 I'm going to admit to something a little flaky here -- I get slightly annoyed when a band I am very fond of becomes ridiculously overhyped / popular overnight.

I can't quite pinpoint what it is, but I think part of it is how fandom of that band changes when this happens. It becomes.... diluted.

See, there are more fans (and more critics) but they don't seem to know as much about the artists, have followed things as closely, base things entirely off of TV appearances and high-rotation airplay singles. But once a band becomes very popular, it becomes harder to find another fan who enjoys that artists' music in-depth, who has bothered to go beyond the singles and who finds that that music really actually means something to them. Who gets the bands in-jokes, etc.

So when you say you like a certain band, you either get criticism that they're "crap" out of hand (based on one or two songs) or you get fans who have only heard one or two songs and don't really care about the music the same way you do, and only like it on a moderately superficial basis.

It's petty and it's stupid, but it does kinda dilute that sense of being in a community of fans.

Oh and on Green Day -- I just don't like American Idiot. I guess I just don't think it's their best album / it doesn't appeal to me. But then, it does seem to be written more to appeal to younger people and I doubt I am in Green Day's target audience right now.

However, art noise pisses me off. I just find it a debasing to the entire arm of the genre (the modern version of noise anyway) that crawled out of the ass of punk and metal. Perhaps it's just the fact that I'm in a noise-core band that uses theatrics and gets peeved off when people try to analyze our "music". I have no clue.

Australia's music scene is a bit of a mystery, there are several bands down there i really like, but i know little about it outside of those. New Zealand on the other hand....

I still have'nt had a chance to listen to my new Deerhoof album, i got real busy all of a sudden, but it will happen soon! Have they become more like Melt-banana? The Deerhoof 7" I used to have was kinda odd, but not spastic. Melt-Banana is spastic personified. I saw them live in 99, and they were just like that live to.

Posts: 104/631		 A good example of sellouts would be Devo. Google search for Dev2.0 sometime. It's a disney-owned band of kids playing neutered Devo songs.

On Talking Heads: They never "sold out" because they never claimed not to be "sellouts" and becuase they maintained a great deal of credibility. They made arty pop music and they did it well. They did, however go through at least 3 fairly distinct periods... generally the third isn't considered quite up to the standard (but given the brilliance of their initial run of albums that's gotta be expected). I highly recommend Little Creatures if you haven't heard it.

Plus David Byrne is something of a hero of mine, and he still rocks, which is rare for an aging rock legend.

Also done on naming some good Aussie bands instead of the usual suspects. I don't generally have a high opinion of the Australian music scene, but we do have a few good bands.
