This is about when I usually suggest that the intro be a separate ROM entirely, included with the unmodified game. 31337 |)UMP3R D00DZ get to show off their fancy graphics and "look what I can do" effects without ruining anything. It's win-win.
Speaking of which, a message to those of you who dump ROMs: It is not 1985. .nfo is a reserved file extension; plain text should be stored in .txt files. Also, nobody uses the Terminal font anymore. |

Well, it really depends on the system. For instance, intros on Genesis ROMs can easily be removed with no ill effect, since they're usually tacked onto the end of the existing ROM, and the start vector in the first 256 bytes is modified to point to the intro, with the intro jumping back to the original start vector at the end. GBA intros may be a bit more invasive.
My problem with people who remove intros is in the situations where they trash the original intro'd ROM. Like them or not, they're part of the videogame culture, and so should be preserved alongside the clean ROMs. For example, the 16-bit console scene had loads of ROMs with intros, but they're almost extinct nowadays, because people simply didn't care to preserve that part of the scene. So, now, there are very few intros publically widespread as a result of this shortsightedness. Intros can also be a useful tool for learning the system, as you can step through the intro's code and learn how it does what it does - moreso since the intro was not programmed by an official developer, so you have a unique coding style to study. |

Not surprising. If they don't mind pissing everyone else off with their intros, of course they won't mind taking credit for everyone else's work.
The least they could do is use some unused bit at the end of SRAM/EEPROM/whatever to store some bit so as to only show it the first time you play. |

Well the "intro" screens are just plain annoying. The modern scene doesn't want to waste 10 minutes just because the dumper thought he'd look 1337 by adding a stupid effect to the beginning. |

Yeah, that was me. I was mainly talking about my Sonic 3 EPROM when I wrote that, but as I dumped it as found it was 100% identical to a retail US Sonic 3, then it's sort of moot.
I still don't understand why there's such a difference between the classic C64 scene and the console scenes, both classic and modern. For example, many SNES and Genesis ROMs that had intros, had the intros hacked off before inclusion in something like Good* - but the ROM with intro wasn't included as well. But if someone did that in the C64 scene, they'd be considered "lame" for hacking someone else's release. |

Someone once said that he would add intros to all of the games he dumped -- and provide specific instructions on removing them with each distrobution, mostly to seperate it between loolololol I have 8519825 romz!1gew" and those of us who actually want to utilize the ROM dumps.
As long as I can edit it out in under five minutes, I don't give a shitl. |

I once replaced the intro movie in Pokémon Ruby with a simple splash screen. It worked on the hardware, didn't change shit and basically made the game start faster because it was shorter than the movie.
This was done in place of the movie's actual code. Not at all like dumpgroup intros. |

All I know is that GBA intros are annoying as can be, take forever to play, mess with SRAM, and make it difficult to play on real hardware or with a BIOS. |
