Heh..might as well post my 2 cents as well.
So what is this forum called? Game Creation. Making games. What is a game? A game can mean lots of different things to people. But the bottom line is, games are entertainment. Fun happy good times. They don't have to have humor or be wildly creative, they just have to entertain.

A game DOES NOT have to be super-ambitious to be good. The simplest of games can have as much success as any of the more involved ones, which are very few and far between...and not very good either. A very simple "Hero vanquishes evil Lord to save World" plot may SOUND very bad and unacceptable, but a game's simplistic plot does not hurt itself if the game's mechanics are solid, intuitive, bug-free and accessible. This can be done with a minimal amount of headaches if you just don't get overly-ambitious.

We live in an amazing time. Game creation is o so accessible to anyone now..ANYONE..even non gamers can whip up a damn good game. With Zero knowledge of programming or even a rudimentary know how of "Game Buzzwords." One just has to remember that what your making is supposed to entertain.

Like Squash Monster posted before, Finish your game, play thru it, if you don't have as much fun as you would want, polish it up. If things ever get even the slightest bit confusing to you, then you can bet your ass, other gamers will be scratching their heads while playing your game. Simplify. After you have the basics done, (Ideally, you would know this after your first game is released and well received) then you can ask people for suggestions on how to improve upon this solid foundation and get more complex..which when handled correctly does add to the play experience.

I believe you've confused 'game' with the word 'plot'.

If you do the following "rules" in order, your game will rock.

My idea of quality in game crafting is extraordinarilly demanding though, so if you're going to cop out, do the ones in bold, at least.

For the sake of the children.

Rule 1: Finish your game.

Rule 2: After you're done, pack up the file, back it up in a dozen places, and don't touch it for a week.

Rule 3: After you've neglected your finished game for a week, bother to play your own game

Rule 4: If you get bored partway through the game, fix it. If anything else is wrong, fix it. If you can think of anything that'd improve the game that you haven't done yet, that's a problem -- fix it.

Rule 5: Repeat steps 2 through 4 until you don't find anything to fix.

Rule 6: You're wrong. Repeat steps 2 through 4 one more time.

Rule 7: Give your game to one completely normal gamer, one Metroid sequence-breaker or similar game-breaking bastard, and, if you can find one, someone who has easy to read emotional responses to just about everything*. Have the first two take notes. Hang out with the last one while the game's being played and take notes yourself.

Rule 8: Change everything you see fit to change.

Rule 9: Repeat steps 2 through 4 again.

Rule 10: Don't release your game until it's polished!

Hmm...this could help some people. I wonder if my plot is right. Mine is about a bunch of the other acmlm members being attacked by Acmlm's army. Acmlm is the main villian. You got to deafeat him and free the rest of the acmlm boards.

Here are Just a few Tips to Keep in mind when thinking up your next Epic Journey, Or Maybe Lame Attempt at a game....

-You don't have to be wildly original. Most RPG's follow a tried, tested and true formula. For example, Final Fantasy games have always gone by the "small group against a great big empire" formula. You could do this. Hell, you could probably build a great game off that formula if you give it your own unique twist!

-Write something, anything! Take a pen and paper, and just write anything that comes into your head. You may surprise yourself. (Or in the case of Game making, Try Just Programming and see where it goes, or perhaps you want to write your plot before hand)

-Read some folklore from all around the world, from Japanese ghost stories, to the werewolf legends of Germany. After you decide to travel the world hunting demons for a living, you may come up with some spiffy ideas. It doesn't hurt to skim over a fantasy paperback or two either. Of course, the very best thing to do when brainstorming is to play other RPG's

-Get your ideas together with a like-minded buddy and talk 'em over. Don't flat out refuse anything he has to offer your RPG, instead, say something like "that's cool and. . . " Who knows, with the right encouragement, you might come up with a real gem between the two of you. Of course, you'll have to put him in the credits.
