Hell in my school its the teachers that do the swearing not the pupils (though we swear as well). I guess that swear words don't mean as much as they used to. |

A summons is a fine. Like, you can be fined for parking illegally.. and junk like that. You have to pay the state off for your misdemeaner. |

But everytime I´ve heard them speak, it´s "God bless this" and "God bless that".
Not that I have anything against it but sometimes it seems like they´re using it for their own good. |

Words are words. I don't know why the FCC gets all uptight over words. Aren't we garunteed freedom of speech or something like that? It's just silly.
You can be given a summons if you curse too loudly in my neighborhood. It rarely ever gets done... but my friend was being really really loud one night and talking about, god know what.. and he got a summons for it. It wasn't even for disturbing the peace, it was for cursing. That is the height of silly. I generally abstain from cursing unless something completely awesomely amazing happens.. or something completely unawesomely unamazing happens. |

Originally posted by richyawyingtmv I remember that we talked some about this before. I think that someone from this board got suspended for several days for saying "shit" or something along those lines. What´s up with that? I wanna see how such sensitive americans reacts when they come to sweden or England. I swear a lot myself and people don´t care at all. Except for my parents. "The only reason I brought up religion is the whole "god bless America" bs and the fact that most religions are control freaks which matches some stuff happening in the US." Well, Jilkon has a good point. A lot of the goverment people are religious. |

I don't get profanity. For every obscenity there's another word that means exactly the same thing, but its perfectly ok to say that word. What's the difference if they mean the same thing? Is it just because at one time it was decided that one word is ok and the other isn't. It's so abitrary.
It goes both ways, though. A joke isn't any funnier just because it contains obscenities. I think alot of people got so excited when they were finally allowed to use "bad words" that they began using them just because they're considered obscene. And they never really got over the novelty, so now they cram as many as they can in to every sentence whether its approriate for what they're trying to say or not. |

Swear words carry little shock value for me anymore. I've heard them so many times, they've lost most of their meaning (though I still don't ever use them, not even online). I still get a little uneasy around people that sprinkle them liberally throughout their sentences, though. |

Heh. It's automatically about the religion, huh? I don't know you, nor do I even.... know you. (I'm kinda a softy on debates like this. ^^;; But the censorship of the U.S. Films have greatly stopped being so strict on words. On brodcast television, for example, things like sex, penises, and abilities in bed are discussed in a show that is on during the regular course of the day.
And.... religion? I see more diverse religions here than ever. THAN EVER. There's probably 40 different religions in a chunk of the U.S. alone. I agree that some cartoons and anime were dubbed or is void of all cursing, but those are the kinds of cartoon making companies that are gradually giving up on their business. (Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, don't ASK me what's up with 4kids. ) And about the GTA thing... Blame Jack Thompson for that. The same person who said Bomberman inspired someone to hang theirself. So in short, it's not about religion. It is not about religion. By any means. Silly goose. |

That's why you have to hear Newfie/Canada-hick swears.
It is a lovely cross between working class English and American. |
